Does anybody know what the hell is going on in the Middle East these days?

If I understand it right, the situation is this:

Civil war in Syria. Two sides fighting each other.

Assad/Russia/Iran/Hezbollah Vs. Rebel groups/anti Assad groups/Turkey/ Saudi Arabia/ISIS etec etc

Assad is the bad guy, but we're not fighting him, but ISIS is bad and we are fighting them.

We're on the same side as Saudi Arabia, but Saudi Arabia is funding groups supporting ISIS

The West is randomly bombing people

And we're helping Iran fight ISIS in Iraq, even though Iran is a 'bad gu.'

Most middle eastern countries help Israel, but Israel is helping fight ISIS.

Turkey is fighting ISIS, but were letting them pass through their country

And now I'm fething confused!!!

Help me!!!

Somewhere in south-central England.

It is a terrible mess and very difficult to see any way out of it. The hands-on approach was a huge failure in Iraq and even worse in Afghanistan. The hands-off approach turned out badly in Libya. The remote hands approach isn't working in Syria.

Yet, ISIL are powerful enough to try and destabilise most of the countries in the region. The attack on the Russian airliner is not only a shot back at Russia's bombing campaign in Syria, it is also a blow to Egypt's tourism industry and will affect the economy there, throwing people out of jobs and so on.

Therefore we can't really afford to ignore ISIL.

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss the Cold War.

Back then, a man knew where he stood. You were either Joe Commie or Western Imperialist

Pure black and white, none of this sitting on the fence nonsense

Yeah, the threat of nuclear annihilation was there, but at least you could plan for it with your own bunker.

It's easy for you to say that Jihadin -you've got combat experience and being American, a supply of guns at hand. If ISIS walk down your street, at least you can return fire.

People like me have none of that! I'm defenceless! Damn liberals!

Only ISIL can understand what's going on. Because they just shoot everybody.

To make situation simplier we have to wait until some groups will loose. Unfortunately, there are no real "moderate rebels" survived, with whom Assad can make cease fire. Probably, Kurds will unite with him. Foreigner islamic groups will be destroyed or pushed away. Real FSA can surrender in hope of amnesty. And ISIL should be totally removed.

Not always. In Iran-Iraq war there were weird allies composition.

Iraq: USA+USSR, Singapur, Italy, Britain, France

Iran: USA+USSR (again ), North Korea, Israel (!!!)

The western powers are hampered by the need to get rid of Assad.

We do this by offering token support to groups whose long term aims and stability we really know nothing about other than they are against 'Bad Guy No1'

Is it possible to make the sole aim of 'help' in Syria the elimination of ISIS? and let the cards fall where they may regarding Syrias internal revolution?

Why do you think Afghanistan is even worse than Iraq? It looks like Afghanistan is in better shape than Iraq right now. Afghanistan has also not reached the level of violence that Iraq did during the height of coalition operations there. Now, they're probably not ready to successfully self-govern and be fully responsible for their own security, but Iraq wasn't really either, which is why they are having the problems they're having now.

Not to trivialise the crimes Islamic State commits, but the article does go on to point out that it was 200 captive Syrian soldiers - not children. Mind you, I'm sure a goodly number of those troops were quite young, however, when one mentions specifically "children", we tend to think of 12 and under.

But more to the point about just how evil & barbaric these worthless gakkers are, I'm so glad that Canadian forces are being pulled out of this fight that doesn't involve us in any way.
Yep, nothing to see here. We're definitely much better off taking the "moral high ground" and "peacekeeping" our way through this one, while helping the victims of Islamic State with winter coats and warm thoughts.

I'm seriously embarrassed by our new flower power overlord on this issue.

Who really cares which is worse, Ganners or Iraq? Both wars were linked into a larger regional conflict which overall has been the worst failure of western diplomacy since the 1930s.
