So with the release of End Times, it appears that GW is trying hard to push their failed model from 40K into fantasy. Lets sell undead to everyone and let everyone summon undead like demons in 40K.....feth the fluff....or any semblance of balance within the game.

Failed would imply that no one uses said model which just isn't true. It may not be universally liked but that doesn't mean it's failed.

End times is just a different way of playing the game. Its not replacing WFB altogether so you ain't exactly being forced to use it. Its hardly going to "destroy" fantasy.

You obviously play little to no 40k. Daemon summoning lists from non daemon armies are rare in non fluffy situations. They are not competitive. At all. At all. You perils on any double. Your psycher is dead turn two usually. That or you don't have enough warp charge dice to make it work. So failed model no. Look at the last two majors BAO and Nova. Daemons are in the top ten but not one non-daemon summoning list.
The lore of undead is good but not easy to cast. It is only game breaking with nagash casting it. He triples whatever is summoned.
So relax. It's hardly what you think it is. The lords at 50% is far more worrisome for me. I play Beastmen and my characters are no where as good as some other armies.

This!
I love when people see something big coming out and think it's the the end of gaming as we know it. I for one am excited by the plethora of new fantasy models that are supposed to be coming out, as it is my mind is BLOWN by how awesome the Nagash and Arkhan models are. Not a big fan of Manfred (who looks like a mutant) or Neferatas head though.

This post is strictly from a tourney perspective.... yes demon summoning lists are not hyper competitive, but it goes beyond this to the allies, supplements and dataslates tat create a dull predictive and broken tournament scene. Look at the top lists and you will go "yup... typical, expected that... oh look another exactly the same". 40k has cornered itself into a couple broken combos of armies and you either play them, or you play fluffy and get smashed. This stems from GWs feth everything lets try to sell everything to everybody concept with complete disregard for any semblance of balance. What I'm saying is when I play my chaos against your elves, I want to see elves... not a few of the uberpoint efficient units, cobbled with some dwarf artillery and a Empire wizard summoning undead. Which is what alot of 40k has come down to, and you better believe GW will shove this into fantasy if we allow it.

I'm sure you can go to a "non end times" tournament. Oh look.........problem solved.

Yes, because Warhammer players are so abundant that splitting them in to smaller groups by dividing them between different types of the already niche game sounds like a swell idea. If you just said "I like it better the way it's heading" then I could at least respect that. But the reasoning of "you don't have to play with them then, just split off and follow alternate rules" is terrible! That's a great way to destroy the whole scene.

As was mentioned I'm much more annoyed by 50% Lords and Heroes than everyone having Lore of Undeath. They did it just so you could include Nagash in normal point games to try and move that model off the shelves, but it smells too much like the Herohammer days of 7th. I like the armies to actually look like armies rather than a single block of core troops and a bunch of characters. If I wanted that I'd play warmahordes or 40k.

I think it's just a campaignish book like SoM.
I see it being used for tournaments that wish (like SoM) but the main game is still the main game.
End times, T&T, SoM are all extras on top of WHFB I see no problem with expanding into different ways to play.

"You obviously play little to no 40k" - actually I do and how bout you stick to what you actually know and keep snide comments out of this.
No you don't obviously. 40k is actually rules wise in a really solid place. It would be in a amazing place if it wasn't for 1 thing. The Eldar codex. I play Eldar. That codex is the cause of most problems competitively. Daemons would be a distant second issue. Moving on.
I'm glad they are trying something different to bring excitement to the game. Don't sweat the lore of undead though. Without a way to keep them from losing less in combat res. They wont be an issue. Some of the bigger stuff will be a pain but its not easy to get off.
The 50% lords thing however. That's where issues will come from. Alot of books have awesome generic lords. Now they can take two of them (obviously not identical due to magic items). That is a much scarier issue for me. Instead of facing a lvl 4 and then some lower lvl wizards. I'd fully expect to see two lvl 4's for flexibility. That's scarier to me. Or a blender lord and then another vampire lord on a terrorghiest. Gee great....
Keeping the couple blocks hidden away from combat and watching L&H rapetrain armies. That's a concern.
On a good note people are excited for fantasy. That's awesome. It needs a shot in the arm. This may not be the best way to do it but hey WFB is the talk of the town.

