Those blister packs bring back a lot of memories - although the ones I bought were the SM-branded Rogue Trader ones

@Ratius: It's great seeing some old Hero Quest stuff, I played that so much back in the day. I want to play again honestly. Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane, I should post some hero quest stuff too.

Guess it's time for me to make my semi regular trip to my parents house to dig around in the vain hope that they still have the hero quest board hidden away somewhere.

Not quite Friday, but as Adeptus Titanicus/Epic has now been re-released, I feel this is appropriate:

I liked it better than the Blockytech 3rd gen (?) on the right though.

And don't even think about mentioning the Phantom re-design that came out around the same time - oh no - too late!!!

I love that little fluff snippet/short story. Reminds me I need to put a BA decal on one of my terminators to honor the time the armor spent loaned to the angels.

Whats the story on this?

When the first metal models of Terminator Armour in the current style were released in 1989, there was a White Dwarf article about them. One of the pieces of flavour text was about a Blood Angels Terminator squad preparing for a teleport. There was the Chaplain blessing their armour with rare oils, the new guy volunteering to be point man, the trooper who habitually tested the suit's autosenses by sighting his gun on the Chapter badge on the wall (apparently the Chaplain thinks that is a little sacreligious, but lets it go), the mention of the "clattering" of the armour as one Marine shrugged inside it and the suit tried to replicate the movement, and the fact that one Marine was in a suit borrowed from the Ultramarines a century ago. Every time it was repainted red, apparently, the wearer died - the current wearer was convinced the suit knew it was only on loan, and so left it in its increasingly battered original colours. Contrary to how this gets spun nowadays as an example of widespread techno-superstition, the story points out that the Chapter techs didn't agree with this interpretation.

The text is in WD 112 if you're curious.

Good times, back before marines were made out to be so perfect. Marines wore fatigues, and much more. More believable "marines". Hell the drank in bars and sundry. Less monastic more kick-ass-tic.

I too had the BA (ORANGE!) Marines and the old first run lead termies painted up with the banged up ultramarines suit. I thought everyone pulled that shtick.

Between 2009 and 2014, I've got three sets of Space Hulk. One set has been painted up "stock", one set has been converted into the characters from the 1st ed SH "Deathwing" supplement, and a third has been converted into those guys.

That landing pad was in almost every 40K battle report (I'm sure others fondly remember the 12-20 "key" terrain bits you saw in every 40K battle report. They had some really wonderful hand-made terrain back then.

I do wish I had some classic stuff like that.

I wonder what happens to the studio armies/models once they are OOP and dont appear in WD etc anymore? Are they all in a vault at GW HQ or are they in private collections? Ive never seen an 'eavy metal painted model in anyones collection.

That big bastion in the 2nd picture (@Meatybits) caused my local GW (at the time) no end of trouble.

It's not a GW piece - you couldn't get it in GW stores - but guard players kept asking about it. It wasn't even made "under licence" - although they DID make a couple of hardfoam terrain pieces for them later in the 90s).

I told the local manager where you could get it from, and he just stared daggers at me then laughed because I put him in a position where he now knew but couldn't tell anyone who came into the store and asked about it (because they weren't supposed to recommend stuff from other companies).

That bastion was awesome in it's day. LOL.

I really do wonder where all the old display models go to die/hide/stuffed in a closet somewhere...

That being said GW has done the Ultrasmurfs Chapter several times over, at least three IIRC. Once in the 1st Edition/RT era, once in the...3rd???, and once in the5/6th era.. I think. It's getting harder to remember these days. But each time they got quite a spread in whatever White Dwarf was out for that month. In fact, if timing is anything they are due for another go at it to show off their silly Primaris and the new "legion" scale... would be interesting.

That bastion (or a copy of it) is available from Ziterdes still, in hard pressed foam:

It's not so much a copy of it, as the new version of it. They replaced the old one in the catalog over a decade ago.
Ziterdes made the original one in that picture, too.

A local (to that GW store I used to frequent) carried Ziterdes' stuff and had that particular bastion in stock. Hardfoam, pre-flocked and painted. They had it in the model railway terrain area (it was literally a block away from the GW store).

It's still in Forge World's offices, apparently - Andy Hoare shared a photo of some of his Emperor's Children on it the other day.

A lot of the early stuff from the 80s and early 90s is now in the collection of Bryan Ansell at Wargames Foundry - a lot of the old Adeptus Titanicus models, the old Genestealer Cult models and limos, a lot of the models from the Realm of Chaos books, etc. I've seen the blog online of some guy who now owns the original Warp Runners titans that appeared in White Dwarf when 1st edition Adeptus Titanicus was on the go. Andy Chambers apparently still has his huge Skaven army, I expect Mike McVey still has his Wood Elves in a box somewhere.
