The OP needs to remind the friend that the internet is not, in fact, for falsehoods but is, instead, purposefully and primarily for the disbursement of materials of prurient nature.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Ask him what he says about things like discrepancies in the codexes. The stormfang cannon is listed as AP3 in the ranged weapons section when using the blast template, but in the reference page at the back it says AP2. If you don't use an FAQ, how do you play it?

Btw, isn't it nice that we pay $50-60 for a new codex and it has numerous errors requiring an FAQ the day it's released?

if your friend refuses to accept anything on the internet I doubt you'll be able to do much. the best you can do is ask the GW manager point blank in his presence "so this stuff is directly from games workshop and is completly legal to use yes?"

sure, I'll be the first to admit "I read it on the internet" is something you should be skeptical of. but when it's offically released information on a companies website for their own game? it's golden.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Incredibly immature. Life is too short for this kind of silliness. Just leave him and move on. Your life will be so much better without this kind of bs drama.

He'a the only person who lives near me, is around my age, and plays 40k. Nobody will play with me because price gouging.
There are a few people at the nearby game stores who play, but it's sometimes a ghost town and sometimes so full you can't get a game.

Well, if you go to a store, you have a chance at a game, and a chance at meeting new people for regular games.

If you don't go out, you have a 0% chance of changing anything.

Absolutely true. Networking can do wonders. Talk to some of the guys and shop owner/employees, you can get eads and tips from them as well as games. Join any of their clubs if they have any, get to know them. Friend them on facebook and network off of there. Check out groups on there that these guys are in. Stores usually have one as well.
Chances are, there are more players near you than you think and age differences isnt that big a deal. Your playing a game, not going out on a date lol.

There have been times I've had to drive over an hour to get a game. If you talk to players ahead of time, you can set up games beforehand.

maybe get this guy to join you on these forays and firsthand meetings with gamers might help him learn.

Couldn't agree more with this. You are limiting your chances by putting up with this. Ditch him - find new friends and move on. Stop making yourself into the victim here and take some proactive steps to fix the problem. (Hint: You cannot fix THIS guys problem, but you can fix your own.)

He's been my best friend for ~7 years. I can't exactly ditch him.

Sounds like the guy has some zealotry problems. It's like trying to argue a religious person. Logics simply doesn't work. You should probably apply the method used to convince schizophrenics take their pills.
You agree with everything he says. Act friendly and understending. He stops seeing you as a threat to confront and only after that you try to bring your ideas up to him. But they must only sound as suggestions that he's not obliged to follow. Furthermore, it must not contradict his logics scheme. Like you're not telling him that FAQ and Dataslates are legal. You tell him that they're so much fun and add variety and are GW approved or something.
Earlier or later he starts taking pills using dataslates and reading FAQ-s.

Sure, it's easier to play another person but as there's no other person...

Off topic but I dislike being called irrational because I'm religious. Find another example next time and quit generalizing large groups of people. Thanks.

Here's a potential solution:

Show him this thread. If the "Internet is all Lies," and it says on the internet that the internet is all lies, then surely the statement that the "internet is all lies" is itself a lie.

Cue head exploding scene from Scanners.

Skimmed through very fast so not sure if said. Surprised this wasn't mentioned. If it was, oops.

The answer is quite simple. Your friend only believes the GW manager. So go with him to the GW store and speak to the manager and this way the manager can tell your friend everything is legal and you are correct.

Simple really. Let him hear it from the horses mouth.

Why not? Every thing you've told us seems to indicate that he isn't that good of a friend, and you clearly don't enjoy playing with him. So why exactly are you shackled to him?

Sometimes games are fun, we play video games together and he's not TFG playing them, we play paintball together, ect...

Then you need to tell him to pull his head out of his fourth point of contact and realize that content is produced and released on the internet for use with this game. This is the 21st century, it's time he got with it.

Show him that Citadel, BL, FW are all just subsets of the same company, GW.

Also, I think there may have been a new post or something on the GW website that talks about FAQs moving to the BL, not sure though.

I'm not sure about that (I haven't seen it), but they are on both BL and the GW web page...
The ones on GW are marked as printed earlier than the BL ones, but I haven't seen a difference in the files myself... (may have missed something)

Lol this thread is unbelievably stupid. Both the op and his friend need to get over themselves.

Said friend needs a reality check and the op should just man up and straight out tell his friend I will be using faqs, dataslates etc to f I want to. If your friend wants to play he has no choice otherwise get a grip and get someone else to play.

There are plenty groups you can post on looking for games so man up

Sounds like you're too good of a friend to him. And you're enabling his issues. It's the tough answer, but you need a new friend. He's trying to control how you guys have fun, ignoring the legit rules and accepting only what he believes, and gets upset if you disagree. He may not be mentally unhinged, but is just one of those guys who always has to be right all the time and can't accept anyone knowing better than him. Be forceful, tell him he's wrong, get the manager to prove it (since he's imbibed enough kool-aid to believe anything from said gw source), and call it a day. If he refuses you still, tell him you're sick of him dictating how you must play, especially when he's wrong. Since it sounds like you're a kid or teen, new friends might be a bit hard to pull off, but you'll meet some in college. Then ditch his ass and never look back.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

OP, seems like you have a few choices here.

Continue to play with your friend and keep the peace.

Take your friend to one side and explain to him how obstructive he is being, be rational, but firm.

Seek alternative hobbyists who aren't so..unreasonable.

A combination of the above.

I have been in a similar situation and found that being direct worked well - at the same time I found a few new players/groups so I was not reliant on one guy,

5 years from now you will look back and wonder why you wasted all this time dealing with this kind of crap. Ditch him and move on. Your 7 year history with this guy does not mandate that you need to continue....

Sorry man but you are not taking control of the situation and are instead allowing yourself to become the victim here.

All of the advice given so far seems to be ignored - so you must want this to continue. It just always amazes me when people ask for advice. Solid advice is given. And that person has a reason that every reasonable and logical solution cannot be done.

I know it sounds harsh and I don't mean to sound so harsh. But stop playing 40k with this guy and get some better game mates.
