So in the new codex it appears that the drop pod occupies a Fast Attack slot.

Obviously the intended use of this is that you buy some Wolf Guard Terminators, a Drop Pod, and then before deployment you put the termies in the pod and it drops as normal. However, I can't see it stating anywhere that the pod must be occupied.

So what's to stop a list like this:

Rune Priest + 9 Wolf Guard w/ Combi-Plasma
- Drop Pod

Rune Priest + 9 Wolf Guard w/ Combi-Plasma
- Drop Pod

Wolf Guard Pack Leader w/ Combi-Melta + 9 Grey Hunters w/ 2 Meltas
- Drop Pod

Wolf Guard Pack Leader w/ Combi-Melta + 9 Grey Hunters w/ 2 Meltas
- Drop Pod

Drop Pod

So the three fast attack slots are occupied by empty drop pods. You have a devastating first turn, 4 drop pods with all your army dropping, and then when the fast attack pods arrive from reserves you just drop them on backfield objectives.

As far as I'm aware there is nothing stopping it....apart from the fact you may lose friends over it. Haha.

As above; dedicated transports for SW are also now simple FA choices, meaning they can be used as would any other non-dedicated transport

Note that you have NEVER, to my knowledge, been generally required to start a unit inside its dedicated transport - so previously you could have bought e.g. long fangs a drop pod, now you buy one as FA to accomplish the same feat.

Remember if you ally in some battlebrothers they can start in your pods as well...

Totally legal and gives you some strange options. You can put Space Marine Bikes in Drop Pods. You can put basically anything from the Imperium of Man into a Drop Pod now,

Does the drop pod have an exception to the rule that vehicles can only transport Infantry models?

Oh! Derp! Yeah, you're right. Infantry only. I didn't sleep much last night.

My comment stands though. This opens up TONS of things.

Also, I feel like you probably knew the answer to that question when you asked it.

Unless either the transport or the unit has a specific exemption, only infantry can embark into transport vehicles.

You were previously unable to start another unit in a drop pod, you can't embark while in reserves, and once the drop pod arrives you can't really use it anymore. So you have to buy a non-dedicated FA one if you want someone inside that normally doesn't get one.
