The fluff in the new rulebook clarifies that his black crusades up to this point were totally part of a larger cohesive plan and not just 12 individual failed attempts to March on Terra.

Thoughts on this?

Wait, which new rulebook?
Not the BA one surely?

That was already clarified in the CSM codex and the black legion supplement I believe...

It may have been in the BL supplement, but I'm talking about the Rulebook that's about 80% fluff,10% rules, and 10 percent pictures.

I called him failbaddon in a thread about the leaders of CSM forces, and I was bombarded by a bunch of fanboys about how he was the greatest thing to ever happen to chaos

Then maybe you should stop subscribing to the 4chan view of his crusades?

Of the crusades he has led, he's completed all the objectives he's set out for, expanded the eye of terror that bit more and generally caused setbacks for the Imperium in and around cadia.

The only real retcon is the introduction of the crimson path as part of his grand plan, that and GW being unhappy with the actual outcome of the 13th black crusade.

Ofc, remember that any and all fluff might be propaganda or all-out lies too. Failbaddon will surely claim that he has a master plan, and if you serve under him you'd better nod and say "yes boss". If ayone manages to get into his files to check out this plan I bet it says 1) Capture Terra 2) Party.

Highly recommend Talon Of Horus if you want some more insight into Abaddon (and a good read to boot.)

I have to say, he doesn't come across as a guy who doesn't know what he's doing.

Maybe that's why it's taking 13 crusades. He keeps losing his arms, and was too embarrassed to deal the finishing blow. Because he's 'armless, you know.

This isn't anything new, this has, if not always been the case, been so for quite some time. Even going back to 2E, GW doesn't claim that all of Abaddon's Black Crusades were intended to reclaim Terra and some were very small indeed.

As noted, most of the "Failbaddon" stuff came from a nearly decade old 4chan meme making jokes about a picture where a WIP model lacked arms.

Actually, Abaddon has already conquered Cadia. That he somehow failed is just Imperial propaganda.

This dance can be danced both ways.

Maybe Abaddon's existence is pure Imperial propaganda made to ensure that worlds are compelled to give up the yearly tithes. Maybe the existence of the Imperium itself is propaganda told to the last remnants of humanity to keep their hopes up. Maybe the existence of the 40k universe is just a complete fabrication made up by mediocre British authors for the express purpose of selling overpriced wargaming minatures.

The Emperor is really an Ethereal. Did you really think a dead man can rule an empire? It's all a Tau conspiracy.

Yeah the jokey myth that He failed 12 times is just that, a myth, the fluff as far back as 2nd doesn't support this and either people don't know or find it "kewl" to keep the joke going, its just general ignorance of older fluff or not bothering to actualy try to read anything at all and ignoring the millions of times that your told "nope, did exactly what he intended"

This "older fluff" from 2nd Edition just said that Abaddon's goal was to create his own diabolical empire from the shattered remnants of the Imperium.

So yes, it's not suggesting his Crusades failed, but it's also a pretty broad goal with no timetable for success, too. The suggestion that each Crusade has been part of a long con is a much more recent invention.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Failure or not, Abbadon is still not anywhere near as awesome as Archaon. Probably because Archaon has an awesome looking helmet where Abbadon has an extremely silly hair tower.

Abaddon took the Burj Khalifa, shrunk it down to miniature size, and now wears it as a hat. It just looks like an over-sized topknot because he wraps the outer strands of his fading hairline around the tower.

Ofc, seeing how much your average GW writer knows about strategy and tactics it's no wonder Abaddon's master plan is left a bit vague. Marneus Calgar, the greatest Imperial strategist ever (according to himself at least) shows his mastery of grand strategy by fighting the Eldar Avatar in hand-to-hand. I guess when all you have is a pair of power fists every problem starts looking like something that should be punched.

Archaon has had much better writing that seems a lot more thought out, though that may also be helped in that they wrote his fluff relatively chronologically as opposed to having to write his backstory later.

Anyone who ever tried to attach the arms of the old metal model can tell you. They reputedly fell off more often than SoB metal back packs.
