"Samus. That's the only name you'll hear. Samus. It means the end and the death. Samus. I am Samus. Samus is all around you. Samus is the man beside you. Samus will gnaw on your bones. Look out! Samus is here."
Samus was pretty scary in the HH series, Especially considering he pops up later as well.

Narrator blathers too much and his voice is vaguely uninspiring, sorry.

every time I hear samus I think of the WWE wrestler of the same name.
I have to say the DE are pretty scary, but maybe the Orks are in the Force of Nature kind of thing. no motives no ideals no goals besides "imma gonna wreck u" and they can't be stopped by an unprepared world. plus they eat and enslave the people left over.

If it ain't a Daemon or Nid or C'tan it shouldn't be on any Monster list.
Daemons because they are immortal, supernatural embodiments of human emotions, that can do all sorts of wierd and wonderful (not really) things.
Nids can evolve all sorts of horrible ways to kill you. Lictors will feast on your brains while you still live. Parasite as mentioned. The doom will suck your life force away. And the Hive Mind always has a billion more just like it.
And C'tan (in their prime in the Oldcron rules) because they literally reshape the universe on a whim and can devour stars.
A big green gorilla will just smash you. The Avatar will just incinerate you. Deldar are pretty terrifying but they torture you and give you a chance to fight back. Tau...c'mon now.
And Imperial Knights? Those Warlord Titans aren't afraid of puny knights. The Warlord Titan steps on the Knight as easily as it steps on you.

What about some of the stuff that lives out in the Halo Stars?
Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

What? There is far too little fluff to say they are scarier than a Daemom. A fething Daemon. From literal Hell.
The only one I can agree that should be on there is the Hrud as the guy described it, and only for base humans or other short-lived creatures like Tau. A Space Marine aging 2 decades is nothing. An Ork would be unchanged. An Eldar wouldn't even notice. The Necrons wouldn't notice. The Tau and humans and possibly the Nids would, but Nids rarely live past a battle anyway so its not big deal, and there are still bodies to eat.

I never said they were scarier than demons, no idea where you picked that up from. Demons I wholeheartedly agree should be #1. I just think some of the things in the halo stars could have made this top ten list as some have a decent amount of fluff (Slaugth for example).
Chill out.

Honestly, Hrud are more terrifying then even daemons. Unlike daemons, they aren't somewhat constrained as to where they go, and Hrud can both turn invulnerable/teleport. Hell Hrud can even blow up planets by aging the core to death.

I hope you guys read that part about Samus in the novels, The creature he turned that Marine into sounds seriously scary.

zombiekilla - you mean the Psychneuein that got name-dropped badly in the 6th edition rulebook?
But yeah, Hrud have by far eclipsed the other cosmic horrors as the 'scariest monster in 40k' as of a recent BL publication.

Are there any good novels out there with Hrud in them?

Not really. The one I'm reading that features them at the moment is a part 3 and really disappointing, especially compared to the other two. It reads like a catalogue of name-drops to other products (so far mentioned, at least: Creed, Fortis Binary, Damocles, Sicarius, Stonetooth Harker, and I've lost count of the number of times the monsters have been referred to as 'akin to tyrannoforms'), completely ignores twenty years of Eldar fluff (It has a Striking Scorpion exarch in sexy boob armour! Explicitly so!) and generally is not well written.
I'm referring to
Spoiler:
Gods of Mars
.

Wait, are you trying to pull a prank on me? I googled the name you gave me and what I got was pics of half-naked Fabians and harem girls, which is interesting to say the least, but not quit what I was expecting.

But what Miko speaks of is that Hrud have been promoted to a point that they re now an entire species of distilled Nyarlathoteps that will utterly demolish anything should you anger them and you can't do anything about it.

The Hrud made Dantioch the cranky old man he is, Do they still have that effect in large numbers?

In large numbers they're capable of unmaking the entire universe.

In small numbers they instantly kill guardsmen that get too close to them. In large numbers they'll age anything to death, save possibly Necrons as Necrodermis doesn't seem to have a half life. Or if it does, it's incredibly long.
Plus then there's the problem of killing Hrud, to the point it's even debatable if you actually managed to kill one or maybe that was just an avatar behind whatever abomination they truly are (I'm guessing warp).

According to Gods of Mars, Hrud are pan-dimensional beings that move freely in and out of reality.
Basically, they're H2G2 rejects.

Also their Writhing tentacle thingies appearance is a lot more terrifying than that stupid Skavenesque look, Skaven are boring.

There is something far more scary... The stuff of true nightmares that cause Daemons to cry at night.
The Shokk Attack Gun!
Nothing compares to a crazed Snotling materialising inside your body, driven insane, clawing and defecating inside your chest as it digs it's way out. Like the scene from Alien, but much much worse.

They probably should. Creatures that once enslaved the entire galaxy are scary. They retreated into the Warp when defeated, and daemons cross the street rather than meet them...