You know what else it does?
It lets me field my Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon with his full magic/Vampiric Power allotment in a 2000 point game while I would normally have to tone him down slightly otherwise.
It lets me field Orion or Alith-Anar or any number of Lord choices that normally I am never going to get to use in my local community.

I couldn't agree more on the Eldar codex issue. Having had the chance to play against it repeatedly in a friendly setting recently I'm just like "whoa? Really?! - everyone rule that balances things the damn codex has an exception for"
BUT back on topic.
I seem to remember back in 2nd edition everyone could summon undead?
This seems like a return to old school.
The broken thing is the 50% lord choices as someone else pointed out, but heck I'm willing to give that a bash!

It’s worth pointing out right now that these books are no ordinary books; they’re not army books or campaign tales. These are the future of Warhammer, the first steps on the road to the End Times. If you love Warhammer, you’ll want them for your collection. Nagash is watching, he’ll know if you don’t get them, and no one defies Nagash. No one…
I think the books are clearly meant to be allowed in all games of warhammer, tournaments obviously can make their own call. In all honesty the game is not balanced however so why not allow all options? Or a better idea why not stop thinking of this game from a competitive stand point and just start playing it how the creators intended it. Play for fun use themed lists, play fun scenarios, use the terrain rules, and stop trying to pick and choose things thinking we are somehow game designers and we know how to balance it all. If we all started playing to have a good time surely it would be easier to get new players aswell.
Of course there are many whom love the competitive side of things so I imagine for them TO's mostly will not allow the Nagash stuff.

50% on lords/heroes? So you mean I can field more of the unique models I love and spend time on? Great. Do you mean my opponent might be more likely to bring big monsters? Also great as I have 3-4 cannons lined up for them.

Well the lords and heroes isn't too bad. But I don't run out of room often on those. I guess my 2k list TK list I could use that shield on my TK putting the combo to 503 with my lvl 4. People should be happy this wasn't implemented when the old DOC book was around. You'd never see a GD, those heralds were so cost effective.

As a Skaven player: My heroes have nothing on yours. Doesn't matter who you are, your heroes are better.
My Grey Seers are good. I mean he can't compete in close combat with your worst rank and file, but he's a powerful mage. Taking more of him gives me... well nothing actually. It's not like I walk away from magic phases wondering what to do with all my dice as it is.
On the other end of the scale is Vampire Counts that have heroes almost no one can touch.
Herohammer is the game where having better heroes equates directly to having a stronger army. It's a great way to throw the balance of the game out the window.
Obviously I'm not gonna like it as it sticks Skaven at the very lowest rung of the ladder, but it's not all bias that makes me loathe it. Everyone except the two or three top armies are shafted by herohammer. That's not a good system by any measure.
I don't think 50% heroes pulls us all the way back to herohammer with the current rules, but it's pretty telling for what direction GW wants to take the game, and it's a good step on the way.
You're all thinking of these awesome plays you can run at 50% heroes. My heroes aren't good enough that I'd take them over rank and file. I doubt Skaven can be the only army that can't really take 50% heroes as it would make the army useless. Is it?

As a Beastmen player. It helps me in a way but it hurts me to. I can now take a Rambull, Great Bray Lvl 4 and a kitted out beastlord for leadership. However. I either now have to sacrifice valuable chaff or blocks. Losing neither seems good on the surface. However not like 25% is helping me win games. Old army book whatcha gonna do.
However on an upside. I could take a minotaur unit with a Rambull, Doombull 4++ and Taurox. Actually holy crap that sounds awesome. I'm in. I changed my mind 50% heroes it is!!
I'm kidding. You're right though VC benefit from this the most. My best friend loves a blender lord. Now a Blender lord on a terrgheist and another Vampire lord. Those guys play prison rules. It's actually terrifying.

