It's been 2 years since the first book came out (spoilers: nothing happens) and there was a rumor that Abnett is able to make a lot more money on Guardians of the Galaxy then with 40k stuff, so is this dead, or just sleeping?

Funny, I only finished re-reading "Pariah" this afternoon, and was wondering about the future of "Penitent"...
I mean, the cover art was finalised and everything...

They have Abnett tasked with working on HH until next year some time, afaik.
This in addition to his work with Marvel, which does, indeed, pay lots more than GW does.

Also, Warmaster (Gaunts Ghosts). The release date has changed like 3 times. It also has cover art finalized...

Final cover art really doesn't mean anything, esp since 99% of GW books only require "draw (insert army here) looking bad ass with fire and explosions and stuff".
Still it's better than the old days when they just used inventory art which might or might not vaguely resemble what's going on inside.

And this is why I prefer to wait until a series is fully published before starting the first book.
My worst experience with something like this was reading the first book of the dark tower series by Stephen king. It took that punk about 22 years to finish the whole thing: and I was completely disappointed in the ending.
apparently, even years later I'm still bitter.

I gave up after the first decade or so. Looked up the ending on Wikipedia a while back. Fortunately nothing happened in book 1 of R vs E so I'm not on the edge of my seat

Plenty happened in Pariah. :p Just the important thing was setting the scene.
Heh. Maybe Penitent will be a setting book for Dark Heresy.

Pfft its a youngen yet! Now talk about a long wait Dance with Dragons was out in 2011 and its now 2020 and still no release date on the next Game of Thrones
Though I seem to recall Dan was in a video thing with GW this year and something was mentioned about him working on something in the Inquisition series; but I don't remember any specific details.

GRRM already got his "movie" deal. no reason to complete the series.

No rumour about it.
Marvel (DC used to as well) does pay better than GW for writing. Even if they did poach most of their good writers from the UK back in the 70s and 80s.

Plus IIRC Marvel and DC writers get pseudo royalties when their material is used in TV, film or toys.

To be fair Marvel and DC have far bigger audiences than Black Library - even within gamers markets not everyone reads the BL stuff. Which is a shame, I certainly missed out on a lot of stuff years ago.
I always feel GW could somehow do more for the BL with more cross-over content. I enjoyed seeing then put things like the new Soul Wars book into the starter set for AoS and such. Things like that should happen more often. Perhaps they could put a code into every Getting Started set for a free short story or two ebook download for the faction .
Little things like that to entice people into reading more BL stories and novels.

I'd be interested in seeing real numbers. Most DC/Marvel comics sell in the 20k range each month, with 100k considered a huge hit. But these days there's also digital and TPB sales which we don't have the same visibility on.
Some BL books have been NYT best sellers but I don't have any real numbers. IIRC 10-20k is kind of the floor for a profitable paperback.

I'd expect high regional variation - eg comics are much bigger in the USA than the UK; but at the same time the USA is many many times the size of the UK so that swings things in favour of comics.
