Hello Dakka people, Mr. Black here, Lead Developer of Dark Age, and I wanted to have a little chat with you about why you should be playing.

There are lots of games out there right now bidding on your time, that's just the nature of our little community right now- your time is super valuable. Acknowledging that, I'm going to hit on the important parts first:

1. We provide our rules to everyone for free.

-Basically, we don't believe that people should be charged simply for the privilege to play our game. You enjoy our game, you pick up the miniatures, you spread the word, and the community grows, simple as that.
-That being said, our full Rulebook is always available for download:

DARK AGE CORE RULES

-The Stat Cards for all models in our game are likewise provided free. Basically, if it's rules related and needed for play, we don't charge you:

STAT CARDS

2. We give our game, rules and models, yearly evaluations to keep everything balanced.

-Balance is super important in any miniature game, and one broken unit can ruin a whole army. Likewise, it's a sucky feeling whem you find a unit you love... Only to find out they suck... We hate that feeling as well. As such, we've taken the following measures to fix that:

-Our rulebook is updated yearly: Each year we release a new rulebook to fix any issues or grievances. It's important to note with this, however, two factors:

1. The Core Rules are a $20 book.
2. Anytime we release a new Rule Book you can trade in any previous one for a new one.... Free of charge.
3. So yes, once you have a rulebook, you're in for life.

-Each year we review all our models. If one is overpowered, we fix it, if one is underpowered, we fix it. All models should be viable at all times, aka, you should be able to play what you think is cool.

3. Full tournament support

-Our tournament series is the March to Immortality, leading up to the Immortals at GenCon

-Why is this neat? Well first up if you host an MTI tournament at your store and you get at least 24 entries the prize you're fighting for is a Round-Trip Plane Ticket to Gencon. A store can be awarded 1 ticket a month doing so.

-So what do you get for winning the Immortals? Pretty much the best prize in gaming. You'll work with our development staff to make a model based on yourself or a concept to your liking

-Example: 2010's Immortal winner was Marc Berlove. When he won, he decided he wanted to include his eight year old son. As a result, the Bounty Hunter duo Phadras and Maximo were born:

4. Skirmish Game- 5-12 models on average

-This one's pretty self explanatory. Dark Age is a true skirmish game, and even at higher point levels you probably won't break 10-12 models per side (and that's at the highest standard game level, 1000 points)

5. Scenario Based

-Sure, you can kill 'em all. Our game slogan is EVERYTHING DIES, but if you just play like that you'll be missing out on the depth we offer. Dark Age is Scenario based. Currently our Tournament format features six primary scenarios and twelve secondary scenarios. At GenCon. when we update our Tournament Document for the 2015 season, that number will be growing to 8-10 Primary Scenarios and 30 Secondary Scenarios.

6. Eight distinct Factions

-We have something for everyone in the fact we have eight main factions, each composed of a number of Sub-Factions, each with their own playstyle.

-We also strive to avoid "Faction bloat", aka adding stuff to armies just for the sake of adding... Basically, when we view a faction as "done" it's done. We love adding new sub-factions and such, but more models for more models is pointless..

7. Low cost of entry

-Our starters are $50 or less and give you 300 points, which is perfectly fine for playing games. Our tournament level is 500 points, which is 1-2 blisters away.

-Basically, for less than $100 investment you can have a full, tournament viable army.

8. Our models are great, and only getting better.

-We want to have the best models of any game out there. Period.

and we're only getting better:

So then, let me ask you... Why aren't you playing?

I've always been interested in Dark Age. The new models are definely an improvement on a lot of the older sculpts. I'm not a fan of some of the aesthetics, specifically some of the Forsaken, and I suspect the new models may look a bit jarring when standing side by side with the old ones.

It's also sort of hard to find in the UK unless you order from Wayland which I'm not inclined to do, even if they do have a summer sale on right now.

I've never seen anyone promote it before online or locally, I always assumed it was one of those games that always floats around and continues to exist without much happening, like Wargods of Aegyptus or Urban War.

I like the idea of the game overall and I love the C.O.R.E, and somewhat the Brood but a lot of the other have too much of a "bondage" feel and drab colour scheme to them for me to enjoy. I am down if a new faction came out. Also I like terrain heavy games so I suppose that this is a bit terrain light (yeah that doesnt make much sense but that is how I work). That being said I may pick it up one day if I was in a community that loved it (right now I dont even really have much of a community at all as I refuse to play 40K).

