Astra militarium is an official name for the imperial guard like the adeptus astartes . But normally imperial guard sounds better . What do you think ?

I've been playing Guard since 3rd, and I don't really mind Astra Militarum. I use them interchangeably and kinda like having both names.

Imperial Guard. I have played for far too long and I am too old to adopt the new name. Stubbornness comes with age.

Astra Militarum is an awful faux-latin name conjured up for legal reasons.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

This is enough reason to resist the change for me. They weren't renamed to improve the game, they were renamed for the lawyers. It's also one of the worst sounding faux-latin names.

Screw your rules, man! They are the astra guard! Or imperial militarum, yeah!

Jokes aside, I don't mind either, although imperial guard is what I'm used to.

I would have preferred a better Latin name, but I can see why they went with it - Imperial Guard sounds very fancy for what they are.

And while the comparison is to SM, I'm of the opinion that 'Adeptus Astartes' always sounds better then 'Space Marine'

I really prefer IG. So far the only time I've referred to them as AM was when giving a new player tips about army choice, and that was just to avoid confusing them if they hadn't yet figured out that it has two names.

Even more than the name, I dislike the abbreviation, because AM should be reserved for the Adeptus Mechanicus.

guard sounds way better. and people have a tendency to say militarium instead of militarum which makes it worse, makes me think of some army aquarium. like with aquaman instead of marbo.

I find it interesting. Going through my blog traffic almost all the searches are Astra Militarum now.

I did a test where I did posts with no Astra Militarum in it, and some with Astra Militarum in it. The ones with AM in it got heaps of search related views and the ones without got few and majority of views where referred sources.

I for one refuse to use the stoopid new name, nothing wrong with Guard as thats what we do, we guard...that and die

Anyways, I agree with the general consensus. I think my biggest problem, oddly enough, is that you create an obnoxious reduplication with the new name if you add the word "army" after it. "Guard army" sounds just fine, but "militarum army" has an "arm" reduplication that's kind of annoying. It sounds like you're studdering. I mean, seriously, say "militarum army" ten times fast. You pretty quickly get "mili-tarumarum" to "mili-tarmarmarm".

I play guard, not armarmarmarmarm.

Imperial Guard.

Also can we just call them storm troopers again? Do they have to be Tempestus Scions.

A certain amount of Latin sounds good in 40k but Astra Militarum is excessive.

Astra Militarum is a great name. Don't expect players to use it. They're the Guard and guardsmen and the whole point of them is that they aren't fancy-schmancy and High Gothic isn't something the typical guardsman does. So welcome to the Imperial Guard, scalp.

The Chapter House case was partly about the trademarks on GW products, and their significant losses in that case have awoken them to the legal realities of the situation.

"Imperial Guard" is not valid as a trademark in the field of tabletop wargames as there are so many existing Imperial Guard units and figures already. The most obvious example is Napoleon's Imperial Guard.

Thus the name of Imperial Guard has been changed to a made-up Latin style which is unique. This allows GW to create a valid trademark of it.

This will prevent other companies from selling Astr Militra figures.
