In the fluff it says that mortarions adoptive father built his fortress at the highest peak, beyond where Mortarion himself could go. But how did he do that? How could he survive where the superhuman primarch could not?

I think one book even implied they might have been Dark Eldar.
Though I'm sure by now that that's been retconned and his father is some Tyranid hybrid or something.

It's not Necrons and it's not Dark Eldar. It's a different race entirely.

Mortarion's "Father" was an alien of an unknown (now) species. There are quite a few alien races around at the time of the great crusade that aren't there anymore, largely because great crusade.

I haven't read it yet but more on Mortarion's origins are revealed in the short story Daemonology
http://www.blacklibrary.com/horus-heresy/daemonology-ebook.html
I'm pretty certain that whatever he was, he had some form of connection to Nurgleth or the Pantheon.
Edit: OK, I bought it and read it and it didn't have any real reveal about his past. Which was a bit of a let down. Cool, but not worth the money.

I thought Mortarion's 'father' was a necromancer? Maybe he relies on chaos blessing/ warp power?

Yeah I think he is a necromancer. Him and the other warlords fought with undead armies anyhow.

He was some sort of alien. The mountains where he and his kind lived were so caustic that rebreathers and masks corrode. It was as much acid as poison.
IT would be really cool to see what he is, but if they put it in a book it would just ruin it so probably best we hope they ignore it.

Well, Typhus is reputedly a hybrid between whatever The Thing Upstairs was and a human, and could pass for human to a sufficient degree to be turned into a Space Marine. So, I'd assume that they looked human-ish.

I don't think it is ever specified he is like 50/50. He has some of that race in him though.
