What's your opinion on these guys? I love the looks, and the rules seem pretty good. I'm just not sure what role they would play in my army. Would they be an out flanker? Would they be a tarpit? How would I use them?

I kind of imagine them being behind a block of Skeletons or something, then flying over the skeletons for a charge. Or sweeping way out to flank stuff.

Then comes the unit size- two means no ranks for Monstrous Infantry. Yet, curiously enough, GW always shows them in pairs and never in formation. Makes me wonder if they were supposed to have the skirmisher rule. The cynical side of me says they only painted two of each type and spaced them for dramatic effect for the pictures. Need at least three in a rank, and GW conveniently sells them two in a box, so the unit will have at least four models in it. And yet, that's still not all that good for ranks, but they are Undead, have Terror, so what do the ranks matter to them? Combat resolution, but I don't see these guys losing many combats (when they fight the right units of course). I've never played against Ogres, so I'm just not sure how to use a unit of Monstrous Infantry like these guys. They are definitely not like Trolls, so the closest unit that approximates them is Ogre Ironguts maybe?

Any advice, hints, or play experience is welcomed! Thanks!

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

I like 4 of the halberd guys.

Not looked at the other choice though. The 4 halberd guys fill a similar role to mournfang.

They are skirmishers (see flying/hover rules), so you'll never get the rank bonus or take away steadfast.
I'm thinking 2 as a rare choice, or 4 as a special.
6 S6 attacks is a pretty good flanker for hard targets, while 16 S5 attacks can go into the front of something.

I wouldn't go more than 2 of the rares, because I have other things I want to spend my rare points on (2 caskets, hierotitan and 2 morghasts is 25% of your points in a 2500 point list).

Wow, I totally missed that Flyers are skirmishers. I've never had a flying unit or used one besides a single model, and I never paid much attention to my opponent's flyers. Well then! That changes a few things.

The Morghast Harbingers are Special, while the Morghast Archai are Rare. So you are saying you wouldn't go more than two of the Archai (The Halberd models)? What about the Harbingers? Have a nut? LOL

I haven't really considered what else to have in my "Undead Legion" army. I'm pretty familiar with the Vampire Counts, but the Tomb Kings? I have no idea besides watching them being played what they have or do. Still, I like the idea of the Morghasts and it sounds like they are a solid choice to take.

They get 4 S5 attacks for 80 points.
I think I'd rather have 4 S5 attacks for 46 points.
As much as I like the idea of them, I think they are a bit pricy for what they are going to do.
Then again, they aren't constructs, vampires, or large targets. That means that they do indeed heal multiple wounds per spell.
Hmmm....
Maybe a big unit on point, with mounted necromancers and a BSB riding up behind them, replenishing the losses. Kind of like a Crypt horror block, only they hit a lot harder and cost 2.5 times as much.

I guess the real question is,
Do you want them to support, or be the main show? I think they will work for both roles.

Like I said, the halberd ones fill a similar role to mournfang. Push forward into combat as early as possible. Except instead of parry, you get to bring them back to life.

Gathering the Informations.

People, in my experience, seem to focus solely on the crazy Summoning capabilities of Nagash and Arkhan--but if you take a level 4 caster with Ryze the Grave Call and really any of the other spells from "Lore of Undeath"(particularly 2 or 3) you can start getting some Raise the Dead tokens going quite easily.

3 tokens and you are able to summon up 2x Archai on a 16+ casting value.
