Hey guys,

Now I'm working properly, I decided to finally get into this game. I wanted to ask a few questions.

1) I'm interested in Rebels, is there any reason to buy Imperials if I'm not interested in running them in game?

2) Can I make a Rogue Squadron sort of list, or failing that a Red Squadron list? So either Wedge, Tycho, Corran in X-Wings sort of thing, or Luke, Biggs, Wedge, that sort of thing? I'd honestly be happy with either. I just love actual X-Wings.

3) After the starter set which I have picked up, what else should I look at picking up?

4) What's the average sort of game size? From what I can see online it seems to be about 100 points, is that accurate?

I'll be really grateful for your help in starting this new game.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

1) yes, to guarantee you'll have an opponent & to get the upgrade cards not available to just rebels

2) most of the rogues are in X-Wings but several are in other ships.

3) if you search this very topic you'll find volumes on that very question. Ultimately it's all what you want.

4) 100pts is the standard

Good advice already given, so I will just add my personal slant on it.

Buy the ships you like the look of while you are learning, then when you get it you can focus your purchases.

Get a good list app and read through the pilot skills, and modifications you can add to your ships.

Finally if you buy some of each side you can introduce your mates easier, more players equals more fun even if they don't end up buying their own.

1. Upgrades are a big part of the game, and I don't like waiting for them to be proliferated out. I've played about 4 games with Imperials (compared to...a lot more with Rebels), but have at least one (and in a few cases more) of every Imperial ship save the Bomber and Aces.

2. Yes. Wedge, Wes, Hobbie, Tarn and Luke are in X-Wings. Tycho, and Gemmer Sojan are A-Wing Pilots, Corran is in the E-Wing, Ten Numb, and Ibtisam are in B-Wings. (Going by names I recognize from the Wiki page/knew from Books or Movies). Red Squadron too with Biggs, Luke, Porkins, Wedge and Garven.

3. 2nd Starter set (extra dice, and extra X-Wing specifically, getting the extra Ties and everything else makes the price worth it over just buying separately). Then an X-Wing expansion. That'd be the bare minimums. The Rebel Transport is a good buy since you like X-Wings, the pilots it comes with (Wes, Porkins, Hobbie, Tarn) are all great. After that it really depends on what you want to do. I had a list of recommendations, but it was more for people interested in competitive play, and didn't take Imperial purchases into account too. You can't go wrong with just picking up one of everything over time, trying it out and then deciding if you want more.

4. 100 points is the current standard for regular play. 300 Points for two player Epic play. 200 per person for Team Epic. There are others, but I have no familiarity with them.

Thanks for your help so far, that's a shame I can't put Tycho or Horn into an X, so I guess I'll go with Red Squadron. From reading around, it seems like a common squad is basically the Trench Run gang (Luke, Biggs and Wedge) with a bunch of upgrades. That sounds like fun, so it's what I'll work towards practicing with (starting at low points level with 3 regular X-wings, then gradually adding extra cards and what not until I get better). After that, who knows.

Thanks for your help guys.

What would be a good way to spend about £200 in the UK to get a medium size setup for X-Wing? I am starting from nothing. I want something that will let me do a variety of fun games straight away and provide a good basis for expansion in the future. I was thinking:

Two starter sets (£52)
One X-Wing (£10.95)
Rebel Transport with X-Wing (£46.95)
Two B-Wings (because I like them) (£25.90)
Two Tie Interceptors (£21.90)
Two Tie Fighters (£23.00)
Slave 1 (£19.95)

Total == £200 approx. depending exactly where bought online.

Would I do better to buy fewer standard ships and get some of the special ones like Imperial Aces? It seems to me that the basic versions offer a fair bit of variety through the pilot and upgrade cards.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

You really won't need more than 1 TIE Fighter expansion. If you really want more TIEs, get another starter set.

