I've decided to make a "Chaos" Space Marine army. I'm tossed between choosing Alpha Legion or Night Lords. The thing that I like about the two is that they are both not techically Chaos Space Marine armies. Both also have a very unique and interesting color scheme that would be fun to paint. This would mainly be a for fun army.

I'm putting it to your to get your opinions and thoughts on which army I should do.

Night Lords. They are very rare and unique. Also they just released their primarch model from Forge World.

Read more into either of the two Legions and make a decision from there based on who you find most interesting.

Failing that, the Night Lords.

Maybe look at their 30k counterparts if you have the money, or just use the rules with normal CSM models. The rules for them in 30k are very flavourful, very cool, and 30k is just awesome.

There in lies the rub. The 30k Night Lords have a little bit more in the way of Units and Wargear.

I'm beginning to just go with both. I generally always collect enough minis to make multiple armies.

They actually have the same number of units and equal numbers of Wargear unique to them.

Alpha with the Super Headhunters and Special Termies, two HQs, their Primarch and 2 Wargear Items

NL with the Terror Squads, Night Raptors, the Apothecary, Sevatar, their Primarch and 2 Wargear items.

Can't the Alpha Legion take units from any Legion they want?

If they take their Rite of War they may select one special unit from another force.

Another reason I'm leaning a bit more towards Alpha Legion is that I get more "playable" options. I can use 30k rules, IA books, Chaos Space Marines, Codex Space Marines, IG army with some Space Marine allies.

Night Lords are bit more tricky when it comes to finding an army list to play them.

Depends on what you wanted to do with them.

Last edition I was considering running the as Counts as SWs, using Logan and WG Troops to represent a smaller elite Night Lords force. Could ally that with 'traitor guard'

Alpha Legion. You can use any Codex you want at any time. Including Codex: Squats.

I was like you keen on both NL and AL, but being a fluffy player, I felt that the AL's tactics would be more fun to play and offer greater variety.

If I did Alpha Legion, I would want them all to be as monopose and identical as possible.

I voted Night Lords.

The Night Lords have some very good fluff with Lord of the Night and the Aaron Dembski-Bowden books, but Alhpa Legion has some very fun rules on the table. Imperial Armour urges Alpha Legion players to use Loyalist Tac Squads and Space Marine armor in Alpha Legion colors to represent them as infiltrators, and there are some, likely out of date, very interesting Cult heavy lists for Alpha Legion.

The Night Lords have a very rich background but the Alpha Legion has a foundation that can become anything the player wants and all of it unique. Go with Alpha Legion.

Alpha Legion. I like both, but the Alpha Legion are more fun loving, obviously.

Those are some of my thoughts. To play Alpha Legion I could use the following:
Chaos Space Marines
Codex Space Marines
Imperial Armor Renegades
30k Rules

For Night Lords I could use:
Chaos Space Marines
Crimson Slaughter
Blood Angels
Space Wolves
30k Rules

I chose night lords, I personally think that they make for more interesting modelling.

Don't forget Black Legion, for Chosen as troops, again for the whole Small units of Veterans.

If you play Alpha Legion, you could have them posing as the Night Lords, until such time as it becomes part of the plan to become a Schola Progenium For Girls field outing.

I kind of want to paint some Night Lords in AL colors now....

Use Alpha Legion, since you can just go as literally any chapter you want and use any codex you want due to the AL's tricks and awesomesauce.

Can do some really nice Fake Ultras with the Alpha Legion.

I picked up some paint today to do some Night Lords. I plan to use the Chaos Marines from Dark Vengence box as a start.

I have some colors on order for Alpha Legion.

I figure I'd paint up a couple of test models and go from there.

The Alpha Legion's hydra motive would make for some awesome painting options if you are talented in that regard.

I personally always go with Night Lords.

The new Kurze model is awesome, and with him and my love for Night Lords I almost went with them...

But personally I'm going with Alpha Legion. I have Sons of Horus models already and I love them too but I think I'm going to relegate them to Allies status and make AL my main legion. Every time I read about them in a novel or anything I immediately really want to make some AL, I love the colour scheme, it's awesome you can use any other legions stuff in the RoW (means I can use those awesome Gal Vorbak)... They just win I think.

Although I probably will do some NL allies eventually too...

Alpha Legion because, as you say, you can use them in quite a few different army lists. I'm planning to use the Tyrants Legion list to field an Alpha Legion force outside of any 30k games. Simply because it fits them so well.
