Skink Armed with a Blowpipe

A friend of mine (who hadn't played in a while) and I were playing a friendly game last night when a rules question came up when his unit of 3 Minotaurs (w/ champ) and 1 Doombull slammed into my unit of Saurus Warriors and Oldblood on Cold One.
Below is a graphic depicting the scenario.
The question came up when I EVENTUALLY got to strike back. Attacked with the viable models in the right wing against the Doombull, failed to wound. When attacking with my left wing, I directed all of the attacks I could at the unit dealing six wounds. His thought was that since my models could only hit the champion, he was the only one that would be wounded, saving the regular cows in the back to fill in the slot. My thought was that since he's part of the unit, and not a character, the wounds hit the ones in the back first (killing both). Which would be correct?
**I realized later that he didn't have the unit ranked up properly anyway. Don't care, I beat the unit eventually. May have been faster with six more models able to hit, but, oh well.**

He's right. You have to target the unit as the champ has a different statline. Same for the doombull.
You can do 3 wounds to the unit, or however-many-the-doombull-has to the doombull.
However, you're capped at that.

You must hit the champion first, as he is different to the unit.

That's how it works, that's why Bretonnian Lances with two characters and a champion in the front rank are quite effective. You can inflict ten thousand wounds, but only ever kill those three characters.

Had the unit been formed correctly, what would my options have been then? Would my wounds directed at the unit then hit the regular cows first then? Or would I then have to direct some at the unit, some at the champion, and then some at the doombull then?

MOdels only iin btb with the champion, like those only in btb with the Doombull, MUST allocate their attacks to the champion.

Gotcha. I don't play against much MI so it's rare that my infantry is secluded to just one model.
Thanks for all the help, everyone.

If your Old Blood can kill the Minotaur unit champ at initiative 3, then at initiative 1, the saurus will be touching rank and file minotaur and will swing on the unit.

I usually play my oldblood with great weapon so he's not knocking anything off first. I have been thinking about changing his gear around to something else, but it just hits SO hard!

Just wanted to point out, there is nothing wrong the way his unit is formed. You are allowed to have any frontage you want, it's just that he isn't getting any Rank Bonus to his Combat Resolution score.

In that case the unit could kill the champion, and the Oldblood could go after the unit.

But since minotaurs can only pursue d6 inches anyways you're actually better off NOT breaking the enemy and just grinding them into nothingness.
