Hello all,

I've played 40k a long time ago (Eldar) and a friend just recently got me back into the hobby. I had the luck to buy a few metal Grey Knight minis from someone and ordered some more to have an army. So, Grey Knights it is for me and I have absolutely no experience with that army and only a few introductory games into 7th edition.

Could you pro guys help me with a few questions? Would appreciate it very much! I don't have the 7th rulebook myself yet, have only read it at my friend's.

- If I understood it right I can include somehow other Imperium units like Vindicare assassins. How exactly do I do this? Do I have to include a full force organisation chart and take HQ and troops to do this? Should I buy one Vindicare Assassin?
- Are there general mistakes I should avoid with Grey Knights or things in terms of playing style that I should do in any case?
- Could someone with experience please have a look at my available models and help me with creating an army list? I will play in a semi-competitive environment where a little fluff and fun should work, but not pure fun lists I guess.
- I think I am lacking an HQ choice, which one should I buy?

My starting models:
- 30 Grey Knights (at least that's how they were labeled by the one who sold them, are they called "strike squad" now?)
- 5 Grey Knight Terminators
- A Dreadnought
- A Land Raider
- A Predator

Ordered and coming soon I hope (descriptions taken from the order list, please correct me if I didn't get unit names properly yet):
- Land Raider
- 2 Strike Squads with 10 models
- Purgation Squad with 5 models
- 2 Paladin Squads with 5 models
- Nemesis Dread Knight
- 2 Purifier Squads

Thanks a lot

I have been playing grey Knights for about 2 years now, and I am by no means an expert, and my opinions are based entirely on my experiences with other players in my local meta, which his really small and may not reflect the meta you will be playing in.

First of all, anything with power armor is interchangeable in slots which means all strike squad members, purgation squad members and purifiers are interchangeable based on what load out you have for them. Same is true for paladins and terminators. You seem to be lacking an HQ but you can model a terminator model to be a brother captain, grand master or librarian, so no worries there.

As I see it your models are as follows:
15 terminators
60 power armor
5 Purgation
1 dreadnought
2 Land raiders
Dread knight

Looking at your models I would honestly run a purifier heavy army.

Like a level 3 librarian or level 2 GM with teleport homer
1 10 man squad of terminators
1 5 man squad of paladins (body guards for your HQ if you want to spend the elite slot on it)
3 or 4 10 man purifier squads (Elite slots and with the nova power can hurt just about anything in the game including fliers)
Ignore the dreadnought, it isn’t worth the points or the slot
The predator isn’t in the codex but you could run it as a rhino razorback
The dreadknight is pretty awesome. If you can id magnetize his weapons so they are interchangeable and kit out based on situation. Always take the personal teleporter so he can deep strike and shunt.

I would put 2 of the purifier squads in land raiders, deep strike your terminators or paladins and the Dreadknight and maybe get a rhino or two for the other purifier squads.

Using the Nemesis Strike force, you can deep strike stuff turn 1 which will help and you can re roll warlord trait, hope for first into the fray

Again this is just my opinion, but I hope it was helpful.

For the Power Armour Guys. Magnatize the back packs. That way you can swap them between Strikes, Purfiers, Purgnations and Interceptors. Just apply a different colour and your in business.

With all the Power Armour guys you have would also be inclined to run a Purifier force. If you have the cash a second Dreadknight would also be a pretty good option. The Dreadknights have really good synergy with Interceptors as well and Interceptors can take Teleport Homers now so they also have really good synergy with anything that can teleport.

Thanks for the help guys! The YouTube videos are very informative for specific topics, however I haven't found one so far that covers the basics in general.

About the Librarian, I haven't found the model at GW's homepage/store. So is that model only the champion in the Paladin (or Terminator) box? Also what is it with the Brotherhood Champion, I couldn't find the model in the GW store either?

I'm willing to invest some more cash in additional models if they are good. It seems that another Dreadknight is indeed what most people would suggest.

How about a Stormraven? Should I get one of this in the long run?

Thanks and regards

First Off,Welcome to the Grey Knight Brotherhood

And now lets begin

- If I understood it right I can include somehow other Imperium units like Vindicare assassins. How exactly do I do this? Do I have to include a full force organisation chart and take HQ and troops to do this? Should I buy one Vindicare Assassin?