WHFB as a rule set is already pretty well balanced. Adding a new lore doesn't change that.
If you're wizards are using Lore of Undeath, they're not using other lores to snipe characters, buff/heal friendly units, hex enemy units, direct damaging small chaff units or getting off the truly devastating spells of the more powerful lore. There are only 2 offensive spells in the lore and both are short range. That's quite a decision every player has to make.
As a Beastmen player, the choice for me is fairly obvious, as my offensive and unit augment spells are too important to not use. Sure, I'll use Lore of Undeath here and there, just to check it out, but having read the spells, I see nothing that jumps out as must have.
As far as 50% percent lords, I'm not too worried about that either. That seems like an awful amount of eggs in one basket. Again, it comes down to hard choices. If they are taking more lords/heroes they're taking less units to soak up wounds in their lords bunkers, less war machines to snipe monsters, less chaff to delay/misdirect and less elite units to stand toe to toe with my own elite troops. None of those are easy choices for any army, as far as I know.
I'll struggle vainly against some new Army combo's for sure, but if you know WHFB, you knew that immediately when I mentioned I'm a Beastmen player!
With that said, this an exciting time to be a WHFB player and all my friends are pumped. What WHFB army do you play, OP?

I play a multitude of armies...Chaos Dwarves, All slaanesh Demons, WoC and I am a long time Brett player (don't get me started on how disappointed I am by yet still AGAIN no book for us). I have owned and sold High Elves, TK, VC, Beastmen (although all Minotaurs) all metal, cause you know you want to get your swole on while carrying your minis to the store, Night Goblins and OK. Also mind you that I am not concerned with the Nagash lists or rules per se...what I am concerned with is to see this continue to evolve into what 40K has become. 4 Different books needed to play a single army, ridiculous OP interactions between units from different armies that have never been play tested for balance, but increases model sales so feth it. Remember that GW has acknowledged they are a model company and not a game company. So they could care less about testing interactions as long as we reward them by lapping it up like the 40K community did.

As a TO (Local Level), whom plays a multitude of armies, I've decided for my events that Undead Legion armies are in! Go ahead bring Nagash and ally your VC and TK, but do so within the already in place guidelines for army construction.
I'll follow the BRB's 25%. We are also going to only allow VC, TK, and Undead to bring Lore of Undeath because we believe you wouldn't see an army of (Insert non-undead army here) resurrecting a bunch of guys to fight for them. It just isn't fluffy.
We put the cap on Lords and Heroes because as some have already mentioned we don't want people running into 3 Level 4's with Purple Sun, Final Transmutation, Triple Banishment etc.
That's just how we play it but we talked it over and feel that yes, we like the new models and lore. We like combining the Undead under Nagash because fluff. We just didn't want to completely change the landscape of the game.
We have a lot of fun with Daemons summoning in 40k but we didn't want to bring that to WHFB.
Also, @lobbywatson, you're wrong on in that non-daemon summoning lists are not competitive. One of our team members runs an IG/SW summoning list and it's brutal. When you have access to a bunch of dirt cheap Psykers that don't take up a force org slot, who cares if they die turning into Bloodthirster. Look out for the results of BeakyCon in Oct. He might just win it.

Running a big event at the end of the month here (2K pts), and I'm still on the fence about the topic
I'm definitely allowing people to bring the fancy new toys (Nagash and cronies) but I'm considering only allowing "fluffy" undead lists if they use the EoT rules
That said, I'm also considering saying "f*ck that, do whatever you want"
Sure, someone can bring 3 lvl 4, someone can bring 2 BlenderVamps, someone can bring 3 Flying DPrinces ... The list goes on
But then, what is going to really be on the table to chaff / take casualties ? They're either mostly skipping Special / Rare or the mass of Rank & File. Those armies will have severe weaknesses if they're too unbalanced
@Purifier, that's why I don't mind 50% Lords / Heroes with my Skavens, if they have less troops, my rat darts / killy toys will have a field day with their pricey characters

I agree, 8th edition has its holes (glares at magic phase) but untill 9th edition comes out there is not much we can say thats negative, End Times is similar to Storm of whatever it was. We'll buy some models barely play the campaign setting and move on.
