Any formation used is going to have to come from a published source, that means it should be purchaseable. Just search the name on black library on any questionable formations and you should be able to catch it.

I play with reasonable folks on the regular, so I guess I'm lucky that I'll never see anything like this...
So much this, im increasingly glad to be living in some apparent gaming out of touch bubble if this is really a problem from GW giving the players optional extras.
Lol, yeah.
I think the problem the OP was mentioning was something like this:
http://www.blacklibrary.com/games-workshop-digital-editions/Dataslate-Belakor.html
So, if someone in that magical pickup game that Gunzhard described showed up with a Be'lakor dataslate (printed out, since it's ebook only) and they had doctored it with, whatever, S10, most people (including me) would have no idea if that was true or not, since they aren't going to go buy the $4 dataslate off of black library to check.
I think realistically the chances are soooooo tiny, because if they were ever caught, they'd be forever branded as TFG who cheats by photoshopping dataslates.
For me, if someone went and bought the Forge World Be'lakor model, I'd be happy to play against it, and accept their version of the dataslate as true, without any form of verification. If I ever found out it wasn't, I'd just go... uh.... SERIOUSLY?? Obviously, I feel that my friends have better things to do than that

Play at a Gee Dubs. they will sort that kinda sillyness out.
But seriously if some one is using a Photocopied page of a book. ask them to bring in the book. how hard is that?
If it is Ebook only then ask them to bring it on your phone. literally easy as feth.

Yeah. Because GW staff know all the rules.

Well iv not seen anyone without a smart phone in a while now.

If you want to get silly, obviously, you can fake the eBook as easily as the photocopied book. A minor change like +1I to +1S could make all the difference in the world. But, I say again... SERIOUSLY?
I have never heard of someone this desperate to win

Man if some one is going through that much trouble already then other signs of cheating would probably start popping up.

No one actually expects it to happen or if the person does to not be called out and the ploy plastered about everywhere including here. There hasnt been a thread dedicated soley to bashing GW for a whole day or so a new one was started. At least this one is camouflaged a little bit.
it boils down to 3 things
1. TOs check entries
2. If your worried about your buddies using it, your playing the wrong people
3. If your losing sleep over this, maybe you should try playing a different game or more likely give up all forms of gaming. Or shopping 'is this REALLY how much a gallon of milk costs or did someone come and put fake prices on it?" or driving "Am I REALLY supposed to stop here or is someone playing a prank?"......

Thing is, if you're going to go to the trouble of forging a formation, surely you should go a little further and see if you can sell copies of said formation to gullible players?
Just make sure not to price it too cheaply, or they might get suspicious.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.
Please report to your nearest GW store for attitude readjustment. Take your wallet.
Mind if I sig this?

It being a rumor and being confirmed are two HUGE differences.
To be honest, GW makes a pretty big spectacle out of their releases. You'd be hard pressed to not hear about the new supplement/data slate/ etc. To forge one would be a huge gamble, because if you go to a well established group with a fake one, SOMEONE will question it and look it up, or know for a fact it isn't real. And you'd have to have damn good forging equipment. You'd need to be able to print it out exactly like GW does, and print it on the right paper. And even trying to use a 'photocopy' of it would draw speculation.
Honestly, any jackass trying to make fake rules to pass em off as real is an idiot. Plus, we can usually tell when something is GW made or not just by the power level of the material.

I am glad I am not the only one that doesn't worry to much about this, pretty much all the players I know would not even think of creating a fake data slate or changing stats to cheat.
The only person I can think that may do it is mister roll small dice behind things, so people cannot see your rolls, or roll them behind your hand. Most people pick up on what he is doing very quickly
Because of this I came up with some personal rules for me to play by
1. Use dice that are easily visible to my opponent and do not obscure results
2. Roll Dice in the open, never behind things
3. Pick up failures not successes.
4. Say what I am rolling when I roll something and the target number
5. If my opponent leaves the table models are not moved and dice are not rolled until they return.

Only if you're paying attention to them.
I have absolutely no clue just how many dataslates there are out there now, let alone what they all are. There were too many coming out to keep up with, I had no intention of buying them, and so I just stopped paying attention to them.
If someone showed up for a game with one, I'd have no problem with it... and no (practical) way of knowing if it's genuine, or something they've cooked up themselves.

It astounds me how many people just in this thread look to TO's as these super human infalable people who stake their lives of the validity of every detail in their huge tournaments.
I seem to recall very recently a huge error that slipped through what many here believe to be the iron wall of checking at a major tournament. A mistake that benefited the player by getting him to the finals. They realized the mistake, and he graciously stepped down from his position, was not forced, to correct it. So this whole attitude of "lol that would never fly at a major tournament" is very ignorant. In fact, with all that is going on, and the fact that player might only play 5 or 6 people that might actually catch it, I would say the chances are GREATER than at a FLGS.
And even if his army list was posted later and scrutinized by the internet, if its something as simple as a single Initiative value being fudged, it wouldn't show. They would know his list, but wouldn't see his copy of the rules. And that single extra edge could be all you need. Automatically Appended Next Post: In fact: I would appreciate it if any TO's would chime in. I bet they would be the first ones to tell you they are fallible as anyone else, and as small a chance as it is, this type of blatant cheat could pass by.

Im pretty sure no one has used the word infalable.
But it is a TO's job to check all the things and generally will have all sources for cross checking.
Its especially important in bigger events since there entire reputation is on the line.
