I've finally decided to have a crack at building a titan.

There are some wonderful scratchbuilds out there that have some astonishing detail and embellishments and I will definitely be "drawing inspiration" from them. What is going to make mine a little different is that I want it to be fully posable.

The idea is going to be too have a skeleton made from MDF which will give it internal strength and also let me choose any dynamic pose I want. I don't think it will stay posable once I have built it... I will glue the joints in place for strength after I have settled on a scenic base.

All the detail and armour will be card and will be added at the end.

To start off, a foot.

MDF with plastic pins allowing it to be moved around.

Cool idea, I'll be following this.

Adding hydraulics to the phalanges: these are telescoping rods that I use for all the LaserCutCard stuff... from Evergreen Scale Models. The attachments on to the phalanges are card. This is going to ultimately be a chaos walking robot and so I have added some appropriate detailing. The attachment was done with a dressmaker's pin.

These are the metatarsus (below) and the tibia/fibula (above). The joint rotation is also done using telescoping styrene rod

This is the femur. The concentric rings are for the hip connector, which is probably going to be the widget from a can of Guiness

Actually, assuming you haven't glued the joints on the foot shown in the pics, I think there's a decent chance you could leave the titan poseable once you've finished it, judging from past experience with MDF and some 3d printing stuff I do. At the least some of it could be left poseable.

Your main issue is going to be the weight at the top vs the strength of knee/foot joints-no amount of glue will save you there if the joints aren't up to holding the weight of the titan, it will crumble apart regardless.

In truth I would love it to stay posable but I think it would make it too brittle and too easy to knock over accidentally on the table. But I will do my best to keep it movable up until the last moment.

MDF? Is this another name for plasticard?

Plasticard is *so* last century dontchaknow?.

It is 3mm thick pressed wood, sometimes called masonite. Easy to cut with a laser. Plasticard melts and bubbles.

Just for the idea alone I will give you an exalt.
Definately keeping tabs on this. Keep us posted.

The foot subassembly. It all moves and I think I need to try do a video of it.

The entire leg. There are a few changes I will make in the next cut to improve stability and range of motion.

I can't move forward with this project until 15 Jan as the guys who do my laser cutting are closing for the holidays but I will spend the time making changes to this model for the other leg

The second leg is under construction. I made some changes to the design of the foot for the second leg and as a result it has a far greater range of motion. The original foot (left) can only raise itself off the floor that high. The new foot (right) can lift itself really high.

Remember… the model is not intended to move once it is finished… making it posable like this is only so that it can be posed as dramatically as possible on its base. The idea is that once it is posed, all the joints will be glued

The hip connectors.
Those concentric rings are sized for the widgets that come inside a can of Guiness. Problem: I have no widgets. Solution?

Both legs are now done.

The next step is to test the hip connectors and then start on the armour.

More updates

This is the torso – internal supports with the crossbeam to hold the arms. The weird holes in some of the pieces are not really part of the design.. I needed some other parts cut and didn’t want to waste MDF

The torso mounted to the hips using a beer widget as a ball.

First test of leg armour – toes and shin.

Closeup of the detailing… suitably chaosy.

The legs are basically done. I now need to start raiding the bitz box to bulk them up.

This is the main hull – these cardboard pieces surround the MDF from part 3

The main reactor vents have been added at the back

You can see how the card has been added to the MDF bits and where it will join to the hips

A rough test of the hull on top of the hips

So the whole point of this project is to be able to pose the titan in some really dynamic fashion before gluing it down for stability.

Here are some poses I was messing around with

The main hull and head are done.

I didn't like the wolfs head so I have made my own.

This is amazing, I love what you're doing, really pushing the laser cutter past the plain square usage we're seeing everywhere else.

Finally, everything is stuck together and glued in place

Click on the images for slightly bigger ones

All that is left to do now is to add details, specifically lots of hydraulic pistons.

Here are the two finished models - the Canis Morbi and Canis Vomica

There is still a little bit of detailing to be added - I had to rush these to get them into an apocalypse game I was playing in (if you are interested, here is the link: http://lasercutcard.co.za/2016/01/14th_apocalypse_part_1/)

There were actually some incredible models in this game... here is a link to a few more of them: http://lasercutcard.co.za/2016/01/14th_apocalypse_part_2/
