Regarding the discontinuation of LotR, wasn't there that bit in Kirby's financial report, about a millstone round their neck not being around for much longer?
I ignored the line for ages because I couldn't stand what Jackson did to the story, and ignored it again after the prices leapt up. Now, if I can snap up a decent amount of dwarves-with-legs and 'sensible' orcs before they disappear, I'll be happy enough. Most of the rest I can convert from historicals, proxy, or safely ignore. (Much more interested in playing 'book' LotR than 'movie' LotR, with a dark-age flavour, without all the extraneous garbage GW tacked on and special-characters-with-special-rules warhammerification of WotR.)

I love the look of the LOTR models, but at the moment the prices aren't worth it. I have a large force of Evil minis from back when the prices weren't insane, and I even splashed out on some Hobbit plastics. But Red Box Games has moved into that niche for me now, with much nicer models and reasonable prices.

I thought that had to do with Kirby stepping down

Jings. If RBG is the cheaper one, things are definitely going wrong.

Took me a second to get that.

It does vary a bit by miniature, but RBG on Kickstarter is generally going to be cheaper than similar forces from GW, and in some cases even bought from the store will compete favorably with GW's stuff.
Which considering the difference in materials and technical skill, is staggering.

Many of the models released for War of the Ring are now gone, as well.
Even some Finecast models have been discontinued.
Off the top of my head;
Lurtz with Bow
Feral Uruk Hai
Foot knights of Dol Amroth (these were made into Finecast and now even the Finecast set is discontinued)
Harad Serpent Riders
Harad Serpent Guard
Mahud Warriors w/ blowpipes
Mahud King
Khandish King
Khandish cavalry
corsair Bosun
Corsair Fleetmaster
all Dunlending warriors
Mauhur's Marauders command
everything for Arnor except spearmen
and tons more, just tons. Many of the above packs are going for over $100 on ebay.
It's basically impossible to play Arnor or the Fiefdoms.

Here's a master list of everything that has been discontinued so far (more things are discontinued every week, I just missed getting the Hasharin resculpt for my Harad army) - http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26609
Tl;dr. You can still do Arnor if you're willing to convert.
I converted 24 warriors of Arnor out of plastic warriors of Minas Tirith. Other than it being my first major project in greenstuff sculpting and conversions, I think they look pretty good. I might revisit them in future and replace them with better conversions when my greenstuff skills have improved enough.
All,of the warriors were.bought dirt cheap off eBay too. LOTS of Minas Tirith models floating around. Also got plastic rangers and metal dunedain cheap.
And Aragorn, which I hired a commission sculptor to convert into "Aranarth", the son of King Arvedui and the first Chieftain of the dunedain after the fall,of Arnor. In,game I run him as Halbarad with Arwens Banner or a spear (arms are magnetized). Got this model via a trade on one ring.
The only purchases I made direct with GW were arvedei and malbeth, captain and banner, Cirion (converted into Arnor Captain by giving him a fur cloak).
