So after much time away from the hobby (I last played in 3rd Edition, and my last figure painted was the newly released Inquisitor Eisenhorn) I'm looking for some advice on getting back in the saddle - specifically on brushes and shapers for use with green stuff. Any and all help appreciated

Kolinsky sable brushes if you can find them (good luck!) and silicon-tip clay shapers, the firmer the better.

Well.... Welcome back to the hobby. Its a great time with a ton of great ranges out there.

Brushes are as numerous as you can imagine and they really are a personal choice.

I personally use Raphael 8404 series and love them. Some people swear by Windsor and Newton series 7. Others are fine with brushes from hobby lobby. Find what you like that fits your budget and you should be golden.

As to shaping tools. I got mine from amazon and I like them (but I am no GS expert by even a 5yr olds standards).

As far as paints go, All of the ranges are pretty good. I personally use paints from Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Game Color, Vallejo Model Color. Reaper, P3, Tamiya, and I have a few oils from hobby lobby for washes (no i dont have a problem I can stop buying paints any time i want too.....).

Good luck and post some pics.

Now with 100% more blog....

I was pricing Kolinsky brushes and they seem to be more on the premium end (although this was through Amazon).

And stores you would recommend?

Thank you, I'll be building up my hobby stuff over time so there isn't going to be anything immediate. I have been spending a lot of time doing research on some techniques via youtube.

Kolinsky sable is the gold standard for miniature (and watercolor) painting brushes, but there's a range of options within that material. Series 7s and 8404s are on the expensive side, for sure - some won't use anything else, but it's perfectly possible to get good brushes for far less.

I use Rosemary & Co. brushes, both red sable (Series 99) and Kolinsky (Series 33). Consider them, but mainly if you're looking to get a whole set - they're based in the UK, so shipping is prohibitive on tiny orders. Even so, the brushes are priced such that you can generally still get 1-3 (depending on size) with transatlantic shipping for the list price of a single brush from one of the aforementioned two lines.

As for sculpting tools, I'm also a big fan of clay/color shapers. I use these (make sure to get extra firm - they still have plenty of give and you'll barely be able to shift epoxy putties with something squishier), although I seem to recall paying somewhat less for them...

I have a set of metal tools, as well, and a few odds and ends that can work for certain tasks (ball-ended styli in various diameters, bits of wire, knife blades, etc.), but since getting the color shapers, I've ended up relying on them for probably 85-90% of my work. When I only had the metal tools, I found that, much like files, large sets are a waste - out of a dozen heads, you'll likely find that there are two or three that see regular use. Better to invest in a few quality tools that suit your specific goals/habits/style/whatever.

Kolinsky are my favorite brushes. Pretty much the only ones I use and no one else is allowed within 50 feet of them! =P
