Palladium has a license for a Robotech RPG. They might not have a license for a Robotech miniatures game.

I suspect that is the complete and entire reason why the new game is entitled Robotech RPG Tactics.

also why the game cannot be marketed as a miniatures game which has pretty much doomed it.

"marketed as a miniatures game" means nothing, Rick.
People know it is a miniatures game.

However, the licensing also seems to be the reason the models are referred to as "game pieces" rather than models or miniatures.

I actually suspect that HG has some restrictions in its own license about making model kits for Macross and that has extended to Palladium's gaming license.

So why doesn't PB market it as a miniatures game you know like having it played in the miniatures area of conventions instead of the RPG section where many do not go who are into miniature games, if I want to check out miniature games i'm looking in the miniature game area not the RPG game area.

As you are aware, they went cheap at Gencon and didn't want to spend the money for space in the miniatures gaming area.

Do you even go to Gencon? Or is this just another manifestation of your need to constantly complain about this game?

Heh, speaking of the miniatures and where they go, I found this while trawling the wide interwebs;

"I have a soft approval that if we can get five G.M's to run tactics next year each day they can find us a spot in the Miniatures room for free . While I was down at the Booth, a gentleman was speaking to Kevin and I over what he was hoping for next year, when he started talking about an elimination tourney for Robotech tactics in the form of the old War hammer tourneys. So my first big question on this to you our MA's would this be something you would sign up for and if so what would you like to see as a grand prize?"

For legal reasons HG can't allow PB to make miniatures. They can however make small scale models. Hence the plastic plagiarism by ND.lol

As to the OP's question. The back of the book makes some suggestions on how you can incorporate the " models" into your RPG games. You can show what mode your valk is in or what your mecha is doing. It's suggested that for mass battles the gm should have an easier time showing what's what. Your also encouraged to come up with other ways to use them in your RPG games. There are also guidelines on how to convert your RPG character for RRT. For points based on how high a level your character is you can buy certain mecha and skills.

So PB didn't market it as a miniature game is what your saying? thought I said that earlier ?

If you are going to argue, it's best if you actual read what you argue about.

Here, let me help you out with what I wrote in response to you:

"marketed as a miniatures game" means nothing, Rick.
People know it is a miniatures game.

Feel free to point out the part of those two sentences that claims PB marketed it as a miniatures game at Gencon.
In fact, it's been made pretty clear here that due to licensing restrictions, PB has to be careful how it markets the game.
However, pick up the box or watch someone play the game and tell me that it isn't immediately apparent that it is a miniatures game.

Hey, Rick. When you joined the Kickstarter, which wasn't marketed as a miniatures game, did you think you were signing up for a RPG? No.

actually I thought it was an RPG with a bunch of miniatures.

The game is a miniatures game of miniatures battles featuring miniature robot miniatures.

But the key is, Palladium doesn't hold the rights to produce 'Robotech' or 'Robotech Games'. What it does hold the rights to, is to produce 'Robotech RPG'. So they just call this thing Robotech RPG Tactics, and call it a day.

The IP holder for Robotech is incredibly asinine about this sort of thing. We all know about what happened with them and suing FASA about using images for macross and anime robots as the original Warhammer, Marauder, etc... but did you know they even threatened the guys who make Mechwarrior Online for using the NAME 'Warhammer' for a mech in one of that game's trailers, despite the mech only sharing a name and not image/style in common with the disputed IP? Insane

It's called Robotech RPG Tactics because Palladium wants cross promotion with it's own Robotech RPG. That's why there's the RPG to Tactics conversion section in the rulebook.

"...and special thanks to Judgedoug!" - Alessio Cavatore "Now you've gone too far Doug! ... Too far... " - Rick Priestley "I've decided that I'd rather not have you as a member of TMP." - Editor, The Miniatures Page "I'd rather put my testicles through a mangle than spend any time gaming with you." - Richard, TooFatLardies "We need a Doug Craig in every store." - Warlord Games "Thank you for being here, Judge Doug!" - Adam Troke

Well, in a manner of speaking.

