Subject: Help a newb out? 100pts Imperials

I'm getting in to a club X-Wing campaign this Friday. I have a whole 3 games under my belt, but I love the game and have bought a few Imperial ships.
Can I put together a decent 100pts list with the following ships so I won't get curbstomped? I see a lot of people running TIE swarms but I had trouble last time I played. I don't know whether it was just hit dice from my opponents, or me not grasping the tactics of the game, but last time I played (75pts) I had 4 TIEs spend 5 turns shooting at a single rookie X-Wing while he happily dodged 80% of the hits and used R2 to repair shields. Super frustrating. I think I'd like to play a more elite force if that is viable.
At the moment I have
2x Starter set (4 TIEs)
TIE Advanced
Phantom
Defender
I was thinking something like this might be fun (well, Echo will be fun)- but I have no idea if its good
Echo
- Outmaneuver
- Advanced Cloaking Device
- Tactician
Rexxler Brath
- Predator
- Ion Pulse Missiles
- Munitions Failsafe
Dark Curse
What more should I look at getting next to expand my options in the future?

Cheap Academy chaff is a great use of TIEs. Obsidians are also great for cheaply jumping up in PS to shoot first. Dark Curse is a fantastic flanker as well.
Your next buy should probably be a YT-1300 and/or Firespray. They give you a good bit of upgrades, plus the YT gives you a solid Rebel list to mix things up. Veteran Instincts and Engine Upgrade are very nice.
For now, try running this out.
Rexler Brath w/ Predator
Shadow Squadron Pilot w/ stygium particle accelerator, recon specialist, fire control system
2x Academy Pilots
You have some points free, but basically you have the Academies running around blocking up movement while the Phantom and Defender hunt down problem units.

Hi mate and welcome to the world of X-Wing!
I'd be looking at picking up the TIE expansion for Howlrunner. She really adds a lot of punch to a TIE formation.
Personally, I'd run the following list - Whisper and a Mini Swarm. Whisper is a little advanced, but can reap havoc when flown properly so I'd get some practice in.
Whisper - Determination, Recon Spec, Fire Control Sys, Adv Cloaking Device. (42points)
Mauler Mithel, Night Beast, 2x Obsidian Sqd (58points)
Comes in at an even 100.

- Crap Shooting, but GREAT leadership
~ 5000pt Death Skulls
FFG X-WING
FFG - Armada
Port Stephens are of NSW - PM me for a game if you're close by! |

Echo really wants Veteran Instincts if you can get it, as she needs to either move last (or as late as possible) or shoot first (or as early as possible) in almost all situations. Tactician isn't great on Phantoms either as they excel at Range 1 (for 5 dice attacks) or Range 3 (where they get 4 dice unlike everyone else, and they become even harder to hit).
As for Rexlar, Predator is enough for him. Missiles and Torpedoes are bad in this game, even with Munitions Failsafe. Basically you pay too much for one-shot weapons and someone like Rexlar is better off with normal shots anyway. Only other upgrade I would give him is Heavy Laser Cannon, but I don't think you will have one of those yet.
Based on the cards you have (not VI), I would try the list that Chumbalaya suggested above as it plays with the best of what you have got.
For further purchases I would suggest the Firespray-31 for an awesome ship as well as access to VI.

Hey guys, thanks for the help.
I played a few games the other night with:
Echo
- Advanced Cloak
- Outmaneuver
- Tactician
- Recon Specialist
Mauler Mithel
- Predator
1x Black Squadron
2x Academy
I lost my first game after accidentally boosting Echo off the board on the third turn. Oops.
Second game I won: vs Lando in Millenium Falcon + a Hawk. Echo was amazing in this game, literally running laps around the enemy while the TIEs ran in to the Falcon for most of the game.
Third game vs Han Solo + I think it was an E-wing. Lost Echo early after accidentally running her into a TIE that didn't manage to turn past the Falcon & thus got in her way. Took out the falcon eventually, but the E-Wing was still on full HP and that damn R2 unit is crazy good.
Lessons learned:
- Free actions are amazing. My first opponent was using 4 ships - I believe an X, Y, E-wing and a Hawk - and was just handing out actions between them like candy. Pretty much every ship of his had double-focus + target lock every turn. I need to get in on some of this action (pun).
- Echo really does want Veteran Instincts. Pilot Skill 6 really hurt when I never had the initiative and my opponents all had at least one ship of higher skill than me. I still can't beat Solo + VI, but I really could have used Cloak a few more times.
- TIEs are annoying. I'm not good enough yet to handle 5 ships, especially of different skill levels and all lower than the enemy. I think in most circumstances I would have been better with simply 4 Academies so I at least have the option of movement order. I ran into myself as much as I ran in to my opponent.
- I think I'm going to get a Firespray next for VI and other stuff.
