Been Around the Block

In a fed up mood tonight so I thought I'd create my own thread on my very own ( diminished, neglected ) painting skills for some criticism and feedback/ opinions.
Its a WIP and nowhere near done, all insignia and weathering to finish, edging to clean up, details to do, parts to add etc ( theres a long list )
But having said all that its been fun and I have enjoyed painting, and repainting and repainting areas and getting to grips with new paint formulas that I'm SO NOT USED TO!!!!! and struggling.
fun fun fun..... but give me a motorbike helmet anyday to airbrush !!!!!!!!
Forgive the pics, they are crap and taken with my phone and no lightbox but it will give an idea of where Im heading. I want it dirty and beat up but not abused or uncared for, just in the middle of a campaign and a bit used looking right now. Armour is done with a 50:50 clear and flat red mix over a preshaded base with everything else so far hand painted.
Im shooting for a upper end tabletop standard that isnt hard to replicate but its very much a work in progress and some areas have nothing more than a quick basecoat so far
Should be finished in a day or two depending on personal circumstances, I think Im happy enough on the most part but deffo need to get to grips with some new techniques this is a testbed for trying out and see how they are received first mini I have done for myself with no plan or anyone else telling me what to do.

You need to chip the gold a bit. Silver dags, with a dark brown/bronze centre work well and are quick and easy.

Yeah it's not really been touched yet except with a little oil wash. Can't really decide what way to go with it tho, I was thinking of shining it up to a bright silver as if it was brass/gold plated and worn through over the years to silver again, similar to how I did the brassy intake cover areas but I'm not sure if it would have the right look.
Suggestions?

I wouldn't shine it up too much more, reserve the bright silver/gold for edge highlighting to make the detail crisp.

What would your suggestion for tackling it be? Im in 2 minds really and thats why I have left it so far as it is, I want it marked and weathered/damaged but cannot decide what would give the best effect, if its brass then verdigris is the way to go but that means uncared for and poorly maintained, not what an active imperial knight would be like in my eyes.
Would it even chip at all? Perhaps just light scores and some shading would be the answer.
not sure but its bugging the heck out of me at the minute and I want to finish it.

mmmmmm yep that looks pretty damn snazzy. I like it a lot, that's a stunning job you have done on the Titan. I love how the damaged areas are understated and not in your face.
Chips it is then.
Thanks

Warning: All sarcastic and in jest!
Oh just sod off! 20 years break, naff photos and a crappy paint job indeed. Got back into the hobby with a nice small model, yeah? Something to get back into the swing of things? Pffft, you disgust me.
/jokes.
Seriously, this is very nice stuff, especially considering it's WIP. Post like this that make you wonder why not just field a load of grey plastic and not bother. Nice work!
Edit: Can't spell, apparently.

Yeah, very much like you I didn't think an operational titan would be damaged so much as just a bit *worn*.

LOL brilliant, that made me giggle and thanks very much to you all for the kind words and encouragement. To address why its a knight and not a smaller mini is that they are easier and have more scope to play with effects/try stuff out also it landed in my lap as a payment from a friend I was helping out with some airbrushing. After seeing some on the net and the paintjobs etc I couldnt resist trying, but good God is it hard to get back into the swing of things again, I'd do a bit and look at it thinking " mmm it wasnt ment to turn out like that!!!" and scrub it out and redo it again and again. When away from the hobby you really do forget so much and brush control is out the window altogether!!!
Its fun tho and I dont want to get away from it again, I love painting. Wish I could do it all day and make enough to live on.

I long ago resigned myself to the fact that experience just tells you to run with the mistakes you make rather than balls things up trying to correct. All the cracking on the titan I did was originally meant to be just a bit to cover a surface flaw on one of the guns, but I took it a bit far... and then had to keep going for about 50-60 hours. Sanity frayed a bit there.

hehehehe I know that feeling well and its not just confined to mini painting I can assure you! In your titans case its helped the overall look. out of curiosity what way were the cracked outlines done? pen or brush?

I do all freehand by brush. I find pens have a tendency to blob more, and it's easier to work with thin paint and build up lines with strokes with a brush. If I need really precise line work or consistent designs doing, like for the warhound designator mark (yellow rectangle area) on the shin, I often print a line-art decal, apply it, then colour in with brush work.