As I recall, even a mid level character takes up more points than a Veritech squadron.

While cross promotion will certainly help, it is actually because of licensing issues.

well Pb has once again screwed up, they will finally be at Adepticon, but sadly will only be in the exhibitors area, think this is because they are only there to sell, and will not be running games except for demos at their booth.:

"Palladium’s First AdeptiCon – March 19-22, 2015

Palladium will be attending its first AdeptiCon, March 19-22, in the Chicago area. This sounds like a very cool event for games and wargames. We don’t know exactly what to expect, so this is as much a reconnaissance mission as anything else. Palladium and Robotech® RPG Tactics™ will only have a small presence this year with just a couple of tables in the exhibitor hall, but we are making a contribution to the AdeptiCon Swag Bag. We’ll be looking to see if we can find volunteers to run demos and we will have some Robotech® RPG Tactics™ and other role-playing game titles available for sale. We’ll keep you posted if we add any special events or convention exclusives. We hope to see some of you there.
!"

You missed the part where they talk about possibly running a small tournament if they can find volunteer GMs or whatever.

He has a habit of ignoring the inconvenient,

The game is called Robotech RPG Tactics for licensing as has been pointed out. The units are all direct conversions from the RPG...for good or ill. That will also be true for all the other generations. Whether it SHOULD have been marketed as a minis games does not matter since it CANNOT be marketed that way and why the stats being derived from the RPG is so important to reinforce its roots and avoid IP and litigation issues.

I left out the part where they ask for volunteers and where to contact them, since I'm not advertising for PB.

also they had a tourney table already lined up at Adepticon before they even made this post, although not sure if its filling up yet since it was a small game to begin with and wasn't changed as of yesterday.

I'm not saying you should advertise for them.

I'm saying that it's disingenuous to state:

well Pb has once again screwed up, they will finally be at Adepticon, but sadly will only be in the exhibitors area, think this is because they are only there to sell, and will not be running games except for demos at their booth.

When that very update says otherwise in a part that was left out.

There are untold legitimate things to mock them for, but leaving out parts while saying things like that comes across as ignoring inconvenient facts to fit a narrative.

Let's not be like that. We should aim for a higher level of discourse. Intentionally or unintentionally, that's a pertinent point that was left out.

Edit: I mean, hell, I rolled my eyes when I saw that they were hoping for their first tournament to be run by volunteers. And I recognize that 'mumbling something about maybe kinda doing a tournament... maybe...' isn't exactly a firm stance, but considering who we're dealing with here, that's more than I'd anticipated. I'd expected 'little round table demos' like before, even glancing at a small tournament is a start.

Considering who we're dealing with here, a firm stance or frequently repeated unequivocal statement like, say, backers get their stuff first before retail, wouldn't be any more reassuring than basing it on astrology. Palladium will do whatever they want when they want as long as it benefits them in the short term and isn't flagrantly illegal. I wouldn't bet on anything being set in stone till the day it happens.

You can play it as an abbreviated more lethal form of the rpg for combat scenes only. Just don't get attached to any characters.

Like Sedition Wars, RRT is a miniatures game that needs a better, cleaner gaming engine suited toward mass battles, not RIFTS.

So all this F.U PB. Did anyone see that there was a Robotech tourney at ACON the day the web cart opened for viewing. that is 2 weeks before PB post to run something.

So, RPG or not, how is this game?

All I've heard is that most people are just buying it for the miniatures, not even expecting to play the rules.

The rules are loosely based on the RPG. There ok for skirmish level games but for large games ala 40k it gets a bit difficult to keep track of everything. Unless the rules get streamlined you won't be able to play large games. Don't get me wrong it's fun and you should try it. Just keep it small.

Actually the rules are quite quick and simple and everyone that has actually played with them so far that I know of has been happy with them. They have some errata that will need to fix some things but most people who complain have not read the actual rules yet. The actual rules are only like 20 pages in the 100 page book.

Holy generalizations batman.

The rules have issues. Once those issues get worked out it will actually be a decent system. We have zero idea when or if any of those issues will actually be addressed.
