Good evening everyone, I am wondering how other army's HQ's play. I play chaos and if you don't know chaos we can make our HQ's into some pretty brutal cqc monsters!! Easily the match for the loyalist equivalents. So is this a common thing for HQ's or is this just how chaos/space marines do it?
Iv only played Chaos and Space Wolves so I don't know the HQ's of ANY of the other army's

I play Chaos too. While we have one of the nastiest beatsticks around in Abaddon, the baseline Chaos Lord is, even when heavily upgraded, far from the monster that is an upgraded Chapter Master.

Tyranid HQ is about 80% of the army. Flying Tyrants with Devourers every time and often two of them. Even in my 750pt list I have two tyrants, one flying and one walking with guards as my Warlord and close combat devastation.
But then some, Eldar for example, are just to buff other units, really feeling like a leader unit guiding the others from behind the scenes. I've got a Spiritseer that is nearly worthless since I haven't got my Wraithguard yet and my Marines have a Librarian that just buffs in Biomancy.

As orks, my HQ is usually the big bad warboss charging up with a bunch of bikers ready to krump things.
As tau, totally opposite lol. My warlord is ALWAYS a buffmander tank and usually in a long ranged unit.

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

I have a good variety across my various armies. The Sons of Antaeus (Ultramarines) have a basic Captain, a Chapter, master, and a counts-as Cassius for most of their "up in your grill" needs but I also have a counts-as Tigurius for when I want to be more methodical. My Sons of Medusa (Iron Hands Raukaan) have a basic Librarian, mainly for biomancy, and an oddball captain with the betrayer's bane and a thirst for tanks. My Lamenters (Blood Angels) have a Counts-as Tycho for general Captaining, a Chaplain, and a terminator Librarian for dat divination.

Yes, really. Especially if we take an Iron Hands Chapter Master with the supplement, there is almost nothing that can take him in melee.

CSM: My Terminator Warlord has been supplanted by a Biker one. While this makes me sad, the Biker Warlord has a Bike (duh), LC+PF, MoS, SoC and the Daemonheart, so he really wrecks face in CC. His retinue of Slaaneshi Bikers with MoS and Icon of Excess is just icing on the cake.
DE: Baron Sathonyx, the guy who turns the Beastmasters unit into a Beast Pack. With S6 on the charge he isn't that bad in CC, but he's mostly a force multiplier.

Necrons:
My Warlord is usually pretty bad in combat, but good against enemy characters and MCs by virtue of having MSS.
Usually, he's more of a support HQ - with a 2+ save, Res. Orb, MSS and either Warscythe or Gauntlets of Fire.
I don't use Destroyer Lords myself, but I've heard they can form a pretty nasty combat squad when combined with Wraiths.
Dark Eldar:
My most common warlord is a Haemonculus with Venom Blades and a Liquifier Gun. He's pretty awful at everything really, but he gives his squad a pain token and brings a nice flamer along.
I was about to say that i take him because he's cheap. But, depressingly, he really doesn't seem cheap these days. Many other armies now seem to have HQs that are similarly costed, but which are also tougher and bring more to the table.

If you're playing against Necrons, there's only two things you're likely to see:
• a Destroyer Lord leading Wraiths (a pretty vicious little deathstar, with lots of S6 attacks with rending and preferred enemy, a nasty combo. Then there's the D.Lord himself, swinging a S7 AP1 CC weapon at you, with MSS and a 2+ save. Luckily he can't take an inv save, otherwise he'd be broken as f***)
• Overlord on Command Barge (take everything the Destroyer Lord has... then give it a 3++ inv and stick him on an AV13 chariot so he's invulnerable to all shots S7 or lower).
If you see them fielding anything else you shouldn't worry too much.

Many Space Marine HQs are supportive in nature. Most of the more scary combat HQs are actually the un-named chapter masters upgraded with artifacts. Dorn and Calgar are pretty strong too.
But anyway most are supportive, such as High Marshal Helbrecht, who basically gives your Black Templar army a WAGHHH

Shouldn't worry too much. An Orb bearer in a blob is still a worry (especially if it's Zahndrekh), but it's not as much of an in-your-face immediate threat like the other ones are. It's slow, so anyone playing against it will have a turn or two to set things up/get in position before having to tackle it.

My HQ for Blood Angels is usually a plain level 2 Librarian.
Not a monster in close combat, but the benefits he gives to his squad are priceless. In my opinion, a HQ should be able to help out the rest of his army, not just rampage in close combat (altough there'e nothing wrong with that).

This is true.
One of my favourite BA HQ's is Captain Tycho.
If you place him in a Drop Pod filled with Sternguard, he
- adds to their cc-capability
- improves their AT potential with BS5 combi-melta and armourbane ccw
- gives your whole army Ld10.
In short, I like the guy. With 175 points he just happens to be pretty expensive...

He's nice, but loses some of the best traits of Tycho. And not being an IC hurts him :/

is this thread about HQs or Warlords? I am currently only playing Tau as well, FE to be exact. to unlock the Seven, Farsight has to be warlord, but I've found that sometimes it is better to make another character warlord, a sacrificial pawn to be exact. If I'm taking a buffmander, I don't want my opponent to get multiple benefits to taking it out- first blood, slay the warlord, and loss of all the buffs available from it. wherever possible, the buffmander is better served not being the warlord.

I play Tau, all Tau HQ's are about being a force multiplier making the rest of your army stronger.
I 99% of the time use the Mark'O commander set up with dual missile pods, a drone controller, talisman, targer lock and put him with 6-8 marker drones. All the drones have JSJ and BS5 meaning they are agile and accurate, everything you want from marker lights while the commander can still put our 4 accurate S7 shots for a bonus.

I like to take the 80 point Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armor with a Psycannon as my warlord for my Grey Knight army. He's a good addition to almost any unit, and he's not as shiny a target as the other HQ I field.
For instance, in a larger point game I may attach him and Lord Kaldor Draigo to some Deep Striking Paladins. So he lends his power to the unit, and I can put Draigo at the front to be a damage sponge without the risk of losing my warlord first.
