The world is my gym - the mountains, the rocks, the trees. Pay a monthly fee? Never!!!

If I want to work out, I'll climb a mountain or swim a river

OR you know you work out on your own time, get your own exercise equipment, run and keep records of your training.

A mountain or a steep hill, is the only exercise equipment I need!

Also ankle weights and lots of pull ups and push ups help.

Was actually thinking of just heading over to the Playground and make shifting that into a gym during the 4-6 AM hours; rope tied around a weight thrown over the monkey bars, for instance.

Eh, vocalization does actually have a demonstrated, positive impact on power lifts. I agree that it is annoying (though that's what iPods are for), but it is not lacking in purpose.

Exactly the sort of money saving ideas I was going on about.

Honestly, I would get into a routine before you even think about going to the gym.

I have a free membership through work plus free access from school. I have gone to the gym 4 times in 7 years. I hate gyms.

Best way to build up stamina and muscle is simple things you go do at home (should say build up to the point that it is worth going to the gym).

Running (I like runkeeper right now, has some great free training plans)
Push-Ups (I did the 100 push ups a day training for a couple weeks till I got sick, going to restart on Monday)
Sit-Ups (100 push up guys have a sit-up program too!)

Just those will help build up arm muscle and start your abs. After a couple weeks of that I would add in fancy stuff like burpies and planks and what not. There are literally thousands of daily routines you can do at home with zero equipment (a pad would be nice if you have hard floors).

Then once you have an actual routine started and works for you, think about the gym. For the price of 2-3 months you can get some great running shoes instead (and get the best shoes you can afford, and get them from an actual running shoe store, not a big box sporting store).

I would actually recommend cross-trainers unless OP intends to do some serious running, with Mizuno being my go-to.

Yep, reports I've read have suggesting/stated around a 15% increase in energy use, where that 15% can mean successfully completing the lift or not. I believe that, especially with an exercise like the squats, where the "corset muscles" are used, a loud yell/shout/scream activates those muscles and provide a stronger core/platform to help you push through the lift.

Honestly, the reason why I'm wanting to go to the gym more than going out and doing things elsewhere is so I get out of the house more.

I dunno, I know I get benefits at my job, will have to ask if they have a gym membership among them.