I have a mess of the models, having used them as counts as for various 40k and Necromunda projects, and they really are quite nice. Marc and his boy are local to here, so maybe one of these days I will start playing the actual game.

I can definitely recommend the models, however!

At first I thought "This is gonna be another sales pitch" and was hesitant to read the whole thing, but I'm actually really impressed with what I'm seeing.

The fact that once you buy a rulebook you can trade it in for an updated one is INSANELY awesome. Really impressive. Also nice that you provide free electronic copies. The sculpts for the Core and Forsaken appeal to me.

I'm pretty full up on the gaming docket at the moment, but I'm definitely going to check out the free PDF rules and maybe try a game or two.

Also I was going to mention some of the art reminded me of Dark Sun, before I re-read the credits and realized you actually hired Brom. Color me jealous!

The CMoN connection doesn't necessarily help either.

I met some of the guys at Templecon and bought the Saint Luke model (its an awesome sculpt) and they were nice enough to give myself and two or three of my friends copies of the current rulebook for free which I thought was cool (both of those friends already play). The only reason I'm not actively playing the game is that I like the time and space to start something else right now. That being said, the rules seem solid, the models are gorgeous, and it looks like its a system that could potentially give Warmachine/Hordes (my current love) a serious run for its money. I will definitely be diving deeper into it as my situation evolves.

This game is totally not terrain light.

I play DA on boards that are similar to Infinity Boards: As in, packed to the gills in terrain, and no sight lines longer than 12-18 inches half the time. It plays very, very well on heavy boards, and a core unit of my faction (the Wasteland Warriors) perform best when swinging rooftop to rooftop.

I'm disappointed Mr Black hasn't returned to the thread and kept it going. I think there's a few folk that could be swayed by an official voice.

The new models are great, the new armies interesting.

Only problem is that the past many years of models, all with that weird heavy emphasis on bondage fantasy and the same dingy brown color scheme in the art.

So while 1-2 people might be able to claim the new armies as their army, such as with my gaming group, anyone else that wants to pickup a different army to avoid mirror matches will be stuck with the older stuff.

I love the Core faction, just don't need another ruleset to learn at the moment...

And just to talk about some additional things in the pipeline... We're revamping the March to Immortality Tournament Format for 2015, which will now include around ten Primary Missions and thirty Secondary Objectives.

Hmmm really? Well if so that is one more barrier out of the way. Maybe if people around me played now. I think I may get into this but a bit later as I am moving next year and no one around my area plays (No car and the area is only GW people).

I've been seeing pics of both the artwork and the new sculpts that are coming down the pipe, I think I'm going to be jumping in head first very soon...

I think if I was to start Dark Age it would be with one of the new factions. The rest seem a bit dated or filled with themes I'm not really looking for in my miniatures, except maybe the Elemental aliens

Wow, that rules policy is pretty intense. I've been interested in the minis for some time, but that just pushed me further. I'll definitely be checking stuff out more, now.

Those are some pretty great policies, I'll have to give the rules a read to see if they interest me. There is definitely a hugely noticeable difference between the new factions and the old though that's kind of jarring.

So I'm interested enough to download the rules tonight (or this weekend), and I'll check out the models.

Now tell me more about this free rules trade-in business and how it actually works on a practical level, bearing in mind that I live in Australia and that some of my local retailers are quite douchey.

Whilst the idea of free & freely exchangable rules is an awesome carrot to dangle in front of someone disgusted with GW after 20+ years of 40k play but the models just don't do it for me tbh. Nothing WRONG with them, but just not an aesthetic I care for. I prefer a mix of Fallout & Rage. I looked over the factions hoping to find something I could port my preexisting 28mm collection in as to allow them to be more than just shelf decor & I just didn't see anything.

Well, considering that they are providing the rules for free, and ergo expect to make money from miniatures sales, I'm pretty sure that they don't mind all that much that you cannot use your existing minis collection with the game... Also, I'm pretty sure the Outcast and Forsaken scream "Fallout" but that might just be me.

I'll start Dark Age when I get better customer service from CMoN than I currently do as an EU backer of Relic Knights.

So long as it's done civilly, discussions of customer service of a game company are fair game.

Some of their models I really like, some are way over the top for me. I've just seriously started to get into Infinity now but this has my interest especially since GenCon gets increasingly more expensive each year it seems. Not that I think I would win but it is a nice opportunity for players. Now I wonder if there are 24 or more players that play this in a Portland, Oregon area....
