This Black Dragon looks damn cool! But isn't it a nurgle thing having a horn on the forehead?
I think I'll end making my own Blood Angel / Flesh Tearer / Lamenter inspired chapter.. There is too many inspiration coming from all these guys to focus on one already-made chapter. I guess I'll soon end in the dakka fiction place :-D

I'd also go with Raptors.
They have cool fluff, an awesome color scheme, and pretty decent rules (they are a successor of the Raven Guard).

Normally because Nurgle critters' other horn has rotted and fallen off.
Besides, the picture clearly depicts a crest, not a horn.

I like the Hawk Lords: purple and gold looks striking on the table top. They use low-altitude thunderhawk insertions instead of teleportation or drop pods, so even devistators have jump packs and they have to modify their dreads to survive the drop.

dethork wrote:Another for the Space Sharks. If I didn't already have my own invented chapter I'd have Sharks.
I also vote Space Sharks. There isn't a grimdarker Chapter in the Imperium. Even so, how can you not love the heroism in this?
The 7th Black Crusade was one of the Black Crusades led by the infamous Chaos Champion Abaddon the Despoiler and his Black Legion, launched out of the Eye of Terror in 811.M37. When the Blood Angels Space Marine Chapter battled against the Chaotic horde at Midian, Abaddon singled them out with implacable fury. He led a band of Khorne Berzerkers into the teeth of the Blood Angels' Devastator positions. Even the Blood Angels' own Assault troops could not dislodge the frenzied warband and recapture the bodies of their comrades. But there is an obscure reference to the Blood Angels being saved by an unidentified Space Marine Chapter of mysterious origin. Written within the The Canticle of Cassandria Lev - Vol. CVI is the eponymous Sainted Sisters' highly mythologized and oblique account of the wars of the 7th Black Crusade is found mention of a "grey-clad" Space Marines Chapter who came from "The outer night" to aid the Imperium, and whose "Jagged maw did swallow the stars ..." and whose "... black gaze did mirror the void of oblivion". In the course of the canticle this Chapter's ships set upon Abaddon's forces following the disastrous defeat and routing of the Blood Angels at Midian and attacked the pursuing forces as Saint Lev writes: "...fell upon the servants of the skulled-one with great fury from the darkness, unseen as the beast that lurks beneath the black waters, death for death, blood for blood...thus were the Sons of Sanguinius bought respite, and did turn back upon their pursuers and so were the damned traitors of the false gods driven unto their ruin." Images of these events can be found upon the walls of the crypt-world of Hypasitis created to house the honoured dead of that war, depicted in repeated fresco and bar relief, but curiously the faces of the intervening Space Marines there depicted are obscured with featureless disks of black obsidian. Given the largely unknown history of the star-faring Carcharodons Chapter, accounts of their activities can only be constructed from recorded historical incidents and fragmentary records that are believed to have involved the Carcharodons on balance of evidence. This notable engagement is listed by Imperial savants as a '[Special] Probable Encounter/Recorded Sighting' of this notorious Chapter.
I also dispute the World Eaters origin in favor of Night Lords.
"Tactically, during the Badab War, the Carcharodons operated almost exclusively as a rapid-strike force, disdaining any kind of protracted engagement whenever possible, preferring to approach their targets either with extreme speed or by stealth, which allowed them to strike with the element of surprise on their side whenever possible. Those few who observe a Carcharodon assault and live would be forgiven for assuming that they are mindless berserkers, unconcerned with tactics or planning. In fact, the Carcharodons rely on a series of tactics that at their heart are both simple and reliable."

