What if?
If you think about it, there are a large amount of competitive builds out their that we see on a day to day basis that rely on one or two particular characters cheese to pull off the most horrific lists conceivable.
How would you feel about playing in a tournament which restricted you from taking the likes of :
Coteaz
Sevren Loth
Tigirius
Fateweaver
Baron
Eldrad
Belial
Belakor
Farsight
Draigo
Imotekh
.. The list would go on!
Ofcourse I am not a TO, but after discussing with my local GC I wondered what the world might think of this instead.
Please note this is not to discuss other rulings of a Tournament, only the one restriction I have mentioned!
Merci!

No Celestine? No Jakobus? No Coteaz? I currently literally need those to get to enough points. Even then, you can have powerful units in HS, FA and Elite slots, but when models in the HQ slots become powerful it's wrong? I always see special characters as just more expensive and powerful IC's.

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)
One orc team (Blood Bowl) |

In my experience, special characters don't contribute to the fun or strategy of the game, they just help proliferate the dependence on Death Stars and force every army into the same boring type.

Eveyone builds an army differently and it seems that you have built yours around special characters which is your choice. However unique characters in the grand scheme of things ( in our local META) tend to be one of the primal cause of death stars/ un-killable units and I'm pretty sure this isn't just us that are doing it!

Too limiting, IMO. SCs aren't like the ones in Fantasy, as they don't completely change the course of the game. What if someone wants a fluff army? Use Captain Steve instead of Belial so I can't play Deathwing anymore? What good does that do.

If SC's aren't allowed then you're stopping anyone from bringing Deathwing, Ravenwing and Wolfguard armies (just to mention a few off the top of my head)
There is a guy that brings Eldrad to our local gaming circle every week, yeah he's annoying and controls the psychic phase but the damage he does is usually minimal.
What's the problem with Farsight, I've not heard anyone moan about him?

Seriously? I played a campaign 2v2 (750 points per player), one Tau brought Farsight and his partner brought Shadowsun. Crisis suit death stars in 750 point battles...it was awful.

That's not the problem with Farsight though, it's a problem with the units he can be attached too and how effective they are. I personally wouldn't have let people take Farsight and Shadowsun if they were in the same army composition. but meh that's me

Special characters are some of the most entertaining units to play with. My answer is no.

but this isn't for general, mess around games. This is for competitive, show your worth play in tournaments.

And how do special characters 'not count' towards those?

Never a fan of special characters and would be happy if they were all removed fro the game.
So, yeah, I'd hop onto a tourney that didn't allow them in a heartbeat.

By saying that no special characters is for " competitive, show your worth play", you mean that special characters are somehow not able to do this. I'd like an explanation as to the difference between a cheese list with and without special characters.

If you go to a competition, you are expected to have enough of an army to handle a deathstar. Plan around them, do your research on the possible ones in 40k and figure out ways to deal with them or hope someone else has ways to deal with them before they get to you. But limiting unit choice in a setting where the goal is to win by any means, that's silly.

Yea. I have a bunch of the special character models, because they're cool and unique. But I can count on one hand the amount of games where I've used their special character rules (and I've been playing since 3rd edition).

I don't feel like I need to explain the difference between an all rounder and a deathstar list, do I ?
Besides that I think it would be very interesting to see how all armies do when special characters get taken away from the game. Armies might come out on top exactly as they would with SC's but if you don't try it on a grand scale, you'll never know for certain!
Taking away 1 or 2 single characters from an entire codex is hardly limiting, it just forces people to be more creative.

Because broken lists exist without SCs. You keep changing the things you are comparing now.
Demon factories are just as abusable. The most powerful Space Marine and Eldar characters are still there. Your solution is banning all SCs for the broken few, and reducing the results for everyone else.

Have you read the Adepta Sororitas Codex and considered the impact on them of removing such a huge proportion of their HQ units?
There are worse things than SCs in the codexes............

special characters are no longer special when you expect y character every time you play x race.
not terribly long ago you couldn't use special characters without permission from your opponent...
