G'day guys,

Almost finished my first attempt at a tank (still have spot light and headlights to go) and in doing the weathering I'm afraid I've gone a bit overboard... should I dial it back a bit? Any pointers on what to add or how to smooth it over?

I was going for a rather worn muddy look...

Any feedback welcomed.

Its looking good to me. If anything I may suggest dry brushing some subtle splatters of mud here and there to give a little bit of a splashed/slung look to help give the effect of motion. Look at some real muddy tanks on Google images for inspiration. Nothing like comparing something to the real deal to help add a little extra realism to the paint job.

This is really good for your first ever try at a tank. The amount of weathering and effects you gave it is a far cry from anything I had ever tried on my first vehicles.

In the future, you may want to try some variance and toning down in the mud/dirt effects on the tank. Currently, you have very "wet" and very "dry" mud. I think your muds contrast too much, especially against the bone color of the Deathwing's armor. I find my eyes looking at the muddy tracks moreso than the tank overall. Some of the mud is going to be drying, some of it will have turned to dust and gotten into all the crevices and running gear of the tank.

Looks good so far. IMO the mud is to far up in the 2 side sponsons. The mud levels don't match from t he treads. Other than that it looks great.

Thanks! Did a bit more looking and found some good reference pics. Added some flicks and splats. Looking much better.

Thanks! I have darkened a line of the "dry" mud between the 2 layers with an earthshade and it has given a look of "drying" mud and is a nice transition between the 2 layers!

Thanks! I agree on the levels, so since no-one has said "no! Too much!" I've gone and added more to make the mud on the sponsons fit. Once it is all dry I'll put up a few more pics.

Thanks heaps guys. Really appreciate the effort of replying.

I always think of 40k landriaders based off of ww1mark5 tanks. Always muddy because the track go up and over the top of the tank rather than modern lower treads. If you want good tutorialson weathering tanks just llook up military tank weathering. There is tons of them all over the net. Good luck

Ha! Nope. Looking for ideas and pointers from the community on how to improve what I've done. I've taken on-board and applied the great feedback I've received so far from others, however leave your spurious compliment for the P & M Showcase thread I'll post in a few days! Thanks for your time!

Thanks! Checked a few out and it's great reference material. This is what I should have been looking at initially. I think I'll tone-down the amount of mud riding up the sides next time.

Looking good for a first try.
Have a go with weathering powders, they will open up a brand new world for you. Doesn't matter which brand actually, but I would suggest you get MIG's Pigment Fixer, as regular white spirit or turpentine don't fixate it well enough.

Looking good so far.

I've been thinking ahead of how I'd do mine.
Lots up the front, what with splashing through puddles and scraping up slopes. not as much on the back, and a bit up the sides.
So, you might want to add some up the ramp at the front.
Maybe a splash or two over the upper parts of the front.
The technique is looking to be spot-on though.

I really like that you have made such a strong effect, very good to really showcase it on the tabletop. As a Deathwing lover I see that my brothers have fought long and hard!

I would actually make it dirtier by putting rivulets of staining from dirty rain dripping down the sides and so on. If the world is so muddy it must rain a lot.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I actually agree. "Rainstreaking" is a really fun effect to learn to get the hang of. That's something that should be done before the mud goes on though. Maybe next time?

Thanks guys. In my journey looking at chipping mediums I came across wet and rain effects. I reckon they are both something I'm going to try on the next one. Might even have a go in a few places on this model to get a feel for it.

As for weathering powders, I have some rust ones that I've tried out and love the effect they give. I wanted to steer away from them on this model as they give more of an "abandoned" look that I figured Deathwing tanks wouldn't have time to get rusty.

You rate the MIG fixer? I've just been using isopropyl alcohol and then sealing it with a few very light coats of Mat varnish.

Get your models on the table and looking good!

Yep. Perfect! Thanks heaps. This is great video. There's so much stuff on YouTube and it gets tiring trying to trawl through it all trying to find exactly the right info. Really appreciate it!
It is simple when you see it done like this.

I have a couple of other models I need to get finished but I'm now really itching to get into the 2nd LR.

Hey mate!

Looks really good! IMHO..... the muddier / rustier and dirtier the better!

The latter pics do look better.... the mud looks a more realistic as you have blurred the edges between wet and dry mud... good work!

I have only been going at modeling and painting for about a year and still learning that there are limitless techniques and multiple ways of doing things!

I think the advice about looking at real world armour and tank weathering is a good one!

Keep it up!

cheers,
