Hello Dakkadites,
Simple question here: Is the Grenadier upgrade for veteran squads worth it? It changes 5+ to 4+ (which is a big difference against bolters), but my vets are going to be inside a Chimera and if they're outside, ruins already provide 4+ cover. The upgrade is cheap but if it's not necessary I'd rather take a couple Grenade Launchers (fluff reasons, I don't care if they're considered bad).

If you believe cover is everywhere and you'll always get a save, then no, it's not that useful. If you ever don't want to have your vets cowering in cover, or your opponent ever brings cover-ignoring weapons that are Ap5, then it's useful.

I sometimes ran grenadiers vets even in chimeras. That +1Sv came in really handy when their transport exploded. It was sometimes the difference between a bunch of guys with lasguns getting killed and all of those guys and then the sergeant or some special weapons also getting killed.

And that was back when it cost 30 points. Now...

Definitely worth it if you are taking plasma guns. Generally worth it if you expect you guys to leave there chimeras (which you probably should)

Yep, definitely worth it. Doubling your survivability against most small arms in the game for just 10 points is huge!

I use it if I'm running plasma - since friendly fire is a real issue.

However, I've taken to not giving it to my other squads, unless I plan to put a HQ choice in them.

15pts.

Ah, got confused with the Camp Cloaks! Still better than the 30 points I used to pay for that.

Oh, indeed.

Out of interest though, what do you think of the other two doctrines?

Honestly, they're all decent. Camp Cloaks behind an ADL make great line holders, and god help any MC or tank that comes near a unit with demolitions and Meltaguns. If I only take one, though, it's carapace armour every time.
