I rode them once to go to the Smithsonian (the same Frederickburg station). Yeah. Quite a trip. I imagine that early he doesn't have to compete with crowds either.
Still, 220 miles to work every morning. This guy clearly really loves his job and his family to tolerate that to have both. 6 Hours (more or less I think) a day, just to go to and from work. I'd just move closer and rive to visit the family on weekends XD

Really, 3 hours isn't all THAT long. I know people who commute for 2 hours one way and thats because they're stuck in gridlock.
110 miles is pretty long though.

Something about having a job where you can commute 220 miles a day and even be able to afford gas, assuming he goes by car. Someone more knowledgeable about public transportation would have to comment on the cost there.
That's about $125 in gas every week, excluding any other trips made. So, about $500/month in gas, not to mention hours of your life wasted. I could swing it probably, but it would cut big time into my quality of life.
Still, I worked with a guy who lived in Texas, rented an apartment about 5 minutes walk from work, and drove from STL to wherever in Texas (Plano, maybe) every weekend, and then back up the next Sunday night. Guy was 70-something, about 350 lbs, and managed the drive in a beat up old 1990s Nissan with no air conditioning.
I wish I was as tough as that guy was.

Yeah I've heard of long commutes due to traffic (DC area again) but I've never heard of anyone traveling that far to go to work. 1/4 of the day down the drain XD Wonder what a Project Manager for the Department of Justice even does, cause it must be pretty awesome for him to tolerate that commute.

I used to do that, drive an hour to work every day and an hour back.
It was either pay $40 for gas every three days or pay $100 for rent every day, so I chose the later.
Funny thing is, the job I'm looking at would take me back up to where I used to live, and I live where I used to work XD

I think (IIRC) that Metro pass is a $80-100 a month which is good for where ever you want to go on the rail line. He has to be ending it at Union Station in DC being that station is pretty much where all the major government building's are.
Thinking by the wording of his position he is a GS12 and up. I also think they get reimburse for purchasing those tickets

I work with a guy that drives over 90 miles one way every day. No gas allowance or company vehicle and he drives an SUV.
The longest I had to drive was 77 miles one way... It wasn't much fun. Automatically Appended Next Post: This guy's 110 mile commute is in the high range, but it isn't completely unheard of in the DC Metro area.

For DC metro, this is pretty common. I can name 6 people I work with right now in my office who commute 75+ miles one way to get to work. And when our company was bought, and the HQ in MD outside of Baltimore was consolidated to the new corporate HQ, that was in fairfax VA. I know people who live in Baltimore or north of that who commute to northern VA every day... And since there are like 4 bridges to cross the Potomac river for about 100 miles of river, makes it kinda hard to get where you need to go.
And our metro system is super slow, it can easily take 1 hour+ to go from the end of the line to the middle of the city. Many people drive 50+ miles to a metro, then an hour on the metro.
I would say this is super common in DC. People who drive from Richmond into DC daily is also super common due to the lack of jobs in Richmond and inability to afford DC suburbs.
I have a place in West Virginia which is about 100 miles from DC, and on a Friday night, if I leave work at 5:30, I can be at my cabin usually in under 2 hours, even with traffic. I would hate to do it every day but I see why people do it.

lots of people do that here too...
maybe its just cause most of the cities are farther aways from each other, but its not uncommon for people here to have 200-300 click drives from their town to the closest major city.

Doorstep to workplace, I leave at 5.10 in the morning and get to work around 8.20 (depending on traffic). Going home, I leave just before 6pm and get indoors by around 8.15.
I've been doing it since 1998.
I'm probably clinically insane by now.

Was it worth driving in the first place? If the parking lot is that big, get a bike?
I do 14 miles a day, 'cos I refuse to look for work any further away.
But, 3/4 of that time is spent doing 1/3 of the distance. Stoopid city ringroad system.

My current commute is 26 miles one-way. While the distance isn't terrible, the actual traffic can be pretty stupid. My typical morning commute takes about 45 minutes.
My worst was when I was interning while in college. I had to drive 22 miles SW to school. After school got out at 4pm, drive 17 miles NW to work. When the office closed at 8, I had to drive 28 miles E back home. It suuuuucked. Here's a picture of the wonderful circle I got to make for about three months until I finished school. All in all, it was about a 14 hour day between school, work, and commuting (not counting homework when I got home)

Yeah, its worth driving, because ten of those fifteen minutes are highway driving. Can't take a bike onto a highway in this country.
