Not that I recall; that was only in one of the stories in the codex. Anyway, characters weren’t as overwhelmingly powerful in melee in 2nd edition - a termagant brood could tie him up.

Not that I’m ruling out me being crap at 40k.

Yeah, I was just referring to that one stupid story. I don't think I ever won a game of 2nd ed 40k either. Actually once we'd all set up our 2000pt armies and played one turn each it was time to pack up and go home or we'd get locked in school over the weekend.

2nd Ed always gave us a lot of funny moments. We always said that characters could crew vehicles that had lost their crew. This led to one game where Marneus Calgar and Commissar Yarrick would both take the same Rhino, run the other over, get out, and then it would repeat. They fought their own little war whilst the Ultras and Guard fought theirs.

The 'Stealer Cult could get Land Raiders. Genestealers rocking around in a Land Raider is just terrifying.

Don't forget the Harlequin Land Raiders.

Every game in 2nd Ed felt like Apocalypse, especially the Melee phase, that took hours.

I think the 'Battle for Macragge' story in that 'Nid Codex is possibly the best they ever did and would love a film version. It's the best version too, much better than when they shoe horn in the Swarmlord later.

Lets stay with Nids for one more week so.
I'll get up another codex next week.

These were really vicious if they went off

Nids used to used to have different targetting rules which gave them a nice individual feel

This and the Avatar pic from the Eldar codex were by far my favourite 2nd artwork. Stunning.

Happy Friday!

No such thing in 2nd edition. Now, you could have an Eldar army with a single Space Marine Land Raider as an ally, but that's not quite the same. Also, the Land Raider was pretty much unavailable throughout the lifetime of 2nd edition, until the current model was released in 3rd edition.

Yeah, but Rhinos cost one tenth the cost, so using them ablatively (the 'stealers never went in the Rhino; they ran along in a clump hiding behind it; they could keep up with it moving at combat speed) didn't break the bank. Also, as I said, Land Raiders were hard to find. The only person in my group who had any was me, and I had three. Still got one; it's had a varied career, firstly as a tool of a Harlequins troupe, then resuced and put into service by the Space Wolves, and currently wearing the livery of the Crimson Fists.

I remember Ragnar fighting a Farseer in melee for a couple of rounds, until someone lobbed a vortex grenade at them. The Farseer got sucked into the warp. Ragnar managed to use his special ability to dodge, and escaped.

I miss the days of Space Wolves just being flat-out better than everyone else's Marines, with every one of them having WS 5 (and the Wolf Guard being WS 6).

Because back then Harlequins looted vehicles like Orks. The major rule was that it had to have the appropriate Harlequin paintjob.

I know. I was there. None of that was in 2nd edition, though, which was the context. Although my mate's Eldar did have s squad of Catachan Jungle Fighters in a Chimera as allies, because he liked the look of them.

The other major rules component was that the Harlequins didn't bother repairing them, so they might break down every turn.

One of these days I need to convince my buddy to play a game using Rogue Trader (humble brag: mine is signed by Mr. Priestly!) and the compendium. Turn Radius Ratios!!

That Tyranid event table really made the game interesting. It sucked to play against because nobody else had a similar ability, but it was definitely cool for a narrative aspect.

The table was there to off-set the fact that Tyranids couldn't use Strategy Cards, as most of them just didn't make sense from a fluff perspective.

Yes, but they ended up way better than strategy cards.

We drew Orks dis week. Waaaaaagh!

Always loved this codex cover - the yellowy/orange look to it

Who will win these ones?!

Ah the Pulsa. I used to use a battery of these in games. A genuinely broken weapon, you could effectively cripple your opponents whole army with a few lucky roles - damage/cripple walkers, have enemy infantry basically forfeit a turn etc

Most of the grots I use today are the old 2nd ed plastics #1994

The 2nd edition codices were the best books every produced by GW (as well as the army books for Fantasy of that time). The highwater mark of their writing and story/etc. Really solid books. It's the only line of codices I own. If anyone adores their army and there is a 2nd edition book, you owe it to yourself to source it.

Unfortunately, the Ultramarine one is one I’m missing. I mostly missed 2nd, only caught the tail end.

Got a bunch of others though.

Proper gretchin.

Comedy power rangers paint scheme.

Not forgetting the green and white Rangers, and a couple of putty-men.

In fact I've got a great whack of these old fellas.

And here's my boyz in da field.

Honestly though I never played orks in 2nd ed. (I played Harlequins and then Space wolves) I actually only got orks to bulk my GorkaMorka collection into a playable army.

But I wholeheartedly agree that the 2nd ed Orks codex is super great and I got me a copy when ingot back into gaming maybe 2006 or so, think we were in 6th ed. I got it just to use as a reference book and to enjoy the fluff and the artwork. Which is all propa orky! It's definitely 2nd ed. that inspires my story writing for orks and grots more than any other era.

That's really gonna narrow down your LOS for shots from the side.

It's be funny to have an orky house rule. The first shot that hits the dread has to test to see if its a cardboard cut out decoy. If so the real dread appears out of a building (a cardboard decoy building presumably) of the ork player's choosing. Ruthlessly cunning orky tactics.

For the Wolftime!

A classic fight between Nids and Wolves. Great scenery too.

I had completely forgotten this codex contained an actual battle report
Ghaz's Orks have to steal some plans from a wrecked Predator whilst Ragnars Wolves defend it. Epic stuff.

Super artwork

Ah who didnt love these little guys

Happy Friday peeps!

A friend of mine loved to deploy 20 wolf guard in termie armor all with Cyclone missile launchers. They fired all their missiles first turn to make an impossibly huge blast radius that would pretty much wipe out any non-power armored army turn 1.