The Rebel Transport is fun, but if you're just starting out I would pick up some other small ship expansions instead. Bombers, Imperial Aces, Defenders, Phantoms are all fun on the Imperial side. A HWK-290 or Y-Wing will make a great support ship. What's really missing from your list is a Millennium Falcon -- put that high on your list.

Keep in mind that Rebel Aces is coming out soon, and will include an A-Wing and a B-Wing (but different ones from those in the expansion packs). Imperial Aces will give you 2 Interceptors. I'd probably not pick up 2 of any expansion for a while, but work on picking up 1 of each so you don't end up with extras that you'll rarely use.

Starting with this haul is what I'd call a dream come true.

I definitely like that you are thinking two starter sets plus an X-Wing and at least one TIE Fighter expansion. That is a very solid start any way you look at it. The rest is really down to what you are enthusiastic about trying.

IMO you have chosen some cool stuff. I am a big fan of the GR-75 set, not least of all because of the cool new X-Wing aces. And the GR-75 itself can function as either part of your Rebel list in Epic play or as terrain. It's by far and away your most expensive item on the shopping list but well worth the price. OTOH, you could get a fair few more fighters and/or a YT-1300 for that amount. Personally, I think the GR-75 is not an essential starter buy.

There is also nothing wrong with buying two B-Wings given the popular XBXB lists, which you will no doubt have fun flying if you already favor the B-Wing just as a SW fan. I would suggest, however, buying one B-Wing and one Y-Wing or A-Wing just to sample the wider Rebel flavor as you start.

Starting out, I would definitely recommend getting two Interceptor expansions over the Imp Aces set. Imp Aces has a lot of very cool stuff in it but it is the icing on the cake of the regular expansion, which is very very strong.

Rounding out you Imp list with the Firespray is an interesting choice because it is a fun, quirky ship to fly. I think this is a great way to add flavor to your starting experience with Imps, otherwise it's all speed and aggression. The Firespray rewards cunning.

Yeah, it is odd to see someone starting without a YT-1300. Some people call flying that ship "easy mode" because the 360 arc is very forgiving. It's tissue paper in the rain against a TIE swarm, however, unless you have a plan. Getting a YT-1300 and a few other fighters is probably a better idea than getting a GR-75.

Actually now you mention it a third starter set has about £33 of models in it for about £26 and is good value from that angle.

It seems as if some of the sets are in short supply. Is that because Fantasy Flight cannot manufacture them quickly enough given their commitment to new releases?

FFG's distribution model is notoriously frustrating. Something to d do with not resupplying until everything is completely sold, I don't really know the details (ask someone who runs a LGS). But just wait a bit on whatever you cannot find at the moment; do NOT pay crazy eBay prices. The stuff will come back into stock in a few months.

The Starter Set is a great value because you will use those "extra" dice and templates, believe me. The trick is getting one each of the TIE Fighter and X-Wing expansions for the new pilots and cards. Would be a shame not to have Wedge and Howlrunner.

Depends how the local setting is and if you plan on doing tournaments. Most all of the cards are available to print out online and put in a sleeve, then you not need the expansions or the rebel transport expansion, just buy the starters and then wait for rebel aces to come out and possibly the scum and villainy expansion for cheap ships.

I prefer to have 'real' cards though, so I buy all the expansions.

I figure, why not tack my newbie question on here instead of making another thread.

Where do you get upgrade cards? IE, if I wanted R2-D2, where do I go to get him?

In the case of R2-D2 you buy the core set.

If you use the squadron builder here you can see where a given card comes from, on the right hand side when selected.

Upgrade cards are included in the core set and various ship packs. Most cards appear in a couple of different packs. There are various X-wing squad builders available online - some of these show you which cards appear in which packs.

Unless you have a big reason to get the rebel transport I would advise getting things like a millennium falcon (though it may be sold out), imperial aces instead of the second interceptor so you get more interceptor pilots, potentially an e-wing, and if you want to run a big TIE swarm 7-8 TIE fighters is a strong list and 3x core sets + 1-2 TIEs would get you there.
