Interesting that thats on an atheist website. That kind of supports what someone else was saying about who the supposed satanists really are.

Having said that its funny as.. heck.

I want one for GC. She'd love it and it would go well with her "glam punk" cute skull style motiff she's got going right now.

EDIT: Wow there's a lot of antiChristian bigotry on that site.

I'm a bit terrified that the Satanists sounded reasonable and articulate. Based on my 1980's News an Chic Tract reading knowledge of Satanists that should not be the case. They should be kidnapping pre-schoolers, committing ritual suicide, reading a version of the Bible that isn't supported by Jack Chick, and playing D&D all day.

Did Chic Tracts lead me astray!

Actually a group freely exercising their rights, to determine if the community was willing to support said rights.

It would appear that the community is not so willing, which is the point. It indicates the hypocrisy of those in power, who are responsible for the passage and enforcement of rules in the areas of their jurisdiction (in this case public schools). You cannot permit one religious organization to distribute materials and then prohibit another from doing the same. That's a violation of the United States Constitution and Federal law. No state or local law can allow less rights or permissions than a Federal Law, but they can always permit *more* rights. The Federal law sets *minimum* requirements, rights, permissions, etc.

Well, in primary school we had christian RE lessons, no other religion was ever mentioned. I ignored those classes. i personally see very little difference. after all, considering what had been done in the name of god compared to what has been done in the name of satin....
also, aren't satanists just Christians who decided they prefer burning for eternity rather than wandering around doing nothing?
it is, though, interesting how the are considering banning all religious distributions, considering that Christianity has wheedled its way into most every school. nothing against Christianity of course, 'wheedled' is just the only word i could think of.

And no, the Church of Satan is essentially about individualism. The awesomeness of the person, rather than the awesomeness of a god.

Kind of. The actual Church of Satan is not a pack of devil-worshippers, ironically enough. The CoS views "Satan" as more of a metaphoric or symbolic concept, rather than an actual being.

We have a copy of the coloring book at work. Keeps the young 'uns entertained when they need a break. Best part, though, was when I suggested to one of the Petty Officers that she casually offer it to the local Navy command's chaplain when he came by to do one of his morale visits... Her face was priceless, but I pointed out he's supposed to represent all faiths in the service and not just that share his collar tab. He's a cool guy, though, and got a laugh out of it...

No. Satanism more revolves around a concept of "controlled selfishness." An example would be doing voluntary work because it makes you feel happy doing good or because you just enjoy the act. Other misconceptions include worship of the "Devil", child sacrifice and a willingness to murder freely

On the deity question: Satanism allows you to worship anything you want. The idea is that "The only God is the one you percieve." Which is kind of true. Everyone sees God (or their version of God) in a different way, and Satanism simply says that you are free to worship as you see fit. Be that God, Satan, Allah, pagans, nothing, or be anti-theistic completely (rejection of religion as a whole, as opposed to simply a non-believer Atheist).

Murder sprees: Satanism believes in an altered version of the 10 Commandments, and phrases and such that Christians live by. Christians say "Do unto others you would have them do unto you," which means treat others as you would like them to treat you. Satanism says "Do unto others as they do unto you" which means that you treat them with equal kindness or hostily, but no more. So if they punch you, you punch them back with equal force. If they bake you a cake, treat them in kind with a cake.

All this leads to their view of murder. Satanists see an act of murderer as the murderer announcing his wish to die. So its ok to kill him because he deserves it.

Child (and animal) sacrifice: Is banned by Satanism. Satanist beliefs are that children and animals are, in a way, a "pure" entity and should not be harmed because they are incapable of rational thought or the ability to hurt others by nature.

The first two points make the religion highly appealing to outcasts and non-conformists. Rather than as Christianity says, that only God can judge or that you have to live by someone else's rules, Satanism promotes the idea that you can think for yourself and love by those rules you wish. Not without consequence of course, breaking the laa still lands you in jail, but whether or not you obey is up to you.

I'm not a Satanist, and my knowledge is still quite limited. but I am really glad that I took the time to really read into what they actually do and believe in rather than what the militant Christians of America and the rest of world want you to believe. Everyone really should educate themselves on the religions they don't know much about. I would suggest even just reading the Wikipedia page for The Satanic Bible. Lot of interesting information there.

Christians are as likely as any other religion to engage in religious persecution, and when so engaged to use torture as well as execution. In that way, they are no different than governments, rebels, racist coalitions, or for that matter people. I bear no hatred towards them- I expect no better or worse of them than anyone else.

The situation is somewhat humorous, but I think they should have stuck to their guns and just let everyone offer materials to those who wanted them. It's a school. There's nothing wrong with learning about other religions. There are a lot of school libraries that contain religious texts, so what's the big deal? As long as it's not causing a disturbance, who cares?

The school has their own Christian values. Letting Jewish values in is the least challenging to their views. Same God and all that. Islam is a bit more distant, but still the 1 True God and so on. Hindu is taking a step away by teaching multiple Gods. But Satanism directly challenges everything Christianity teaches, including the Ten Commandments and Golden Rule, law, even the whole concept of God as an external being. Also, in their ignorance they believe Satanism teaches you to be a mass murderer and child sacrifice and the like. As far as they are concerned, letting Satanism into the school will corrupt the minds of the children and the future of the country and the world and damn them to hell, and the school by allowing it to happen. Its called a moral panic.

This seems like a smaller scale of when a state (Alabama I think?) passed a law allowing state funding for religious schools with the intent of creating more Christian private schools but when Muslims and Hindus also made private schools so they then wanted to pull funding with one rep even saying something about not even knowing there were other religions. Whenever dealing with worst elements of any religion, or state lawmakers, expect some craziness.

The law does.

The law is prohibited from having religious values.

The law might have many values that match up with the personal religious values of other people, but the law itself does not have these values. Your religious value might tell you that you shouldn't steal, and stealing might be against the law, but stealing is not against the law because the Bible says so. It is often a very narrow difference, but it is there.

No, that's where you are wrong. It SHOULD be seperate but it isn't. The law is based on morals, and morals are based on religious values. Stealing is wrong because when the laws were originally made many millenia ago, those people had a religion that said "Do Not Steal." Not just Christianity though. Think about it, if there were no religion why would any crime be considered morally wrong? It wouldn't.

As for the board, their values aren't irrelevant. They just pulled the plug because something was able to challenge their religion. They acted based on their values.
