Spent the last 3 weeks creating an Ork army.
The interesting thing about it: All models designed and printed at home.

Have a nice weekend.

Amazing.

Do you have plans to expand the army? Gunfortresses, Gargants, Supa-Stompas or the like?

You designed them all yourself?

How many hours for the 3d work?

And Siemens Tabletop Club - are you using company printers I have a friend at BAE systems who sadly likes larger scales but gets access to the printers if they aren't tasked to do anything!

edit - I note you bought your own.

I love the terrain you have done, especially the interior of the control tower, truck at the aa site and cargo details.

Interesting choice on the size of your rhino - I would have gone for the old styling but newer size. I have seen a few 3d printed Chaos rhinos and I think they missed a trick by not using the mk1 styling rather than the current GW model.

By far and away though my favourite is the Praetorian Leman Russ. Absolutely fantastic.

A friend did a Preatorian army, using zulu wars British for infantry (heroics and ross I believe) and 'Bulu's'. The old GW plastic beastmen on square bases witht he front 2 having shields painted of course as cow hide!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Yes, I will, but I do need a rest and have to play them for a while first, befor I add other troop types.

Yes I did.
I didn't count the hours. What I can say the time varies widely between models, the clearer the image in mind is of what the model should look like, the faster the model will be done. Reusing components saves a lot of time and gives the army a coherent look.
The Bike was the first model I did and it took close to two days until I was content with the final design. But this includes the time for two Bike variants an the Ork miniature.
The skorcha in contrast took somewhere between 2 and three hours.

I used the Variant for two reasons. First for me there is only one Rhino and that is the old iconic M113 like version. And secondly it should fit my existing army and so it had be of this form and size anyway.

Yes I agree, it's a fantastic model. It's not of my design so. I just converted a Dystopian War French tank by adding Lascanon and Battlecannon.

 Llamahead wrote:

That's a difficult topic.
I do not have the resources to produce the miniatures, the printer is no production tool and I have neither experienece nor interest in mould making.
Shapeways could be an alternative.
Highest quality from Shapeways is quite expensive 5 Stormboyz for just short of 7,50 euro.
In addition there are potential problems regarding IP. Which can be ignored for family and personal friends as long as no money making is involved, but which is an issue when making stuff available to other people, even if no profit is made.
So while I look into it once in a while, I do not really see it coming, as the balance of risk, pain and gain in not favourable.

Difficult to say.
Resin less than 10 Euros.
Materials for cleaning and operation also less than 10Euros.
So that's 20Euros add a 100% margin for things I forgot or judged wrongly, makes less than 40 Euros.

Exluding time, bases and magnets.

For your clear bases how do you make the depressions? I am using drill bits but don't get a flat surface.

And I take it the other Praetorian vehicles are also Dystopian wars conversions?

I use a milling machine.

Mostly they are just pure Dystopian wars, not even conversions.

I use a B9 Creator
http://brumbaer.de/index.php/3d-printing/12-equipment
http://b9creator.com

It uses resin soup instead of plastic sausages. Basically it allows for finer details, but has less build space.

They are just releasing a new version 1.2 with higher resolution.

Duh. I missed the link.

But that's very, very interesting.

That printer is quite inexpensive for this kind of technology. Most printers in the $3000 price range only use FDM, which is imply not good enough for miniatures...

Nothing really new. But for those interested in 3D stuff I added some information and images of the Ork army design to the web site. It's a bit sobering or encouraging, when you see how simple the models are.

I'm intrigued that those tiny gun barrels came out. I had a Form 1 printer, and just received my replacement upgraded Form 1+. I got to see the B9 Creator in action at a Maker Faire last year, and was very impressed. Would love to compare the two more closely at some point.

What type of gun barrels are you talking about ?

On the tank turrets, right in the center back of the pic in the first post. They're even hollow, it seems. Those are printed, not added after the fact, right?

Ok,
The turret is printed as one part including the barrel.
The barrel is only hollow for the first mm the rest is massive.
The wall thickness is .3 mm.

The resolution I use is .05mm in xy and .025mm in z. But you can't print a single pixel and expect it to survive.
I did test prints which printed boxes with a .1mm width and depth and a height of.5 mm, but I wouldn't call that easily reproducible under all circumstances.

I consider .3 mm wall thickness as save for design and robust enough for play especially when in an round shape.
I printed AA guns with barrels of .5mm diameter and they are stable enough for a display model, but I doubt they survive playing.
The cleats of the bikes' tires are .2mm, but basically square not round.
In rare cases I use cylinders with .3mm diameter as supports.
Features down to .2 mm can be seen. The occasional .15 feature comes more out as an hint than an feature, especially after priming.
Obviously cylinders that small can only be of short length or will snap immediately.
As you know a .2mm box has more volume than an .2 cylinder of the same height, so it's often better to make small features "less" round.
Holes are different and will differ more according to the orientation relative to the z axis.
Round holes with .4mm diameter come out very well, as can be seen on the Bikes front guns.
.2mm can often only be seen as indention and might need an reorientation of the model to come out better.
These are save parameters.
By pivoting the model on the build platform and/or changing the exposure parameters, you could optimize the quality, but I'm content with what I get, so I do not invest any time in that.

No, I do not play BFG.
But if I remember correctly there are some "BFG supporters" on shapeways, Armand being one who also shows some of his stuff at taccom.

Hmm, but doesn't Epic also include some BFG stuff (orbital support or something)?

But then again, Armand makes some amazing models!

Yes you have for most armies two BFG options - a cruiser that can pass over the battle turn 1 onwards, or a battleship which can arrive from turn 3 onwards. They don't actually appear on the board but do hit pre-plotted locations, conduct lance strikes on anything big enough to be easily spotted (titans) and drop troops in drop pods and anything capable of making re-entry.

That's roughly the numbers Shapeways give for their Frosted Ultra Detail material...

That's a pretty impressive achievement, given your printer is 10 times less expensive than theirs.

@Litcheur
Is your Form 1+ up and running ?

If you are interested I'd mail you the TwinSoopa arm for the Stompas.

The barrel has the same wall thickness as the Gunwagon barrels.
How the ammunition belt and the holes in the barrel will print on the Form, would also be interesting to see.

Wow, those stormboyz are 3d prints? The arms can be printed like that and not snap off during extraction?

Re Rhino it is a shame the guys that got chaos rhinos cast for their armies all went for the new type not the old type.

Yes the complete vignette is a single 3D print - just one part.

The only endangered pieces are the barrels of the Marines' guns. The diameter is about .5 mm. The removal of supports is no problem, but when handling the miniatures roving fingers may break the barrels. On the vignette they are well protected, but with miniatures on an ordinary playing stand it happens.
The arms are quite robust, haven't broken one accidentally yet.
