Did Erebus actually permanently kill Argel Tal? Lorgar saw a vision of him as a Daemon Prince fighting in the shadow of the Emperors Palace. With the Primarchs Magnus and Fulgrim, they were able to have their physical bodies destroyed before ascending to daemonhood. Plus, daemons can be reborn in the warp and if him and his daemon truly were one that would imply he could be reborn. Plus they did play with the Prophecy of him dying "shadow of great wings" when he was kind of killed by Corax but transformed instead. So him dying in the shadow of an aquila...

I kind of liked the character in First Heretic so hope theres something of a future for him.

As of now, yes he is dead, the prophecy was fulfilled completely and merely corrupted to erebus's version of events.

I suspect the fate of posessed people who die isn't likely going to be friendly to a return to life.

Visions are only potential futures, are they not? As I recall, Lorgar saw many, many potential futures in his visions and spent a good deal of time sifting through them to understand the choices he had to make and the events that had to occur in order to bring about the preferred outcome.

Indeed.

Erebus actually tells Argel Tal something along those lines, doesn't he?

I hope he stays dead. Argal Tal is my favourite character, but I don't like when people die and then come back in the next book. Removes all emotional effect of the death.

Chaos being Chaos it is possible he will be brought back to life, it has been done before. Also it's not the first time a vision has been wrong.

So why did Erebus kill him?

From memory, because his friendship with Khârn would have stopped Khârn from falling to Chaos completely. The death of Argel Tal allowed him to become the favoured champion of Khorne he eventually ended up as - and that was more important to Erebus than Argel Tal's survival.

Argel Tal will be back as deamon prince just to spite Erebus, chaos works in mysterious ways, a punishment for Erebus's failures!

Why would he? When you die your soul gets consumed by Daemons. I highly doubt that any of the Chaos Gods would intervene and save him, or enter into conflict with another god over one lowly possessed marine. I doubt they would hate on Erebus either seeing as he orchestrated all of the Heresy. Thing is, dispite people hating him and being seen as the bad guy, Erebus is still on the side of the Dark Gods and a favoured Apostle.

I don't know, I got the feeling he was actually a cut above a regular chaos marine and actually very close to achieving full daemonhood. If he is already one with the daemon inside him then he could be reborn in the warp.

Hell they managed to have
Spoiler:

come back after we were all sure he was dead.

They made a lot out of the confrontation between him and Erebus, would be a bit cheap if it just had him stabbed over something as small as Kharn falling to Khorn.

Also, I don't think the gods can actually stop a daemon from being reborn unless they specifically destroy its soul.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden (the author of The First Heretic and Betrayer) has explicitly stated that in his eyes Argel Tal is very much permanently dead.

except thats what makes it brilliant. at the end of the day his death came about because of petty internal politics. nothing grand and important. just petty politics. Angral Tal is very much a tragic character. his death simply completes the tragedy that was his life
