It looks really epic from the pictures and everything. Was it based on a computer game or older edition? It sounds like it's an old idea hat they're bringing back but I've never heard of it before.

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

First there was Spacehulk, it has expansions "deathwing" - which introduced the assault cannon and "genestealer" which added psionics as well as the hybrids with heavy weapons. This game had nice stealer models and rather crap looking plastic terminators (but the metal terminators could and often did replace them).

Thence came SH2.0. Better tiles, better models, the better rules of SH1.0 without half the padding. Better terminators, better sculpts of stealers and these were the boxed stealers available separately as well.

Thence came "limited edition" retro 3rd ed. Best of 1st ed (tiles and missions) with best of 2nd ed (models) with worst (ability to get a copy.). People bought up 10 copies at a time to ebay 9 of them.

Looks like 4.0 is just a 3.1. Same models and tiles. Redone missions book (probably only with a couple of newer missions).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

And a new token. Drop pods or something to indicate where you deep struck in is my guess. Forget the proper name.

$150 to buy here in Canada. Cost me $300 5 years ago.

Went in expecting to pay about $130, but he had so much good product at a great price $300 later I came home. Yeah I had to try and explain that one to the wife.

Hmm, I'm tempted but $150 makes me a bit cautious, especially when I have tons of board games already, and could easily get a PC version for single and multiplayer gameplay...

It looks like an amazing set. The models look nice, I didn't get the set last time, but is it really the same set and theme? Also, do you think the models are individual sculpt, or boxes like Stormclaw?

I'm just waiting for the complaining to start about the re-release of this. I don't know why people will complain about as they have complained for years that they stopped making Space Hulk. So no that GW is doing a re-release people will complain about that.

It's the same set. The models are snap-fit like you'd get in Dark Vengeance, but they're absolutely gorgeous and among my favorite sculpts GW's ever put out.

I'm glad it's available again for everyone who missed it the first time around. It's a great game, and the components are top notch.

I think Shark is referring to people posting rumours that this was coming, and getting responses like "naa, GeeDub wouldn't re-release Space Hulk, I've got three copies in my attic as my retirement plan!"

Anyway, there's not a "shooting phase", each model takes it's entire 'turn' in one go, using "action points" to move, shoot or melee in any order (you could shoot, move a square, turn and shoot again for example). It's a bit like Warmachine if that helps?

As for the price issue.
Honestly, if you play either SM (espeically BA) or nids, its a no-brainer.
I mean, 125$ box containing 11 amazing termies, termi libby, 22 amazing stealers and a broodlord.
22 stealers and broodlord are retail 99.75$ for the plastics/finecast, and 2 termi boxes and termi libby are retail 122.5$
Just add bases, and you made yourself almost about retail value of models for your army that looks gorgeous, even if not the very best setup available. (not even the most legal one for the BA too, as 2 of them are assault type and the rest are tactical.) if you play them both-well, jackpot.
If you don't play either, well what the heck, still worth it.

Comparing to GW's other overpriced models still results in me feeling it's overpriced

But that said, I don't think the US price is too bad even if you treat it as a stand alone game (if you don't collect BA or Tyranids), if I were still living in the US I'd probably grab it, the Australian price is a bit too insane.

I mostly want the stealers. The Terminators do look nice, but realistically I'd probably never get around to painting them, so I might as well just use SW Terminators.

Australian are not a fair point to compare anything to be honest though...
Do you have some sort of insane import tax or something? I never got the hang of the prices there, on everything.

There are valid complaints. The fact it's limited edition shows no concern for the buyer, and screws those of us without the ability to summon £75 from nowhere in 3-4 days (many people, I imagine). There's no reason for it to be limited beyond GW wanting an instant cash injection, both they and the customer would be better served by having it on constant release. It would also stop people buying it to sell on eBay for ridiculous profits.

I'm glad they're releasing it again, but as ever, they come dangerously close to doing something right and then ruin it with short sighted policies and stupid decision.

Mhm. I'm bloody annoyed about it because it was announced like 3 days after I'd ordered my FW stuff so I'm gonna miss out. Again. Like the last time.

Many companies are just dicks and charge more in Australia because reasons.

I'm sure GW based the price of the SH box off the price of the Terminators and Genestealer prices in Australia... but those prices come from a time when the exchange rate was terrible and are vastly too expensive (Genestealers are $48 for 8 and Termies $74 for 5). So the SH box costs much the same as 2 boxes of Termies and 1 box of Stealers.

The problem is the price of Termies and Stealers is out dated, so the SH boxed set is also outdated.

Most more recently releases have actually been not too badly priced in Australia, except for codices which also maintain the horribly outdated price of $83 for a hard back.

Well it took them 5 years to re-release it. If it was only 1 year, it probably wouldn't be such a problem. I think a large slab of people who will be buying it are the same people who missed out last time and didn't want to pay inflated ebay prices.

But, we'll see, if it's still on shelves in a few weeks, I'll be happy and probably buy it then (and I'll probably import it). I can't justify dropping the money on it this week and certainly not at Australian prices. If I miss it I miss it and I'll be annoyed but whatever. If I miss this one, combined with stormclaw, GW will have successfully gotten me to spend several hundred dollars elsewhere in the space of only a couple of months.

In a few years, I imagine, and with no more warning than this time around. Which ultimately lands one in the same situation.

I see it like this:

Corvus Belli put their new Infinity Starter Set, Operation Icestorm, up for preorder over a month ago, with a similar rrp to Space Hulk but with a discount available. They also included a special limited edition mini for anyone who preordered, which would not be available afterwards (note that the box itself would be). This gives me an incentive to order early for the free mini, and also time to plan spending.

GW release Space Hulk in very limited quantity with likely a few days notice before it sells out, after which it will not be available outside of eBay. There is no incentive to order beyond the guarantee of getting one, it does not open the door to anything else for them or the customer.

It's easy to see which is better from the perspective of the customer and producer, and I'd hazard a guess that, by the end of the year, Icestorm will have come close to outselling this version of Space Hulk.

It's a thinking mans game.

The marine player has to think about where to set up fire lanes and - more importantly - when to abandon them and make a hectic rush for the next intersection.

The Genestealer player has to look for the holes in the marine players plan and pick the right moment to strike.

£75 is still a large amount of cash to drop on such a game. And making it such a limited edition pleases no-one, except GW who'll be welcoming the cash injection to the business, and the collectors who 'just have to have it'. The ordinary gamer gets nothing, as usual.

Is it like other starter sets where one side is severely outclassed. Are 22 Stealers really the equivalent of 10 Termies?

The rules are very, very different there.
And its not an actual straight fight anyway, part of the stealer mechanic is spawning across the map.

The game does not play at all like 40K table top. Its not you vs them. Its the Marines have a very specific objective to do. If they get it, they win, if not, they loose. The Nid player never really wins or looses as their whole objective is to just run interference to the marine objective.

Shooting and CC are also extremely different. Unless your the termi with the lightning claws, HTH against a stealer is pretty much a lost cause. And in shooting your weapons can jam, and the heavy flamer only gets 5 shots all game, etc.

Its a very different game.
