I was thinking of bringing this idea up with my game group; the point cost to upgrade a veteran unit with bikes. The veterans are already highly customizable, so I thought what's one more thing? Get rid of rough riders all together and give the option to veterans. Or would that make them to over powered? Perhaps just paying to upgrade the rough riders too veterans would be better.
Mainly as a house rule, and for friendly games, but what do you guys think a Bike upgrade would cost a veteran guardsman unit? Or, upgrading Rough Riders to veteran stats?

I wouldn't mind facing off against some biker vets. 14ppm, become bike infantry with +1 bump to toughness and a 4+sv. Twin-linked heavy stubbers as the bike's primary weapon with the option to swap it for melta/plasma guns, flamers and grenade launchers. Riders have laspistols/CCW stock. That's kind of boring and "standard", though. There should be something to "Guard" it up.

14ppm sounds about right. +8pts (SM bike is +7 but doesn't increase armour save). Automatically Appended Next Post: Only 2 spec upgrades though! Automatically Appended Next Post: Its already specialized for guard as they can take orders.

Just thinking about it makes me want to put all my HQs on bikes now...
I didn't think about the heavy stubber though, man that's going to be allot of dakka! Sure as hell nothing to sneeze at when you see a vet squad with 10 H.Stubbers, 3 meltaguns, a demo charge, and meltabombs coming at you!

it should be instead of the other upgrades to vets not as well as. otherwise 10 meltabomb bikers + demo charge would be broken. also shouldn't get ccw + pistol. Automatically Appended Next Post: and remember - if you are shooting a spec you cant shoot the bikes weapons.
so it would be 7 heavy stubbers + 3 melta guns. Automatically Appended Next Post: also probably better that the hs aren't tl at 14ppm.

Well, you could have them still carry vox-casters to reroll orders, or maybe have a Commissar be able to join them in his own bike. Or, if you have the modding skills for it, give one of the bikes a little sidecar and allow them to create a Heavy Weapon Biker Team.

Yeah, I'd have to agree on the non-twin linked Heavy stubber, because that's 30 shots right there. However, I think maybe a range or AP decrease should be on top. That's 30 str 4 ap 6 shots at BS 4 with a good 3' range!
All for just 14ppm, that and given their enhanced Toughness and speed and armor(?) costs more then a stock 10man Devastator unit. I'm not that great at point balancing, but that seems a bit much?
Maybe not, but it's something that bothers me a little.

Yea, BS4 heavy stubbers is too good for 14 points. Heavy bolter HWT cost 25 points without BS4 or T4 or relentless or 12" move. I'd keep them closer to vets in function and options. Maybe give them a grenade launcher for their base weapon? Keep the above changes but price them at 15 ppm. That way it's 6 points for the vet + 5 for the gun + 4 for the bike. Let them take doctrines, 3 special weapons options, maybe swap out guns for power mauls at not cost.
This way they're more of a fast moving close assault/anti vehicle/swt unit, and less of a godly HWT replacement.

What about a twin-linked autogun for the bike mounted weapon?

Well that was my thought. Space Marines have bolters, and their bikes have twin-linked bolters. Why should an IG bike get a Heavy Stubber? It would make sense for an IG Attack Bike, perhaps.
Twin-linked S3 AP- would be a bit... meh though, wouldn't it? Theoretically, the bike could provide the power and support for a larger capacity las-weapon, however, so what about Twin-linked Hellguns?
