Just a dude here. I'm just wondering if we can make a hate-free discussion involving theft. I'm just wondering, for any of you guys, has the temptation of that box on the shelf ever got the better of you? Have you ever looked at the price tag and thought 'gak I can just pop this into my bag and leave'?

I will be the biggest guy here and admit that I have at the old store I visited. Matt, if you're reading this dude I stole that warboss that one time and I'm sorry.

Last time I bought something GW related in a store was like 12-15 years ago and the prices were okay-ish back then, so there was no temptation.

Dang, where do you get your things now-a-days? In Australia a dreadnought costs about 75$.

How exactly are we supposed to have a "hate-free" discussion on something that is clearly worthy of hatred? If you steal from a GW (or from any store) you are a and you should be ashamed of yourself. End of discussion.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I buy everything online, Ebay mostly. Sealed kits go for 20-40% off GW prices. You just have to be patient.

Honestly I don't think it's worthy of shame and honestly it all depends on the circumstances. Sometimes you just can't afford something so expensive and think that someone won't miss it. Is stealing a little plastic model worth of hatred? I don't think so, honestly.

I do remember it being tempting as a punkass kid but no. Interesting thread.

Might not be worthy of hatred but it's definitely worthy of shame. It doesn't depend on the circumstances at all. It's not like you stole a loaf of bread to feed your starving family, you stole a plastic model you had no vital need of because if was a bit too expensive for you.

Yeah, because the guy running the shop certainly doesn't need to run his shop well, or get his paycheck, or keep his job.

Sorry, but the "but it's expensive" line is complete nonsense as a justification for theft. It's selfishness through and through.

While GW's pricing has gone beyond reason, theft is theft. I won't share a feeling on the level of hatred about the matter, but I still frown upon your decision to steal a miniature model. I mean, if you can get away with that, why stop there? It just speaks of a very loose moral compass to me.

That said, I can sympathize with the feeling that the nicer GW models are obscenely expensive. Look for a discounter, sure. Stealing, feth no.

It's expensive, but hardly something you absolutely need, and if something is expensive, I'm sure that when itcomes time to do inventory, that it will be missed. No circumstances justify what you did, but as I said earlier, hatred isn't something I'd use. Disgust, disappointment, and condemnation? Very much warranted.

Serious questions:

1) How old are you?

2) Have you been diagnosed as a sociopath yet?

Sometimes you just can't afford something so expensive and think that someone won't miss it.

If you can't afford it then just accept that you aren't going to own it. 40k models are a luxury item, not an essential need like food or water. There is absolutely no justification for stealing one.

Is stealing a little plastic model worth of hatred? I don't think so, honestly.

Of course it's worthy of hatred. Stealing something like that proves that you're a selfish who doesn't care about anything other than getting what you want. Defending your actions proves that you don't understand basic concepts of how society works.

1) Much older now than I was when I stole it. I was like 12 years old.

2) You don't have to be a huge dick about it.

Ignore Pregrine. He is almost always like that.

While its wrong, at least say its something you wont do now you are older and hopefully wiser. It is a luxury and therefore not worthy of being stolen.

I was a poor kid and used to window shop a lot. I never stole but seeing other kids walk out with their parents and huge amounts of stuff sometimes tempted me. Thankfully I didnt steal though. Made do with what I had.

I read somewhere that when a supermarket loses a can of spaghetti, they have to sell 10 more to make up for that loss. The price tag may seem high (and when talking GW in Aus and NZ, it is high) but not as much money as you think is going to the guy as profit.

Wrong, but at least your honest about it. Just dont do it again...

I don't think I'll ever do it again. I felt like gak for months after I stole it. But yeah, I didn't grow up with money coming out of my ears either and temptation just got too tough one day is all.

Peregrine tends to be blunt about things, but he also generally tells things how they are. You ask a bunch of people on the internet if they've ever stolen anything, a petty miniature model in this case, and don't expect/aren't prepared for the backlash of people condemning your past actions? Claiming you were twelve when you did it doesn't do much when we have no frame of reference of how old you are now. Even then, you expect all of us to pardon you based on age?

Stealing is wrong, and you stole, so are in the wrong here. Someone being "a dick" in pointing this out is a lesser issue.

I've been tempted, I know people who have gotten entire armies with a 5 finger discount, but no, I haven't.

I have no sympathy for people who have and feel bad about it. You should feel bad about it, because it's wrong.

I don't care how overpriced the models are. My parents never bought me models either, I did chores to earn the money to buy models, it took me a few weeks to save the money to buy each one of my Terradons back when I started my Lizardmen army in the mid 90's at the age of 10. I think the only time my parents helped me out directly was when the GW store had a buy 2 get 1 free sale, they let me borrow some money so I could get some stuff and then I paid it back.

If you expected to post this on the internet and only get responses of "that's all right mate, she'll be right" then you're a bit naive. Peregrine may be blunt but I don't disagree with him on this one at all.

I assume this thread is going to get locked soon.

1. It's a topic that is going to get a lot of flaming and hate.

2. It's stupid to admit to illegal activities on the internet.

It was six years ago, I'm eighteen now. I regret the decision I made obviously and I've grown since then.

Then stop trying to defend it. Seriously, you made a post asking for stories about people stealing from GW, and then you tried to defend your actions based on some absurd argument that GW stuff is expensive and so of course people have to steal it occasionally. Your supposed remorse for your actions seems less like sincere regret and more like a desperate attempt to salvage your reputation after your "let's talk about how much GW sucks" thread didn't get the desired response.

Oh, and my personal position in this is slightly colored.

I had 3 armies stolen from me in a break-in. So yeah, I'm not exactly brimming over with sympathy for thieves.

Ouch. Were they all in cases? I can't imagine a thief going for minis if they were on tables/shelves. Have you gotten new models since?

I have never stepped in a GW store before, but technically I have taken from one. I have several OOP codices on my computer, since I like the fluff. I am just getting into the game, and have purchased hard copies everything I need for the game. I have not, nor would I ever consider, taking something from a store without paying for it. I got into this hobby knowing I was subjecting myself to buying huge amounts of premium priced plastic crack. If you can't afford to play, either save up until you can, or don't play. There are other games out there.

I stole a chocolate bar once…. It was a Boost Bar if i recall correctly. It was a dare on the way to school.

But from GW? Nah…. I just let them mug me for my wallet every time I go in.