Another vote for Carcharodons, my favourite SM chapter by a long way, just about to start an all drop pod army for them.
Buying my first few sets of MK 5 Heresy Armour tomorrow (So expensive... )
Just a bit more information about their origins. If you read the forge world HH: Extermination book in the raven guard section it practically states their 7th Battalion and other elements being an origin of the carcharodons.
Look at the markings on the armour, look familiar.....
A few excerpts from the book:
"As with most of the Legions, there were other elements detached to serve elsewhere. A small number, mostly Terrans of the Legion of old, had been assigned to serve beyond the fringes of the Imperium, some in independent " nomad predation" fleets"
"One of these fleets was in fact commanded by the Legion's former commanding officer -Shade Lord Arkhas Fal- on the direct order of the Primarch when Corax took over the Raven Guard. What became of the Shadow Lord, his fleet and the other elements may never been known, and the fact that Corax appears to have made no effort to recall them suggests they were considered a body apart from the bulk of the Legion"
Pg138 HH: Extermination
"It is known that some of the 7th Battalion survivors pf the Battle of Lysithea were assigned to duties with a so-called ' Nomad Predation' fleet dispatched with sealed orders into the outer darkness around the time that the XIXth legion with its primarch."
pg140 HH: Extermination
All of the underlined phrases appear identically in the badab war entry for the carcharodons.

I always thought that the Vorpal Swords were pretty sweet.
The only Chapter to be sent on the Abyssal Crusade and survive and stay loyal. After purging hundreds of worlds in the Eye of Terror, they came back to the Imperium and their Chapter Master, Konvak Lann, promptly smashed up all the relics honoring St. Basillius (the guy behind the Abyssal Crusades), wiped out his legacy, and basically declared him to be an agent of Chaos (which he probably was). You have to admit, that's a pretty awesome backstory.
Unfortunately, they haven't gotten so much as a color scheme from GW.

While technically true, the Doom Legion also survived, kinda. Only half the chapter went on the Abyssal Crusade due to their responsibilities of protecting a specific region of space. The half that remained behind are still loyal.

Gonna list some armies a few here have already mentioned. My favorite lesser known Chapters are Carchorodons, Celestial Lions, Lamenters, and Raptors. Old Mentors were cool as well.
Personally my favorite of them has to be Lamentors. Would advice against them though as they are yellow and it's honestly always been a pain to paint. For a reason why, look no further than an excerpt: SELECTED BATTLE HONORS: The Liberation of Slaughterhouse III, The Corinth Crusade
They are unlucky as hell and just keep on suffering more and more but darn it if they aren't somewhat inspiring.

I will echo the scorpions... They also love apothecaries! So much so that their vet sarges can be upgraded to them.
Barring that, perhaps a blood angels successor? Their sanguary priests are basically super apothecaries... I've always been partial to the flesh tearers, and in my mind they are the perfect level of obscurity... Everyone knows BA... Most people have heard of Gabriel Seth as the chapter master. And almost no one actually plays the chapter.

What about the cursed founding chapters? They are all about anti-Codex themed as it gets.
The Flame Falcons would spontaneously burst into flame that didn't consume them. The Black Dragons had the bones shown in the picture above. The Sons of Anteaous have metal bones and who knows what other mutations.
Or if you have a chaos bent, the Blood Gorgons. All these chapters have little more then scraps to go off of, so you could use any rule set you wanted and they have good customization options to show the abberent gene seed.

I tried different wikis, but I sort of got lost in the lists.
As for the chapter, I would like one far different from the usual marines, in order to have fun converting them and giving my minis a special look, possibly a chapter not dealing with chaos. Especially I have a thing for Apothecaries.
If you like apothecaries I can suggest two chapters. Firstly the red scorpions. A forgeworld supported army where veteran sergeants can be upgraded to apothecaries. Great history in the badab wars and a model for their chapter master Culn. The second is my favourites the celestial lions. Awesome colour scheme and my favourite history for a chapter. Think space marines from Kenya. The inquisition had the chapter virtually wiped out on Armageddon by using vindicare assassins to take out all their apothecaries whilst feeding them bad intel on the orks. The chapter was taken under the wing of grimaldus of the black templars and are now slowly rebuilding the chapter. Covered in white dwarf articles and one novel all about them.
