I'm looking for some things for my Eldar army right now, and I keep on bumping into threads where people ask for more than the RRP, or at most 20% under, which I can get new (of course).
It used to be that you could often find 40K used stuff at 50+% off but it seems some people have just gone crazy...
There are Eldar armies in the dakka swap shop that are listed for more than their RRP (or even just RRP) even though they contain horrible outdated models, incomplete options, ugly paint to be removed ...
dafuq!
Is it me or is that really a trend ?
How do you guys find good deals ?

There's still good stuff around but you will probably struggle to find a good deal on Eldar because they are the power army of the month right now. I sold my Tau at the height of their power several months ago and got a couple hundred more than I could have before their book came out, or even now after 7th was released. Watch some of those sales that are near RRP though. The longer people go without buying them, the lower the price gets
Some people are willing to pay near RRP or 20% under for an assembled army though. That's hours of work saved over new and if you didn't care much about the quality of the assembly but just that they WERE assembled it's not a big issue.
If it looks like what you want has been on the market for a while, make a counter offer. I've had some success with that. People would rather have a bit less than what they tried to ask for then nothing at all.

Yeah I'm trying counter offers
I was just shocked because last time I played Eldar they were not that good (a few months of 4th and 5th).
I guess that FoTM is a good reason, and people who don't care about the quality of the painting or assembly may indeed have different goals.

what people will ask for models should depend on the quality of the work done..
some work is an affront to man and worthy of 50% off retail.
basic work maybe 20%
but i dont know why your assuming you might get decently assembled models for half price, thats throw away money.

Well, in my opinion, new on sprue, never opened, from a store, is worth 20% off RRP.
Pre-owned, 30% off and less.
Pre-assembled, 40% and less.
Any paint, 50% and less.
Because if it's painted, I have to remove the paint.
If it's assembled, the poses are likely not the ones I want, very unlikely that the flash has been properly removed.
If it's owned, I don't have any warranty like I do with a shop.

Reasonable price reductions on average. The problem is, as you already realized, the power level / FOTM factor that increases the cost of some armies, e.g. Eldar.

OOP stuff always costs more than it did during retail. You're in luck if you find a... well... idiot who doesnt know the value of his stuff and lets it go off for cheap.
Then you have the regular stuff that is being sold on ebay. If you live in Europe or North America, why you want to bother with that when you could buy it 10%-20% off from discounters is beyond me. If you live in OZ/NZ, fair point.
Then of course you have to take the shipping cost in mind - if a person sells something from the UK, he may price it so that with shipping, it might still be a good deal for UK people. International shipping can drive the total out of whack.
And finally, if you really cannot afford it, there are auctions. These usually start for like 1 pence so you still have a chance to get it.

As always, it's simply a matter of supply and demand. Those prices get paid (GW's RRPs do not help exactly) and why the hell should someone take less money than someone else is ready to pay. I just bought some used models and paid 80% of the RRP since the offer contained almost only metal models.

Dude you have no idea how much GW stuff is oop today. Rogue Trader stuff is just a drop in the ocean in comparison to that.
Last christmas I acquired all 8 of the 9 Eldar Warlock models GW has done (currently only 5 are for sale). I also have several OOP Commissars and other cool characters that are very hard to come by but more importantly, look cool.

some people also prefer the metal model to the plastics/resin.
what it comes down to though is dont expect decent for cheap. you will get what you paid for.
if you want 50% + off id expect a turd on a plastic base.
you want 20% off assembled
you want 10% off well assembled
if you want decent paint pay the premiums.
if all you want is something to strip then wait till something totally bad comes along and see if you can get cheap. but really. if you want your 20% off buy new and do the work yourself

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Also, vintage has a certain particular value, depending on age. Take a look at this, and guess just how expensive it is.

I paid 80% of the current RRP price for plastic/finecast. However, they are metal, well assembled and well painted. I might even use them without the mandatory acetone bath.
I will of course pay that price. People want metal minis, they will pay the price and since it is oop and will probably never come again the supply will only drop in the future, so most likely the prices will rather rise and not drop.

