Just finished up my placement matches. Went 3/7 and ended up in Bronze I. I've never had a string of bad luck like those ten games. Two games where at least one person disconnected at the very start and never came back, one game where our ADC said, "sorry guys i have to go eat" and AFKed out, and one game where our jungler fed my mid lane opponent seven kills before the ten minute mark.
I was briefly gold towards the end of season 1, and was completely hosed by afkers in my placement matches for season 2 and wound up in bronze. Having fought tooth and nail to get out of that crap already, I pretty much don't play ranked anymore.
Hopefully I have a good promotion series.
Good promotion series. In LoL, there is not greater joke

I learned what little I can say I know about it largely through watching the League Championship Series VODs on Twitch and, when I decided I actually wanted to try my hand at playing, reading a few basic guides.
Plat 2 quite some time ago. Left because it's way too annoying with the poor matchmaking and Riot not having been interested in a friendly atmosphere among players.

Really the way to move up in ELO (especially from Bronze), is to not play like an LCS or pro player. The meta in their level of play is very different from the Bronze meta and trying to play it will get you roflstomped unless you're really good.
Moving up in rank is really about overcoming that 1 (maybe 2) idiots on your team constantly screwing you.
Champions that are really good to know in Bronze and low Silver LoL are; Shen, Gangplank, Soraka, Thresh, and Morganna.
You'll note three of the above have global ults, which is good because you can use them to save that (or those) idiots from themselves. CDR Tresh is super trolly and really effective in lower ELOs. You'll want to learn support cause moving up the later you'll end up last pick a lot and will probably be stuck with it. I mention Morganna not as a support but as a Mid. It's virtually impossible to play Tanky Morganna badly. She has spell vamp, she practically farms herself, and her ult wins team fights. You can also attempt Karthus, but Karthus is very hard to play well (especially against those like Kat and Ahri).
Yorick, Xerath, and Darius are other good low ELO picks because people that low, just don't know how to deal with them most of the time. Both are highly capable of bullying their lane into submission.
Also good for that level of play are Zed, Vi, and Fizz for their ability to just take a member of the enemy team and destroy them too quickly for the enemy to stop them. You'll quickly notice people in lower ELO's don't ward (even with the free wards) and I don't mean a ward here or there I mean good ward coverage. Good ward coverage often wins games simply because you can know what the enemy team is doing.
EDIT: Also, if you can play them well, pick Yi or Fiora. Unless its changed since I was away, no one counter picks properly in low ELO, let alone counter builds their items. I never saw a thornmail when either of these two were on the field and a Yi and Fiora uncountered and played competently just chew through teams.
To move up in rank (3 to 2 for example) you need 2 wins. I don't think I've ever managed to go three games without at least 1 troll, afk, or just plain terrible person on my team. And heaven forbid there's some plat or gold player's smurf account on the other team. To move up in division its what, 3 wins now? Yeah. Moving up in rank is so luck of the draw sometimes.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Man, you weren't kidding, LordofHats. Played hooky from work and did a few bronze games. The amount of terrible floating around is insane. Got half the points I needed for the promotion series, then fell right back down with an unabridged string of idiocy.

To that. get very good at one-3 champions then start face rolling wins rather than trying to counter pick and stuff. (unless you are actually able to)
AT low ranks its just about snowballing or getting some one to snow ball rather than actual team work.

Its like a Real time strategy game where you only control 1 unit.

LoL is this device that attaches to your brain and compels you to try harder than you've ever tried before only to be met with disappointment and shame

But visually and audially, Malz isn't as cool as Vel.