The Vindicare Assassin, is a unit used for the purposes of assassination. His primary job is to kill a a high priority target in the beginning of the game, make up all his points back, and then be of support by taking out targets such as characters like a (sergeant with a power fist) in a squad
You place him in apposition that over sees most of the field while is still far away from most units that would threaten him.

- Are there general mistakes I should avoid with Grey Knights or things in terms of playing style that I should do in any case?

Grey Knights when you get in the driver seat seem like a huge upgrade from having units like normal space marines who only have a bolter, because they have stormbolters, force ap3 weapons, deepstrike, and a standard stormbolter. Don't let this go to your head. They are no different from a space marine in terms of survivability but cost more. Play them with the same respect as a normal marine force except with the knowledge that you have an advantage over normal marines when it comes to combat.

- Could someone with experience please have a look at my available models and help me with creating an army list? I will play in a semi-competitive environment where a little fluff and fun should work, but not pure fun lists I guess.

I honestly saw the list of units you bought and was particularly shocked tbh. You have a great model count and in addition a nice variety.

My starting models:
- 30 Grey Knights (at least that's how they were labeled by the one who sold them, are they called "strike squad" now?)
- 5 Grey Knight Terminators
- A Dreadnought
- A Land Raider
- A Predator

Ordered and coming soon I hope (descriptions taken from the order list, please correct me if I didn't get unit names properly yet):
- Land Raider
- 2 Strike Squads with 10 models
- Purgation Squad with 5 models
- 2 Paladin Squads with 5 models
- Nemesis Dread Knight
- 2 Purifier Squads

You want it like this
2 strike squads full 10 man squad (2x incinerators magnetized to switch out with psycannons, 2x DH)
2 interceptor squads full 10 man squad (2x incinerators magnetized to switch out with psycannons, 2x DH)
2 Purifier squads full 10 man squad (2x incinerators,2 psycannons 2 Daemon Hammers magnetized 4 models with swords/halberds)
2x DreadKnights
2x 10 Terminators/Paladins (Usually you only use them as either or, in addition most of the time you only bring 10 paladins, but in cases people have run 20 terminators)
2x LR (Probably don't need to now, you wont be using them often..)
2x Stormravens (Important if you want to run pure GK)
2x Dreads (magnetized arms so you can outfit for close combat or autocannons)

Yea.. it's a lot but if you get all this... you wont have to collect anymodels again until the next codex in the case they bring out a new model (Which wont be for a while since the last codex was released like 2 weeks ago)

As far as list go... There are a number of threads open to help you with that and give you a direction as to which way you want to play.

My thread (A bit more analytical and directed towards tournament players)

Hope this comes to help. This army has a pretty high learning curve this edition since last edition and certainly the edition before that, however you will be very enthused when you come to learn how to play them, because they are indeed a very fun army to play
If you have anymore questions, just post here or on either of the 2 other threads above. I'm sure somewill help answer your questions

I played a game allying with a friend who was using GK. Just one point, Deep Strike or Transports. They die just as quickly as normal marines. But cost more.

Wow, big thanks for the long answer! I've got a much better picture now of where to go from here.

The only thing I'm still a bit unclear about are HQs. Depending on who you ask it seems either Draigo is the way to go or he is total crap. What should I start with? I think I will start with deep striking as much as possible in turn one to create pressure. I thought Draigo with Paladins should be either a fire magnet to help all the others to survive or stay unharmed and go from close combat to close combat from turn 2 on.

HQ choices: (In order of how relevant/good a unit they are)
1. Draigo
He is God this edition... nothing else needs to be said.

2. Libby
MLV3 , DH, Daemonica
Probably one of the best psychers currently in the game can get ot str 10 with the daemon hammer has acess to great disciplines and psychic powers...has a sufficient number of wounds... He's just great period.

3. Brother Captain, Grandmaster
just are not as good as the libby but you can play them (for casual play with like a psycannon on them)

4. Brother Hood champion
(he will be nigh on unkillable in melee with his 2+ re-rollable but how your going to get him there is beyond me... a rhino is going to die, a landraider is too expensive and will die and a stormraven comes on at the mercy of dice...)