Most likely, the next thing after finecast is going to be a lot better than both finecast and metal though.
But I agree there's value to the last metal sculpts over their finecast copies, and some people may even see value in painting / assembly or even collector items (I won't pay 60 bucks for a half assed sculpt of a bonesinger though).
And that horrible purple thing on a throne... if you're going to say more than 200 bucks, get a better one sculpted, it'll be more unique and look a lot better.

Some models are considered collectors items if they are older oop ones. Whileone person may not want them because they consider them butt ugly, another may want them even more for their rarity.
That being said, I like to put my own stuff together and paint them so will not pay higher prices. Heck, even if the stuff is painted well enough to be worthy of a higher price, I wont buy it because I would still haftastrip it to put MY armies colors on it.
Usually, if I see a high price (less then 50% off, I just get a good laugh and move on. They are right though, it is currently considered one of the "powergamer" armies so prices will be jacked up a lil bit because of competition.

It always depends on the situation. Recently I managed to get my hands on a Grey Knights army with metal paladins, Terminators and a lot of PAGK for less than 50% of the current price. All of them well assembled and not even primed. Now that was a real bargain.

People are silly on both sides of the fence. Unless it's a beautifully painted model, professionally assembled and burns the eyes because of it's gloriousness, it's not worth RRP or even 20% off RRP unless you just can't be arsed to build and paint your own model.
You can get 20% or more off RRP on new, in the box models from reputable online retailers, I certainly wouldn't throw my money at some faceless person on a forum.

Yep, ebay is full of these 'professional sellers'.
I took a look recently at second hand leman russ tanks and there were pages and pages of overpriced 'little timmy's project' s all with little raffle ticket numbers next to them in terrible condition, layers of awful paint and bits missing or misapplied. All for little under retail when they're worth far less than half price.

I love a lot of the OOP models. The only reason I don't use them in my project is that I can't bring myself to chop up my old metal models. I literally have a good 50-60 old 2nd Edition era metal Marines just sitting forever confined to a box, and another 200 or so metal Guardsmen.
The plastic ones seem so disposable by comparison.

How do you guys find good deals ?
It's a general trend with everything, not a particular trend right now (though, as others have mentioned, it is perhaps a particular with eldar at the moment). Everybody always tries to sell things at the highest price they think they can get away with (based on other factors). It only makes sense, of course. Otherwise, you're just leaving money on the table.
However, the price of something isn't what the seller says it is, and it never has been. The price of something is determined by the buyer. Anything is worth what it's purchaser will pay. As such, people "selling" stuff at silly prices aren't actually selling them at those prices unless they're actually SELLING them at those prices. Listing is not selling.
As for how to find good deals, it's a combination of finding an active market, and lots of time. Going to eBay and looking for something you want to buy right now will always bias the price in favor of the seller. Perusing eBay for months waiting to find a desperate seller who is willing to off-load something cheap that you might want to have, on the other, is what gets you great deals.
What I do is go to eBay, do a search for "warhammer 40k", filter by "auction" and "0-1 bid", and then sort by "ending soonest". Then swing by and check it out once or twice a day. If there's something you are interested in, swing by again like a half an hour before the auction is done and see if anyone's bid on it. If not, you just might be able to get it for the list price, which isn't ALWAYS insane (and those that are (most of them) you just ignore). If you do this then eventually, very eventually, you'll come across those diamonds in the rough.
But it's much more like panning for gold, and much less like doing to a store and buying something.

You have to surf the crap on ebay and wait for the good deals. I got two rare necromunda Escher models for £4.50 a piece last week when most sellers are asking for £18.99 each!!
I saw a box of mordhiem go for £30!

People can put stuff up for whatever.
some of its good deals, some of its bad.
It has been rare for many years to be able to purchase used GW models for less than 40% off retail, often 20-30% of retail is norm.
and yes some "vintage" stuff are considered collectors items and sell for quite a bit.
Some people are even selling/buying empty boxes for close to the cost of the actual full box because cover art or some such, or just they didn't read the listing.

That reminds me of a story (or possibly urban legend) of an ebay sale for " PS/2 box" and not " PS/2, box" which mean vastly different things lol.
