I wander what experience you guys had with playing tyranid in Maelstorm missions.
What units work, are there any gold?
From what I know, you need mobile units to go round the board and grab objectives, but fast tyranid units are not as fast as bikes and are either very fragile (Shrikes) or require Synapse babisistters to go along (gargoiles).
We are having 1000pt turnoument in a few days, and I wander what list to bring...
So far I am thinking about
2 dakka flyrants (damage dealers)
Tervigon + 30 gaunts + venomtrope (home objective sitter)
...
That leaves 155pts to spend
PS
Sadly I have no Tyranocites or forge world stuff

Rippers, Mawlocs and lictors for grabbing objectives.
Flyrants for late objective grabs.
with the remaining 155 i would go for either a Mawloc or a Hive Crone.

Haha Wilson I love how this has changed with the success of Sean's list. A few days ago, pretty much everyone would have said "don't take lictors they're garbage". Now, I can't help but wonder what we've been missing out on

Lictors are too stronk
Rippers are a good shout. I'd also argue tag's suggestion and use Hormagaunts/Gargoyles, pretty nifty for when you need to claim an objective.

Hormagaunts being babysat by a Zoanthrope isn't a bad play. Start with the zoa covered by two Gaunts or so, move and run, now it's covered by five or six, move and run, covered by the whole brood, and keep going out to that 12" max, 18" + Dominion. Consider it a compromise between speed and need and puts more bodies on the ground.

I wouldnt take the tervigon considering its a 200 point model that theoretically will spawn 21 gaunts and then becomes a fire magnet/liability. Id take a few more stabby gaunt squads (MSU, or maxed squads it doesnt matter, just that MSU will have more units to sit on objectives). Then use the remaining points to go for some long ranged nid fire power (if they have any, which I have no clue about). That or just use the new nid drop pod equivalents. You could go for the skyblight formation with minimum gargoyle squads and then have another flytant with 2 gaunt squads in a CAD on the side but thats easily past 1000 points so you could just stick with the skyblight formation. Also whats with doing maelstorm at 1000 points?

The maelstrom missions also you should consider taking objectives from opponents. Big Threats and disruptions help with that.
I unfortunately only have 1 maelstrom game under my belt by my best units were termagaunts, venomthrope, flyrant, dakkafexes and a trygon prime. I played against a space wolf force than had bjorn and a mix of cc and heavy weapon wolves and drop pods. I ended up tieing at 9pts each. I think I probably could have won had I worked to gain a few more objective earlier in the game.

haha yeah I can see how that looks, I was more going on the basis of the new additions to Nids though i.e Tyrannocytes and how you can just have so much stuff up in the enemies DZ.

Yeah, most of the time you want min troops squads for nids. Not a Tervigon and max gant squad. Too many points for no real improvement.
For Maelstrom, I'd definitely look at min squads of hormagaunts or rippers with deep strike. It'll net you many more points while costing less and being less of a liability.
At a 1000 point game I'd be tempted to not take two Flyrants but they're just too dang good. I wouldn't even lose the eGrubs. It's 20 more points but that's a pittance for the ability to take on the odd Land Raider list or other AV13/14 vehicles out there.
Next I would look at Mawlocs. Pretty dang points efficient for a 1000 points list. One is good, but twin-linked is better
Dakkafexes make a good sub for Mawlocs. They bring the pain and are a little more reliable but not quite as efficient and not near as mobile.
Harpies/Hive Crones are fun if you want to play the FMC game
Add screening gargoyles, vopes, mopes, and zopes to taste.

Ripper can do very well (Deep Striking) and I think that Genestealers may be making a come back (they do not need Synapse)(and they can Infiltrate) Good luck! And good hunting!
