I dont have the Ironclad model, and am not planning to buy it, so let's keep this to regular dreadnoughts.

I was initially going for a Multi-melta + Powerfist combo (since a turn 1 automatic deepstrike would easily get me into melta range of <12" and make for an easy tank kill), but 7th edition has made one-shotting tanks harder, so whittling down HPs seems to be the way to go again. Also, because of this:

In this case, I think the Assault Cannon + Powerfist combo seems to be the better choice, given how I could deepstrike behind the tank and shoot into its rear armor. Why powerfist? Because if I deepstrike in the enemy's deployment zone I really dont want to have a S6 AP- walker caught in close combat if I were to kit it out with a Missile Launcher. Those things work better from your side of the table. Should my dreadnought survive, the powerfist would also make for a good triple attack S10 finisher when charging a tank.

I was also thinking about upgrading it to Venerable status, because BS5 instead of 4 can make all the difference in that crucial turn, and its always good to be able to make your opponent re-roll on the vehicle damage table.

What do you think?

I concur. If you are dropping a non-ironclad, the MM or AsC are your best bets. Venerable is extra points on a suicide unit, but both those guns get good milage out of BS5. And frankly, the WS might not go to waste either.

The only thing you didn’t discuss is the HF for the PF arm. Probably worth it.

I'm partial to the Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer, as you have enough shots to threaten Infantry (Crons and Tau fear this with all the AP4), DS Assault Cannons have always done well for me on Dreads and Termites. Venerable is worth it in 7th, as it gives AP2 weapons only a 1/36 chance to explode, and the extra BS/WS is nice.

Yeah Venerable goes well with the Powerfist for WS5 (hitting most things on 3s instead of 4s can make all the difference especially if you got few attacks) and a deepstruck heavy flamer will do a solid job of vaporizing anything that isnt a marine.

Question remains whether MM or Asscannon.

I think I will stick to the MM since switching to the AsC isnt free (like it should be) but comes with a ridiculous pricetag

I am partial to the AsC as it can threaten up to AV15. Sure you can't count on that, but also means the opponent has to stay concerned about it. The extra shot volume over the MM I think is more useful for dealing with both lighter armor and infantry.

In full agreement here.
Assault Cannon and heavy flamer give you a lot of flexibility for targets. Power Fist is a good backup against 2+ units or heavy armor. It's a true jack of all trades unit that can operate independently which is useful for drop pod squads.
