As much as I would love and buy a guard vs orks or sisters vs chaos box fundamentally GW will always put marines in the starter box, it's the cash cow line.

I would love to see a return to old proper multi part models, as much as I understand the idea snap fits are easier for new players etc you have to start putting together real ones some time and the ability to kit bash right out of the box would be a big plus to me.

I would like a Marine Vs Tau box with small but balanced forces.

Marines -
Captain
Librarian
Combat squad of marines with a special weapon
Scouts with bolters/shottys/ccw
Land speeder

Tau -

Ethereal
Fireblade
12 fire warriors
6 fire warriors
5 path finders
Piranha

3000 Points - Right Hands of the Emperor, Imperial Fists Successor
1000 Points - Right Hands of the Emperor Elite PDF force
Bolt Action 1500 pts US Army
Bolt Action 1000 pts US Airborne
X Wing - Giant rebel fleet
Halo Fleet Battles - 1000 pt UNSC Force, 1000 pt Covenant Force

Inquisition (squad of GK termies, inquisitor with retinue and a rhino) vs chaos (marines, cultists and a monster of some sort)

Some scenery would be a nice addition.

Overall gw's starters tend to be decent value but often contain meh units, stormclaw was a great starting point for puppies but the work selection was sub par with regards to what you get
For me the issue is the cost of what you need after getting the starter!
Ideally I'd like to see a HQ 2 troop and a fast attack and heavy support/elite option giving a balanced 500pt force out of the box
If only they had proper skirmish rules at that point value as well

What would a standardized renegade guard look like? Would it go with a cultist esque look with choas symbols and no mutations, choas with mutations, secessionist who essentially look like normal guard minus the imperium symbols? Or did you mean like the lost and the damned?

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

I love Sisters, and plastic monopose sprues would be a considerable upgrade to what we currently have. But, starter sets are meant to be a gateway to the game. What happens when you want to add some more models to your army and find a couple pages of 15 year-old metal models that are either hella-expensive or labelled as "No longer available?"

What would be cool is if the starter set was a bit more expensive ($125?), but included a pre-release copy of a codex that might not be available for a month or two. For the record, though, Dark Vengeance was probably one of the best boxed sets GW has done in recent memory.

Codex Marines vs Chaos Marines

1 Captain
1 5 man term squad
1 tactical squad
1 5 man scout squad
Predator

1 Aspiring Champ
1 5 man Termi Squad
1 Chaos Marine Squad
10 man cultists
Defiler

Mini Rulebook
Dice
Templates
Plastic Ruins
Army lists for armies contained
And a copy of that months White Dwarf

It'd be 200 dollars, chaos vs imperium is the simplest and most marketable box, Sisters, Eldar, Tau, Orks are all cool but marine vs eviiiillllll marine is just so classic it works.

During Christmas and Mid-Summer I'd release special boxes which contained two other armies (whatever isn't selling at the time) they'd be limited edition with one SC that cannot be bought elsewhere inside.

Sisters vs Daemons
Orks vs Tau
Eldar vs Dark Eldar
IG vs Rebel IG (just IG bits with a couple of chaos sprues)
Necrons vs Grey Knights
Etc.

This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

I was thinking regular guard with optional heads, arms, torsos, legs, weapons giving you either plenty of regular guard with small groups of full fledged mutants or plenty cultists with minor mutations.

I would rather single starter sets for every army. A set up where you get a small force, codex and rule book etc for every race. That way we arent stuck with gross non imperial guard races every time

I'm gonna go ahead and back this, as it makes the most sense.

It's been said to death, but I'll say it again.. The entry barrier to get into 40k is disgusting, and I'd gauge it as one of the main reasons GW suffers. 150$ in books is required just to play the game, and that's before supplements. Then it's another 250$ (at least) to get a small enough force to play some semi interesting games.

I donno about you guys, but not many of my friends are willing to drop 500$ to pick up a new game. =/

It would be cool to have eldar as the "good " race, maybe against csm. Or even as a long shot have the imperium cast as the bad guy, with some evil looking dkok

Blood angels V orks at Armageddon, or Nids in the Baal system. I agree with others that it should be a deacent points range (750)
BA cappy with JP, power weapon
Chaplain with JP
SP with JP
Assault Squad of 10 with 3 plasma pistols and a power weapon
Death Company of 5 with jump packs

Ork Warboss with MA and PK
Ork Big Mek with KFF
3x MANZ
2x 15 man boyz squad, on with choppas and sluggas and flamer the other with Shootas and heavy shoota, both with nob with PK and Bosspole
(not too sure on this, just going off what Ive faced this is a good opfor)

Not up to date on my nids, havent played with/against them since 4th/early 5th but here goes:
Flyrant
20 Hormagaunts and termagaunts
3x Warriors, Rending claws and Scything Talons
Trygon

Theyre all roughly even, and include a good intro to the force without needing another purchase, and should come with a few terrain features (battle for macragge style), campaign book, army lists, simplified rulebook (like DV, dont need all the special LoW stuff in it, just the simplified rules) a good number of dice, templates and a simple tape measure. Id be willing to shell out 200-250 for it.

As bad as the units themselves are, a thousand sons force given the DV chosen treatment in terms of detail would give us some dead sexy models. This would be versus some loyalist force of course, but the thought of such plastic thousand sons is tantalizing. Not sure if people would want that as a starter for a few years, though.
