The problem is that not enough muslims condemn the extremists clearly enough, because there's tacit support for some of their attitudes if not their approach. This isn't to say many muslims supported 9/11 or the London bombings, but the perception is that practicing muslims are very conservative, culturally and religiously, are are very overt in society, they don't blend in. Most are not extremist but there are a lot that are not tolerant or appear to want to integrate with our societies. They still insist their women dress in headscarves or veils, they wish to live by sharia law. Tens of thousands of girls in the UK are at risk female genital mutilation. We don't have tens of thousands of extremists in this country, but there is a problem with Muslims maintaining socially unacceptable values. I couldn't say how many immigrants are muslims, but I believe there's also a perception, rightly or wrongly, in the public mind between immigration and muslims, there are too many stories of criminals and extremists living here on the public purse.
A few weeks ago I went to the holocaust exhibition at the Imperial War Museum in London. What struck me was that I can see the resentment and dissatisfaction with Muslims as was seen against Jews in the early 20th century. People are getting fed up with Muslims, and I think it's a serious problem. Extremist muslims are not helping their cause, they are going to make life intolerable for those muslims that are westernised and integrated. While I think extremists have to be tackled, there's a distinct risk that some people or groups are going to exploit and encourage resentment against muslims for their own ends.

It wasn't simply Malaysia that I meant...I did indeed mean Indonesia....a far larger 'country' that does have an extremely large Muslim population.....and as we have seen over the years, they do indeed have a terrorist issue due to radical Islamic terrorists.
My girl in Australia told me that a money exchange (I think that is what she said) was investigated and raided....yeah...h...they made an $18m charitable donation to Lebanon...that they just can't seem really track or trace or completely account for.
Big problem: Lebanon is a "banned" place to donate to in Australia.
Bigger problem: the sister of one of the most sought after terrorists from Australia is the owner (?) of this exchange business.
The Attorney-General is being a dodgy bastard. Any time somebody wants an organisation to have immunity to criminal liability you should recognise it for what it is: an intent to break the law.

You should have seen how the news reported that here.
"New information says Parliament house is a possible terror target"
Really? Who'd of thunk it. Thanks Channel 9 (tied for worst news broadcast with Channels 7 and 10 over here. Just....ugh)
Of course, if they'd continued to use the OLD parliament house, and not relocated it to the middle of the largest roundabout in town at the end of the MAIN HIGHWAY into town, the terry-wrists wouldn't have ever found it. (They'd have been lost on one of the other elventy million roundabouts in that confusing mess of a conurbation ). It's like they WANTED to build a TARGET with the world's largest ARROW pointing to it.

News just breaking about a man who threatened the prime minister being shot dead in Melbourne's suburbs and 2 police officers stabbed. Inb4 revenge attacks.
There certainly is news breaking to that effect. Hope the officers are all good after it, one is apparently in a critical condition while the other is relatively fine, but then everyone seems to be getting it from the same source (News Corp) so hopefully they haven't underestimated the injuries or anything.

I'd like to counter the idea that these are Muslims turning to terrorism. What the case may be closer to is terrorists using Islam as a cause to rally behind.

Ugh had to try to explain to a 15 year old why not every Muslim in Australia wants to bomb and behead us and take over the country...after more than 30 minutes I was still at 'well why don't they just go back to their country and behead themselves'. I then gave up on any future for this country, and set my sights on the moon.

I'll be honest. I'm finding that a more difficult discussion every day.
Not every Muslim is a terrorist. However, at this point in time, any terrorist that is a potential threat to me is. I'm not worried about Shining Path crossing the border and blowing up the Highland Mall.

To be fair though, your average western teenagers have grown up in a post 9/11 world where the media & governments have constantly bombarded us with foiled terror plots by Islamic extremists and/or extremists have successfully attacked westernised targets. (whether at home, or within Africa/Middle East)
If all you've heard about from news reports over the past 10 years of life you can actually remember is that terrorists = Muslims, (because the new media are too stupid to refer to them as Islamic militants/extremists/terrorists), then it's not surprising that the current crop of 10-18 somethings have a general attitude of, "F 'em all, Muslims are gakky terrorists and should all be deported."
Of course, the majority of Muslim communities are doing gak all to really help themselves... Look at freaking Calgary! It's a hotbed of radicalisation and the community either supports it by remaining willfully ignorant, (or even sliently supporting it).
A few leaders have spoken out, but overall, Muslim leaderships have grown very accustomed to playing the role of victim and decrying the west for all their woes.

I got this experience visiting family in Virginia recently. Difference was it was my 45 year old aunt. Not a 15 year old. Oddly, the 17 and 16 year old cousins seemed to grasp it just fine.

Maybe if the majority of Muslim religious authorities actually publicly condemned the actions of these extremists instead of remaining silent about it (or secretly supporting them), then the public would better understand the difference between the terrorists and the actual moderate Muslim majority.
