hello,

had a game yesterday against eldar. me and my friend came across the possibility of using swooping hawks against tanks.

the hawks have haywire grenades, so one model in the unit can throw a grenade in the shooting phase (hitting on 2+, glancing on 2+) then assault the vehicle and use the grenades in CC (one attack for each model, usually 6).
hitting on 3+ (2+ for the exarch respectivly) and glancing on 2+.

we skimped over the rules and found nothing to prevent this. we BOTH agreed that this is somehow ridiculous. the unit costs like 100 points and can pretty much destroy any tank in the game in 1 phase with an outstanding accuracy and a thread range up to 24".

did we miss something? or is this a real thing?

As long as you remember that grenades have a 8" Range when you fire them, the above is indeed correct!

Yes, this is a real thing. Play on a table with excellent Impassible & LoS terrain and Swooping Hawks become the terror of armor everywhere.

While they can be powerful in the right situation, they are also rather fragile, often wiped out by a single model with a template weapon or a barrage shot.

Why does the exarch hit on a 2+ in CC? Why are swooping hawks (bs4) hitting on 3's during shooting?

The OP mentioned hitting on 2s, not 3s.
And the exarch will not hit on a 2+ in CC.

Wyches in a Venom can do the same thing, but really only a threat range of 20" and they'd have to make an 8" charge.

Unless they have cover saves then its a real pain in the ass. 360pts and 12 haywire blasters for 1 wave serpent with holofields.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!
