Not really. The 'nids tend to avoid Tomb Worlds on principle.

Nids eat living matter and Necrons have none. A Tyranid couldn't care less about the worlds the Necrons have taken over so your best bet is a world inhabited by another race fighting Tyranids and the fighting awakens a dormant and hidden bit of Necrons but I'm not sure a book has been written for that.

It was an old joke in 3rd edition that the 40k universe would end with the Necrons winning only because the Tyranids would have eaten everything else and left the corpse of the galaxy to the robot skeletons.

That's not true, Behemoth destroyed several Tomb Worlds.

Actually, yes.

There's a nice article about that in the Blood Angels codex, if I recall <3

Tyranids don't only eat living matter, they eat anything that can be converted to living matter. They eat the nutrients of the soil, they drank all the water and the atmosphere. They also complement their diet with metals.

"In 744.M41, the Silent King ended his self-imposed exile and returned to the galaxy after encountering the Tyranids within the intergalactic void and realising the threat they pose. He has begun a journey across the galaxy with a band of his loyal Triarch Praetorians to reawaken Tomb Worlds that still slumber so they may unite against the Tyranids."

First contact with the Necrons occured after this.

I'm not sure they are the only reason, but they are probably the only existential threat to the Necrons.

They are pretty much co-existing, actually, the Tyranids are doing the Necrons a favor. The Tyranids cannot consume Necrons, so they don't profit from fighting them anyway, and they cannot destroy them either (as they teleport away). And a full Tomb World is already devoid from any life, so why bother? On top of that, once the Tyranids rob a world of all life, Necrons wouldn't care either as they don't need an atmosphere or anything else to go on.

And to round it off, the Tyranids ultimatively help the Necrons achieve their (or rather their master's, the C'Tan) main goal, to eradicate all life in the universe.

Isn't the Necron goal to remake their empire and have biological forms now? Something boring like that anyway.

Ah, no.

The Necron goal is to rebuild their empire. Its only really the Maynarkh and other Flayers who want to get back in the flesh.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I mean, yes, you can literally conjugate it, but because of Existentialism, the more correct word would be "Extant" (or maybe "Existent").

Flayed Ones are probably too insane for such thoughts. The Silent King, and many other Necrons, wish for a return to flesh - especially since the thought of apothesis into living being weighed so heavily on the Silent King's mind as he gave his last command before breaking the Command Protocols.

Given all of the "really a good guy once you get to know him" fluff about the necron leadership now, I feel like the whole "scour worlds of all life" doesn't sound quite right anymore. Don't get me wrong, they're still an evil empire, but they're not "ancient evil awakening" anymore as much as a practical fusion between every other xenos threat in 40k. They're more powerful than tyranids, more ancient than Eldar, more industrious and imperial than Tau, and more bizarre than orks.

But yeah. Building an Empire and exterminating all life don't really jive that well. Has there been anything saying that they bring death to all life in their new codex?

Each Dynasty has it's own goals and Ambitions.

The Sautekh Dynstaty has been on a conquering spree.

The Maynarkh Dynasty wiped out an entire sector, just because.

The Necron Empire was a lot less evil than the Imperium... even their slave caste got ascended to the metal, after all. You can bet that after the Emperor passes on and the AdMech take over the Imperium, your average hive ganger isn't going to be given the chance to undergo the new biotransferance.

Existential threat is correct term to define something that threatens the continued existence of something.

The Necrons slept for millions of years just to come back and destroy the universe - what are mere 3 years then?

The necron can and would put a beating down on the tyranid. No concern over the shadow of the warp, no ability to give biomass to recoup and regrow tyranids, ability to repair and return lost warriors to action.

The fact that you aren't actually a Necron.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

True believers? The Necron fluff was almost completely unknown while a WD book. It then had the CTan added in 3rd in a small, thin book. After that, it had almost nothing added for another 10 years.

People can't honestly be that upset that they doubled or tripled the available fluff and opportunity in the 5th edition book over the threadbare but interesting framework in 3rd.
