With some talk thrown around here and there about Destroyer viability I thought I would break out a list I ran a lot early in 6th, with some tweaks for 7th:
HQ :: 360
180 CCB Olord WS
180 CCB Olord WS
RC 370
2 Stormteks
6 Lanceteks
2 Pulseteks
Troops :: 425
5 x Gauss Immortals
(Stormtek/Pusletek)
5 x Gauss Immortals
(Stormtek/Pusletek)
5x Tesla Immortals
(Lancetek/Lancetek)
5x Tesla Immortals
(Lancetek/Lancetek)
5x Tesla Immortals
(Lancetek/Lancetek)
FA :: 780
3 x Heavy 2 x Destroyer
3 x Heavy 2 x Destroyer
3 x Heavy 2 x Destroyer
Total 1935
Leaves some room for some extra toys on the CCBs. Probably MSS/SW on each, and then ?? with the other 5 points?
8 S8 AP 2 shots and 9 S9 AP 2 PE shots all at 36" range is pretty nasty. Use the CCBs to keep the enemy at bay, and bomb from range. The Gauss/Haywire/Lance squads can punish any vehicle that sneaks past the CCBs.
You can swap one unit of Destroyers for a Monolith and maybe an extra squad of backup warriors. That will give a nice mobile LOS Wall for the other two groups of Destroyers to peak around, and of course the ability to quickly redeploy some of those foot sloggers.

Interesting list. What are your anti infantry option? How would you handle a horde list like Orks? They can easily go up to 150-200 models.

The troops themselves can handle quite a few basic bodies. Full guns blazing they kill about 20 bases per turn at 24", and you can get another 12 to 13 from the Destroyers. Use the CCBs for clean up and you have some options there.
But, yeah, something that far to that extreme could be tough. As long as they have something along the lines of Vehicles, MCs, Medium to Elite infantry, though, you should be able to inflict some serious pain.

I would like to try it but I'm short by 5 boxes of Destroyers. :p
I've had this thing for particle beamer Tomb Blades so I might modify it a little. And I need 1 box less of Destroyers!
I also feel a little naked without transports but wouldn't mind stepping out of my comfort zone to give it a go.

Yeah, against some of the really common units out there, WKs, Riptides, Wave Serpents, Necron AV13, Centurions, etc it's a pretty fun list as it handles those popular units rather efficiently.
I would definitely recommend tweaking it towards your play style and giving it a go.
You can also drop one unit of Destroyers for the 3xABs most people are comfortable with.

Why the extra normal destroyers? Primarily for ablative wounds? It just seems that they won't get to do much given the range differential.

If you're going to run Heavy Destroyers, then this is how it should be done!! Especially if your meta is filled with MEQ/High T armies. It still has a good handle on the Horde Armies, those Tesla's will do some damage, until they take some hits. The CCB's will bog down/Tarpit/Distract most armies easy enough.
Only thing I'd probably change, is to bulk out the 2 Gauss Squads, since those will most likely be advancing or taking the hits first depending on your opponent, just a preference though.
Great job though.

I find their weapon profile mixes well with what the Heavy D's are shooting at anyway. Gauss for vehicles. AP 3 for MCs and medium infantry. So if they are in range, all the better.
But the other big reason you mention, ablative wounds. I keep one in front to catch the first wound in and I keep another one tucked out of LOS as much as possible. This allows the HDs to rely on their RP a bit more in the event they get wiped.
I find as long as you keep RP part of their resiliency profile, along with range and mobility keeping them as hidden as possible, they tend to be fairly resilient.

So no transports at all?
Not even so much as a Veil-tek?

Heavy Destroyers are a reliable unit. The problem is that you must absolutely max out the squads in order to avoid being insta-gibbed. Especially Plasma is nastry vs. Destroyers. Underrated unit with the problem of being too expensive. Heavy should be a 10 pts upgrade and regular destroyers should be 10 pts cheaper. Destroyers look awesome. Extremely good-looking models. The units of 5 are a problem. They can easily be wiped and can hardly hold objectives. I'd consider making squads of 10 and trying to get 2 NS. I wouldn't squeeze a monolith in. Not because it's not a good unit, but also because it doesn't fit to the list. Other than that, the list can work vs. a lot of opponents.

All good suggestions. I really wanted mostly foot and Immortals for the list, as I think their resiliency profile works well with Destroyers.
5 Man units might seem small, but keep in mind they are really 7 man units, with RP, and their are 5 of them. 35 bodies from the troop slot isn't awful (particularly when they all have RP, and 10 have Everliving).
But yeah, my main focus when building this list was to max out RC and HDs. Still playing around with some tweaks to it though. Automatically Appended Next Post: skoffs wrote:So no transports at all?

Yeah, the Veiltek isn't a bad idea. Like I said above, was trying to avoid having to lean on vehicles for this list, although I could certainly see working in a couple NS.

I would also recommend the NS so you get access to good infantry weapons, something you currently lack a bit.
I would definitely give the Gauss squads a Veiltek each in order to boost their killyness. Enemies are very likely to be aware of their anti-vehicle prowess and such a small squad will be eradicated at ease. By adding a Veiltek, you ensure that you get 1 round of shooting (get them in deepstrike reserves!).
