So I saw the SM HQ choice on the GW website called the "Space Marine Commander". I'm looking for a chapter master, but there is no chapter master on the website, I am wondering, are the Commander and the Chapter Master the same and if not, where can I get a CM.

If you're looking for a generic chapter master model the space marine commander is what they put out to sort of fill that in the model line. Really, as long as its wysiwyg you should be able to build your chapter master model however you please.

It can be used to build any single character model from Sergeants to Chapter Masters and Librarians. The only thing it can't really build is a Chaplain or Techmarine. It comes with a Power Fist, Lightning Claw, Power Sword or Chainsword (with a nice bionic arm) in the left, and a Bolt Pistol, Plasma Pistol, Combi-Plasma, Combi-Melta or ornate bolter in the right hand.

I ran into this same exact problem when I first started a few months ago. The Space Marine Commander is used to make the custom Space Marine Captain or a Chapter Master. So if you are looking at making a Chapter Master, look no further. I used one to make my Captain (I play CF, so Pedro Kantor is the model I have for the Chapter Master). Pretty nice model, though I used some bits from the Command Squad to give him a more unique appearance though (I kinda wish I had opted to use the Commander chest piece and some Sternguard legs instead though).

EDIT: You know what? I think I might do just that. I think I am going to rip the Company Champion chest piece off of my Commander (and the head as well) and put the Commander Chest on and a different head on. The helmeted head out of the Command box has a targeter on the left eye, despite that being the side that the close combat weapons are on.

Marines are great because pretty much any mini can be a trooper/sarge/veteran/captain/chapter master with just a few extra bits glued on to move you up the chart. It’s what you have written on the army list that counts. There is a huge amount of wiggle room on the modeling side to put together your force. As almost all the bits are compatible, put together the best looking guy you can and run with it.

There has also been a large amount of “bling creep” over at GW in the last few decades. Look at the commander box, and then the sternguard box. If you didn’t know which rank was which, who do you think would be higher on the pecking order? The new veteran boxes are encrusted with sparkly details and honors.

Well, I got the new chest and tabard on my Captain. Unfortunately, his old head stayed with his old chest (long story). I was not a huge fan of it anyway. I am looting for a new head now. Got any recommendations for a Crimson Fists Captain? I am leaning toward a Sternguard head with laurels. I kinda want something to set him apart from Pedro though, since they both have the Roman-style tabbard and officer cords. I kinda thought maybe the blister packed Captain's helmeted head, since it has that rad broom top on it, but it really doesn't fit with my army's appearance.

I'd also add that it's an amazing kit that can make just about anything. One of my favorite kits ever!

Just buy a command squad. Still price gouged to the max, but better than Commander.

The Commander is $22. Still, you can definitely make a pretty good Commander from the Tactical Squad, Command Squad, or the Sternguard Veterans. The draw of the Commander is that it comes with a number of hard to get weapon options, like the combi-plasma or combi-melta. Additionally, the cape and chest piece are really top notch. The only reason to get the Space Marine Captain (the model I think you are referencing) is to get a model with a combi-grav. The fact that it is fixed with next to no ability to customize is irritating and counter to the design philosophy of the rest of the Space Marines.

The $30 monopose blisters are a little insulting. I don’t think any other army pays the same price for an equivalent mini. Frankly, any of the new vets is would do a fine job, for a much lower price per model.

While I like the commander box, and there are a ton of good bits in there, it’s rather dated at this point. If one falls into your lap, like bundled with the strikeforce, get some use out of it. But if I was recommending purchases, I’d go with the vet boxes and just put something cool looking together.

Between the Sternguard and Vanguard boxes, I believe you have all those weapon options covered.
