Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso.
Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying.
The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added.
Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said.
"In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said.
The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair.
In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said.
Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported.
Hope this has a happy ending.

Unfortunately, everyone on board is most likely dead. I agree with Jihadin, though, I don't want to see the reaction if it turns out Al-Qaeda brought the plane down.

Unless on take off or approach for landing, it is pretty darned unlikely a MANPAD took it down. I would guess maintenance issue or crew error (or a combination) with bad guy(s) on board as a less likely possibility.

Yahoo is reporting that the plane crashed.
http://news.yahoo.com/missing-air-algerie-flight-crashed-algerian-aviation-official-125402684.html
ALGIERS (Reuters) - An Air Algerie flight that went missing en route from Burkina Faso to Algiers has crashed, an Algerian aviation official told Reuters on Thursday.
"I can confirm that it has crashed," the official said, declining to give details of where the plane was or what caused the accident.
Grim news. I feel for the loved ones of those on board.

The flight crew had apparently called in a route deviation to avoid a storm.
I doubt any malicious act brought to plane down. If there was bad weather, especially with an older model plane from the company that produced the flying coffins that were the DC-10's, then it's much more likely this was simply a tragic accident.

Damn, that sucks. I guess there are no reports of survivors?

Wow, that's terrible. It is now what? 3 planes in a row?
I guess with the amount of planes flying around it is bound to happen but sucks nonetheless.

Not sure about '3 planes in a row'. MAL 370 was in early March. A lot of planes have flown between then and now. And there have been other crashes in the time too ( http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/transasia-airways-plane-crash-kills-51-in-taiwan-9623632.html for example.)

Statistically, 2014 in aviation has been about as bad as 2010 when we had a lot of crashes, and the most significant one being the Polish president's death while flying over Russia.

Feels out for the people of the plane and their families, and the Taiwan crash as well. Bad year for the airline industry.
Lots of craziness happening, so much tension in the world right now! Everyone please be safe!

Yeah I meant the transasia crash this month too. (technically the one in Ukraine wasn't a crash)
