I don't have any kind of access to HH rulebooks so I'm curious: given that most of the armies are marine legions, how different are they in play? Does it fel like mirror matches?

Typically the troops is the same (Tac squad, maybe support/assault/breacher)

After that though you can go into legion rapiers, jetbike squads, destroyer squads with their fancy weapons, unique units per legion varied mechanicum allies, contemptor/dreadnought taken in 1-3 units, assault etc.

And then you've got the Praetors with their various doctrines, sometimes you'll see full Land Raider fitted units, aerial, mechhammer, horde, Predator squadrons..

Can get pretty fun with the customization, Typically legions add their own flavor that makes you want to select certain units, but otherwise you can go nuts.

I think he meant compared to each other, not compared to 40k marines.

Basically its about as mirror matched as a 40k game consisting only codex marines, blood angels, space wolves and dark angels.
The core of all armies (other than admech) is identical, but the special units define each other a bit.
It wont be as diverse as the 40kverse, but its decent.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

True, and we are now getting solar auxalii as well, so getting some GEQ included now.

baring you don't bring a Primarch, you could even field a 30k army against any 40k and it would be a good match.

There's more variation than you'll find between Chapter Tactics in Codex: Space Marines, and some of the legion-specific special rules and units are really cool. It's not quite as diverse as say, Orks vs. Eldar, but they're still different.

It's actually quite a bit of diversity considering it's Marine on Marine gameplay.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.
1500 pts
