anyone ever feel like this? like they have to many hobbies and they are getting overwhelmed with it? It may be me with being a poor college student but Im curious
My hobbies are
Video Games(Expensive I recently set my sights on a PS4) with games going to 60$ or more
40k with 2 armies and starting a third
Warmachine with Khador

And im looking at other hobbies aswell. But I always feel overwhelmed and poor looking at what I want. Maybe because its my small amount(I only make like 350$ every two weeks)

I'm am blessed that money isn't an issue for my family and I, but time and space are.

I have way too much gaming stuff I'll never get around to using, and we are getting ready to sell our house and move to a smaller place so I am desperately trying to cull it down to a manageable amount.

I also enjoy shooting, yet it seems even though I can fire weapons on my property, finding the time to do so is rare lately.

We also have horses, but due to an injury my wife had, and the fact she (due to military assignment) is not living with the daughter and me, the horses are not being ridden or enjoyed enough.

So, I kind of get your issue. For me it is too much 'stuff' and not enough time to enjoy it. I think part of the 'too much stuff' resulted from lack of time and trying to fill that lack by buying cool things instead of focusing on enjoying what I have. I am making a very honest effort to overcome that though.

Hopefully this doesn't come off as condescending (because that isn't my intention) but it sounds like you need to draft up a basic budget for your hobby spending.

Keep track of how much you bring in, deduct your expenses, and then further divide the remainder among your hobbies/savings. It takes discipline, and it may mean missing out on some impulse purchases, but if you can stick to your budget you should be able to more easily direct your money so that you can maximize your hobbies. That includes adding new hobbies or at least trying new things.

The benefit of the budget is so you can see where your money is going and then make the tough decisions regarding which purchases you need to cut, or at least scale back, so you can better afford the other hobbies and activities you want to pursue.

Another thing to consider is that Interests ebb and flow, and you might be spending on hobbies out of habit rather than out of passion. I was obsessed with collecting vintage 80's GI JOEs up until about two years ago when my circumstances changed and I no longer had the money to continue with the collection. I was also reaching a point with my JOE collection where I was buying just to buy and not really acquiring figures that were of interest to me. It was hard to walk away from that hobby initially, but it was necessary, especially given my higher interest in wargaming, and since I couldn't afford both hobbies I cut the one that brought me less satisfaction. It wasn't until a few months after I stopped collecting all together and began purging the excess parts of my GI JOE collection that I realized how many figures I had bought that I didn't give a damn about. I was buying on auto pilot and wasting money.

Someone needs to make a GI Joe wargame where we can use all those action figures!

Of course, then I would have to take them out of the packaging, and that will never happen!

My hobbies? A handful, but definitely not overwhelming. I do try not to get into too many though (except women, many is good) I love my hobbies:

Women.
Liquor.
Guns.
Training.
Traveling.
Feeding.
40k.
Infinity.

Yes, I have this feeling pretty often. Mine include
- video games
- gaming (D&D and 40k, trying to start Malifaux, board games)
- airsoft
- target and trap shooting (real steel, not airsoft)
- working on cars...but I haven't had a real project car in ages
- going to concerts
- playing oodles bass guitar

Since I just closed on a house last month, I now have even less time for hobbies due to updates, and house maintenance.

Yay adult life!

Oh I agree! On both counts, actually. My AFA graded Joe's aren't leaving their protective cases on my watch!

This was me for awhile (now I have to actually work hard to earn my money, lol), having too many hobbies and not enough time to enjoy them:

For me it was:

Wargames/Mini and model painting
Video games
collecting/drinking single malt scotch
collecting/smoking cigars
comic books (this was my most manageable one due to I don't buy the individual issues, I wait for the larger combined issues so I get the whole story in one volume)
playing/watching rugby
shooting pool

Some things have become too expensive, and somethings I've adapted or made them more manageable (for instance, my wife let me get a pool table for the house, so now I don't spend a bunch of money at local bars trying to shoot pool)

I used too doodle a lot but over the years yeah I just don't have the time anymore (I wasn't much good anyway ). War gaming is really the hobby that's kind of suffered. I don't have the time to make trips to play, and with all my other hobbies I have a horde of unopened boxes laying around. I used to be way into paintball too, but there was nowhere and no one to really do that with in college for me, so I ended up completely falling out of it.

Silly question but if you think about it you see where I'm at with it. You by chance viewing the "hobby" as work? I use to do paintball myself but I was lucky being I was at and around military bases for a good pool of players. Paintball no longer thrills me after my first deployment.

Lots of paintball around Bragg

And yeah I do know what you mean. My dad tried it once and he said that being shot at isn't much fun after you've been deployed even if the bullets are technicolor

Its great fun, buts its also messy fun. Cleaning the guns, the clothes, it takes awhile. Airsoft is so much cleaner but I've never gotten into it.

Not anymore. I played Paint Ball when I did live there, but my first college wasn't near any paint ball places and I didn't know anyone who played it, plus it was a Baptist school and they had a super strict no guns, no alcohol, no sex policy so I couldn't bring my stuff with me when my dad was sent to the War College. My second school didn't have paint ball either, but it did have airsoft. I just never got into it.

My problem isn't too many hobbies, it is too many expensive hobbies.

Gaming (tabletop, rpg, and video)
Firearms
Computers
Cigars (although not too bad)

That is what I have limited myself to, otherwise the list would also include cars.

Oh and speaking of expensive hobbies... my girlfriend has 2 horses back home, and is leasing one here.... want to talk about expensive... that is a few hundred a month.

For all the money I spent on 40k, I could have bought a handgun or rifle and taken up shooting with a bucket of money leftover for bullets. Shame too, cause there's a range not that far from me now. Only takes about fifteen minutes in medium traffic. Missed opportunities XD

Whattheheck? $350 every two weeks?

I'm really starting to get the impression that people here on Dakka don't really know what it's like to be poor, especially college-poor. I guess a web forum like this is just a haven of the upper-middle class. I had some college buddies who would kill to make that amount while they were in school.

Anyway, just find one or two hobbies and stick to them, and make sure you prioritize life duties above your hobbies.

Not really. It gives you time to look into and research what fire arms that would fit your style, play, and satisfaction.

M1 Garand is fun. I like my M1 Carbine over my civilian version of a M4. Its a snug weapon

It gets far worse, give a warm greeting to Clover

I mean sure its not all knives and eeriness, I do forge a great narrative with them, and my friends and I gather at places to take pictures of them and talk.
They're called doll meets. I do wonder when I started warhammer that I'd have been surprised it would take a back seat to me making tiny dresses. I guess we'll never know.
